Unhappy ac compressor locked and whinning

My Ac compressor went out , first I did not have cool air for a few weeks , now after a horrible metal noise , At first I couldn't star my car , after I turned off the AC it starts now but I smell burning rubber and smoke is coming out form the engine ,as I figure the serpentine belt is burning at the stuck pulley , can I just replace the clutch and live without AC or do I have to replace the compressor? mechanics want big $ about 6 to 8 hundred just for labor , I do not have the resources right now , any hacks or ideas to get me through this? Thank you so much in advance!

This isn't software where you can 'hack' things, it's a technical issue.

Replacing the clutch and coil hand been discussed on here before, but it's not an easy DIY. However, it'll be your cheapest solution.

Compressor replacement is a good amount of work, especially in areas with rust so I can see why mechanics charge what they do, along with the drain and refill of the freon in the lines.

Maybe bypass the pulley.

One problem is finding a belt of the right size. The others in the linked post did that hard work and found one that will work.

One other problem is that bypassing a pulley sometimes causes the belt to skip due the changed routing (the new routing may decrease contact area on one of the remaining pulleys). The only pulley that has less contact with the new routing is the idler pulley, so that concern does not apply here. See post below
