5AT TL vs. 2.5 Altima "you drive a TL, DRIVE IT!" haha

Alright so i was driving down this road thats a good 5 miles with no stop lights or side streets because its just surrounded by trees at around 40mph.
I see this guy in a red 2.5 Nissan Altima speeding up on the lane next to me and he suddenly slows down when he gets next to me. I look over and see him looking at me saying something. And i give him the what are you saying face? And so i roll down my window he rolls his window down and he yells, "YOU DRIVE A TL! DRIVE IT!! I PUSH THIS 2.5 HARD ALL THE TIME!" I then just shrug my shoulders and he starts to drive off accelerating hard. Hes about a car length ahead of me and i downshift to 2nd gear at around 45 mph and i could not catch up to him at all??!! I let off at around 85ish mph and he was about 1.5 car lengths ahead of me. He also had 1 passenger while i was by myself with about 1/4 tank of gas lol. He definitely was a 2.5 also because he had the 2.5 base rims.

Cliffnotes : 2.5 nissan altima rolls up to me at 40mphish says "you drive a TL DRIVE IT!!" he starts to go, i start to go. and i could not catch up to him.

He should be modded up the ass or something because you should be able to take a stock 2.5 Altima easily.

I couldnt even take on a h22 prelude with a SRI/header or a rsx type-s with a CAI.
I was dead even with both of them. This makes me really wish i had a 6spd :/

2.5 shouldn't be a problem. though the 3.5 u need to worry about raced an auto b 4 from 60-120 it cept up pretty close till the speeds got higher, drove my sisters 3.5 6sp manual and it seems to pull pretty hard but never raced her

hmm, if you could keep on with a modded rsx-s and H22 prelude, I think your car is running just fine then. Seems like that Altima is not "normal".

That's assuming it's a 3G Altima.....the 4G has a dual outlet for both the QR and VQ motors. That said, any stock TL built since 1999 should have NO problem with a non-boosted 2.5L Altima.

Sidenote: My son briefly entertained the idea of 'retrimming' his base 3.5SE to appear as a 2.5S (i.e.: badging, 16" wheels, exhaust conversion to a single outlet) just to play some mind games on those he runs against; not to mention, the weight savings would make it a bit quicker. The OP's story makes me wonder if that "2.5" Altima might be setup likewise.

It was a 2002-2006 model year altima (not sure which generation altima that is).
Had a single exhaust exit, 2.5 badges, 2.5 wheels.
Sounded bone stock.
My guess is that he either did a VQ engine swap or rebadged and made his car look like a 2.5 haha.

I also remember a couple months back this guy with a 3.5 altima coupe auto at my school always plays with me when im just cruising home. We finally were lined up at a stoplight near a forest preserve and we went at it and i let off at the top of 2nd gear(5AT). He was about a car length and a half ahead of me.

Oh what i meant by that was that i did WOT 1st-2nd and let off the gas after it shifted into 3rd.

I also use SS since auto mode shifts into the next gear too early. It shifts it about 400-500 rpms before the rev limiter.
I do this because when i shift into the next gear it will be closer to vtec for more power and your more in the powerband.

sounds like he just got a good jump on you. If you both accelerated at the same time in the right gear at the right rpm you should pull hard on a stock 2.5L Altima.

Either you have a problem with your car, if u can beat a rsx-s, or prelude. And for god sake stop using SS, and bouncing of the dam limiter, u lose so much power when u do that. Leave it in auto.....

I dont bounce off the rev limiter i make sure it shifts right before the rev limiter so when it goes into the next gear its already in the sweet spot in the power band. When its in auto it shifts about 400-600ish rpms sooner than redline and when its in the next gear its not near the sweet spot of the power band.

A win is a win and a lost is a lost. Don't try to justify the TL should have won or giving excuses, almost no body knows what the other car have under the hood every road encounter. Then there are times when the other drivers just playing with you and make you think your car is faster. With me, I always let the other guy run first and I try to catch up and if I'm able to reel him in that's a win for me. I do that just in case Mr. police man waiting on the other end, at least 50/50 chance I won’t get caught.

Yep my TL is auto and i know how to drive lmao im not stupid.
I used to drive a rsx type-s which is a 6spd manual, and i sometimes drive my dads STi.
I know how to heel toe when downshifting, i know the optimal shift points on all three cars so trust me i know how to drive lol.

And i know a win is a win and a lose is a lose, i just wanted to share my story with my fellow aziners.
