6mt trouble finding 6th gear!??!

I know this seems crazy, but was curious if anyone has had issues shifting into 6th on the 6mt? I wouldn't really say that this is a problem, but each time I go to shift into 6th I am afraid I will inadvertantly shift into reverse and always end up downshifting into 4th!?

Can anyone give me any pointers? I only have 300 miles on the car and have not had many chances to shift into 6th, but as mentioned, each time I do I always end up downshifting into 4th!?

For those that are almost assuredly going to ask, I have been driving manuals for over 17 years (this is the first 6 speed though).

Thanx

You can't inadvertently shift into reverse - there is an electronic lockout feature that prevents you from doing this. Just push all the way over to the right while pulling the shifter down from 5th and you'll be fine.

agree with Chris3G, as I shift from 5 to 6, my palm is actually facing the passenger seat, pushing the stick towards the passenger seat as I shift downwards into 6th.

Fith and sixth are not synchronized, that why you have to actually move the lever more deliberately to shift to those gears. The palm towards the passenger seat maneuver works for me too.

Not synchronized?

You simply don't know what you are writing.

Believe me, if 5th and 6th gears were not synchronized, you would most definitely know it.

you don't have to push to the right so hard to get it into 6th. when i first got the car i would push as far right as possible before i push it down to 6th. i found it much smoother to just push to the right slightly and then down.

Read the manual, fith and sixth have no synchros, its not a lack of anything. Those gears simply do not require it. Some people around here just shoot of their mouth without even reading the manual! :shit:

5 - 6

Yep, I use the palm towards the passenger side method too. Doesn't require a lot of force to stay in the gate - just a light push away against the spring. The reverse lockout will keep you out of trouble.

Gear synchronization is a safety feature to avoid "grinding" up-shifts and over-reving down-shift, not to make the tranny smoother. That is totally a by-product of the system. Try to engage 2nd while doing 70 mph. If at all possible (which I've tried unsuccessfully) please DO NOT lift the Clutch!!! Even 1st gear @ 35mph is very hard to engage. Another thing, 5th gear would need a synchro when down-shifting from 6th gear @ 160 mph. We wish!!!

Good avice on shifting from 5th to 6th. Keeping your palm facing the passenger seat and slight pressure in that direction also helps in down shifting from 6th to 5th. This reduces the liklihood of hitting third inadvertently and over-revving the engine.

5th and 6th gears are synchronized. In the picture below, item #7 is the synchronizer ring/sleeve set for 5th (item #5) and 6th (item #6) gears.

If you examine the diagram carefully you will find 2 synchros not three! These are the synchros for the fist 4 gears if you can find the third one please be my guest and point it out! :sqntfawk:

Hey guys, according to the owner's manual on page 178 and it says "The manual transmission is synchronized in all forward gears for smoother operation."

On another note....I am happy to report finding 6th gear this morning on the way to work

Synchronized or not I LOVE this car

Thanks for all the pointers, the open palm towards passenger seat worked like a charm!

Giving you a break, your orginal post might be just a "mistake", but what about this one? Did it come to you in a dream, or did you think you could bluff your way out of the hole you had dug, or ...? Kind of hurts your credibility, don't you think?

Since you want to be an asshole, know that the transmission has a mainshaft and a countershaft -- this picture shows only the mainshaft, and thusly does not contain every gearset. Excellent job on bullshitting, though. I especially liked the part where you berated people for not reading the manual and, lo and behold, that very same tome contradicts the horseshit you are spewing.

I almost forgot... let me be your guest. The countershaft (with 1-2 synchro set.. item #4):

I had a little trouble the first 600-700 miles - once the tranny is broken in thogh is is OH so butter smooth.

You'll get used to it. My wife always geeks out when she drives my car and has to put it into 6th. My first manual car was a 6 speed Z28, and I haven't had any issues, so I'm betting it's just your subconscious screwing with you. You are probably afraid of hitting reverse, and are overcompensating and getting into 4th.

Mine was a little difficult to shift in the first 300 miles too, but now that I"m at 860 its getting easier every day.

Question. I do not yet own one of these babies. Is reverse also synchronized? A lot of transmissions have this feature nowadays. If not, to avoid grinding when shifting into reverse, first go into a forward gear such as 3rd. The 3rd gear synchros will stop the gears and reverse can then be engaged without the fear of grinding gears.
