5AT doesn't shift at redline?

Hi guys

I just put the pedal to the metal for the first time last night, and to my dismay discovered that the tyranny does not pull all the way to the indicated redline (6800 rpm), but shifts early at around 6500rpm. Are other owners of 05TL with 5AT experiencing the same issue? It does this whether it's in full auto or in manumatic mode. Kinda disappointing if you ask me....but other than that, I love the car....

Yeah. Sucks, doesn't it? I was looking at the possibility of an auto, but after seeing how it shifted, there was no way I wasn't buying the 6 speed.

In SS it should only shift for you in the first 2 gears. After that it will hold until you shift.

Yup, that happens to me too. But I still love the 5AT. No more having to downshift to get up and go. Flip the stick to the left, drop one gear down and you're gone!

the torque curve flattens and drops after 6500 rpm anyway, so there's no reason to hold the first gear into the redline.

so technically, i can bounce off the rev limiter at end of 2nd gear? I really don't like the fact that the tyranny shifts early....i don't think my friend's 2001 TL-S does this....altho i could be wrong....

BINGO! Yeah the ECU is the new and improved one designed to save the engine and tranny more so than the 2G. I had one and saw the difference after the 1st tranny was replaced...

I know that the first gens never shift if you hold the gear, not even after fuel cutoff. You just bounce off the rev limiter. But we only have 4AT

Is tyranny a pun, or is he really mistaken? Cuz he's spelled tranny as tyranny in ALL his posts in this forum (3 for 3). Anyway, xxx5, jyst fyi:

the second gen TLs (can't say for the type S autos, if there were any), the 1-2 shift was also done for you... but in 2, 3, and 4, it would hit the rev limiter and would never shift "for you"

This takes a little getting used to, b/c if you do the 1-2 shift, it will think you are doing the shift for 2-3, so it will basically do 1-2, then 3 almost right after... at least that's the way it was in a 2gen 5spd auto... I have not tried dogging it that hard in my new tl yet.

Haha, didn't mean it that way. Just thought you'd like to know so you don't go into the dealership and asking about tyranny issues

Actually, I really didn't know if there was some sort of pun i wasn't getting either.

Funny..

Although, your dealer would probably think you really were talking about their processes

My 03 TL shifted out beautifully. These 3rd gen trannies/engine match up suck!

I think if you really looked at the HP/TQ curve and overall best performance the current shift points would be quite adequate. Just because it shifts below redline means nothing. The only person that could say exactly would be the Acura engineers that made this decision and/or a run down the strip. Two 5AT's, one car shifting at 6500 in first gear and another at 6800/redline. All things equal my guess is their wouldn't be a "winner".....

The fact that it shifts itself out of first in SS mode is irritating but the fact it does so 300rpm less than redline is benign..

??? 'No more having to downshift to get up and go' then you say 'drop one gear down and you're gone!'?

6MT vs. 5AT seems all a matter of personal preference. I don't think you could ever say one is 'better' than the other. Sure, 6MT is better off the line, but unless you launch your car off the line every single time.. it's a pretty lame arguement. Personally, I like the 6MT because it was more fun... the 5AT felt neutered to me. However, the 5AT is nice when you are just cruising w/ you lady.. or driving clients around in your car. Feels a bit more classy, although less fun. To each his own.

I've hit my rev limited 3 times down. All my accident, felt like an idiot every time, heh.

Hi, I'm sorry.. I don't mean to be rude. But why complain about not able to redline it on 5AT when you can simply get the 6MT?

cblackburn, i think russdaddy was referring to "disengage clutch, shift, rev match, engage clutch" when he said "downshift." it does require more work than simply pressing down on the shifter in SS mode. why do you 5AT drivers want to redline the engine so much, anyway? just 'cause you can't?

Mainevent....

I wanted to get the 6MT, but because of the fact that other family members must drive the car (and not everyone knows how to drive stick), i had to 'settle' for the 5AT. Plus, after taking calls at the hospital, it's kind of nice that you don't have to worry about shifting yourself when stuck in traffic...thus my choice of 5AT. If I didn't have to share the car tho, I would've definitely gone with the stick
