Acura pushes TL Type-S to 286 horsepower

i love the quad exhaust, smoked rear sidemarkers, tailights and kinda like the type-s's rear bumper. other than that, my a-spec looks cleaner. IMO, my headlamps, smoked and cleared look cleaner than those with DRL's and fogs in the grille. those rims look terrible.
the interior is way nicer on the type-s, sucks for current owners. but as far as the exterior, every change can probably be retrofitted on an 04-06 with minimal effort.
i will still stick to my guns saying it is overpriced for its market, and the G35 will be a better buy.

I still think the better buy is a 2006 TL with Nav for $31.5. That leaves a LOT of cash for hookups to make your lowly TL trump the TL-S or G35 (i power or technology). Your buying a lot of "moniker and badging" for the estimated price.
I agree, fogs look terrible. Those that plan to retrofit must plan to relocate the fogs. Not sure how though, as the lower grill pattern looks different now.
Ding, see my other post on "those with parchment interior". I already planned to 2 tone my Parchment. I bought the black interior peice/door covers from an Ebony 2006. My end result will look VERY similar to the new TL-S design (except the steering wheel, gauge cluster, and headrests obviously).
I really wonder about the retrofitting the new Nav more than anything.

I must commend Honda/Acura for damn near reading my mind...
My TL wish list included:
1. Real Foglights
2. a Real Exhaust Note
3. More Torque/Power
4. 6-spd Automatic
It seems that they will have everything but the 6spd.
On the other hand, I don't like the new base wheels. Not really fond
of the headlights, and the Type-s wheel doesn't do anything for me.
Not really fond of 3-spoke steering wheels either, but to Acura's credit, this
one is nice to look at.
All in all the most intriguing aspects of the new TL-S (for me) are:
What's that exhaust gonna sound like (I'm expecting a big departure from Honda norms in this area)
And I can't wait to test the new engine.
Honda/Acura had done a good job of upgrading the TL without alienating current 04-2006 owners. Good job. I'm sure the styling will grow on me.

I think acura should lower the price of tl-s to around 37k or somewhere close/lower than the new G35 and ES350. come to think of it..... the only competition tl-s really have is against the new G35..... around the same price... engine... one is rear/awd and one is front wheel drive.... the lexus es is not even close.... it's for old dads and moms.... would any of you seriouly buy a lexus es ??? the look of tl attract alot of young age buyers... if acura put the price near 40k...... either the young buyers or their parents will probably walk away from the tl-s

Perhaps in 2008 or 2009 when Acura decide to REALLY make this a fastER sedan, like 350hp engine......... I'm happy with my current supercharged TL.

286HP FWD TL S vs 306HP RWD/AWD G35 at same price = TL S loses.
What distinguishs Acura from Infiniti, Lexus and BMW is bang for the buck, but they lost that w/TL S. I think they still have it w/base TL, I just have to decide whether 07 is worth the extra money or do I get 06 at discount......

Just a quick note for those concerned about having "only" 286hp...
With "only" 258hp the 04-2006 TL ran confidently against the 280hp G35 in
terms of outright acceleration. So I fully expect that the new 3.5 will be a solid contender
against the G35's new 3.5 in this area as well. Hp figures don't tell the whole story, as evidenced by the (relatively, for 200hp) slow 0-60times of the TSX auto.
I wonder what the EPA mpg figures will look like... I've always been AMAZED by the
efficiency of the TL. Can't wait to see how this new engine fairs.

Depends... Average TL times are still slower than average G35 times, especialy the automatic. And most of the comparisons were against the 260hp G35 sedan. (I'm talking average, not best times). And the RL didn't benafit much from the "300hp" 3.5. I happen to own both a TL and G35, and my wife likes to play around when we meet up, so we've taken both up to speed before, but that's another thread. And if your into that sort of thing, I think there are many more mods available for the VQ than the 3.2/3.5.
For the record, the 298hp VQ is SAE certified as 293hp or something like that. The VQ in the M35 was already SAE certitied with the new standard when introduced, so it's 280hp rating wasn't over-rated.
I'm pretty sure Infiniti had their eyes set on the IS350 and BMW 3 series when redesigning the engine, as noted by the similar hp/torque figures. The IS350 blows the doors off the TL with a 5.1 second 0-60 with an automatic transmission. I fully expect the G35 to be able to hang with it, considering even with the old G35, people were able to do a 5.5 0-60 run.
As for the TSX being slow for 200hp. Remember the TSX also has no torque. The VQ has more torque than the TL. But this isn't a TL vs G35 thread, so who cares. The point is that the TL-S is overpriced.
Besides performance aside, whether or not the TL-S is faster or not is probably besides the point. People have to admit that numbers sell. And what's joe-six pack going to think when he sees a Chevy Impala with 300+ hp, a G35 with 300+hp, an IS350 with 300+hp, an a TL with 286hp?

Im speaking on the fact that everybody is putting the type-s up against the new G35 that is going to come out with 300+ hp and the newly designed IS350 that came out 6 months ago with 306 HP...
When the new TL comes out, just like the new G is coming out and the new IS came out, than we can compare....a company isnt going to stray way from its new design cycle just because a company came out with a car that has more HP than it does....
Remember if the TL was able to register sub 6 second 0-60 times with its SAE 258 HP and ??? torque...how well will it do with with the new 286 hp and increased torque....
In the 2005 model comparison between the above mentioned cars, the TL was second to the is350 in 0-60 and quickest in the lane change...and that was
against the mentioned 298HP G35.....

So, is this 286 HP according to the new SAE rating measures or the old. Because the regular TL used to be 270 and is now 258...
And also, 286 hp on a front-wheel-drive?? HELLO TORQUE STEER!!

Awful lot of talk here about swapping parts from our exisiting 3Gs. Rather than dump alot of $ on upgrading or buying an 07 Type S, I think I'm waiting for a fourth generation. I think 300hp and 4WD is pretty much a given.

As for the skidpad numbers, they are a little suspiscious. In C&D's own previous comparo, the G35 wearing more "conservative" tires handled better than the TL did. I've regularly many tests of the G35 getting 0.93g on the skidpad, and the A-Spec TL 0.91.
Seriously... Why would a 60/40 balanced car ever handle better than a 52/48 balanced one?
On a side note, the turning radius our our TL sucks arse compared to the turning radius of our G35...
But this is off-topic....

Easy, it's called engineering. A car's handling is dependent on 100's of factors from tires, suspension, mass distribution, drive configuration, chassis stiffness,... not just one factor like weight distribution.
A former colleague has a Mini and she consistently laps quicker in autocourse tracks compared to her previous Miata. Her Mini is ~60/40 FWD, and the Miata was close to 50/50 RWD.
But seriously did someone from Acura run over your dog, steal your newspaper, call you a bad name...?
The amount of trash talk some ex-TL owners produce in this 2007 thread is amazing.
