50 HP More?

Does anybody know how Acura got an additional 50 HP out of the 2004; same size engine as my 99 TL. The sales person said that the additional HP came from a cold air intake, but my 99 stock also has a cold air intake. Anybody know?

It has only 10 hp more than 2002-3 TL type S.

Better air flow throughout from beginning to end. The main difference between a TLS and an 04 TL is the cold air intake. There are many differences between the TL (225hp) and the TLS (260hp).

Didn't they also do something with the exhaust that accounted for part of the increase?

the most drastic change is in the exhaust header. It's a very different design on the new TL.

With all the changes (cold air, exhaust, header, compression, and ??? I am surprised that the increase is only 10 hp and only a few pound feet of torque. Part of it may be that the increase is ...despite... the new ultra low emmission rating which if everything else had been kept equal may have decreased output....just a thought.

Remember, too, there are reports that Acura purposely underrated the peak output. TOV shows an Acura document that shows peak HP at 275 hp rather than the 270 hp advertised.

Lots of fine tuning everything. Consider that the original NSX circa 1991 delivered 270 HP from a 3.0 litre motor. My 2 litre S2000 puts out 240 HP (albeit at 8900 rpm).

There are a lot of differences between the type s and P motors, like cams, dual stage intake manifold, larger exhaust piping, throttle body, higher compression ect. The new Tl bumped the compression, revamped the intake and exhaust and uses different cam profiles. It only makes 10 horses more peak as stated by acura, but the car makes more power and torque throughout the rpm band than the type s. Also i heard acura underated the power of the new tl so that if the competitors get jumpy with power ratings, it can claim higher power without really doing anything to the car. Like dodge has done with the srt-4. It makes more power this year, but is more of a correction. The only thing new to the srt is the viper seas and lsd.
