One is thinner and one is thicker. What else do you need to know?

I would use 5w-20. Good 5w-20 conventionals would include Havoline, Pennzoil, or Chevron. Both Pennzoil and Havoline are avaliable at Walmart for less than $7 for a 5-quart jug.

As far as synthetic goes, Amsoil XL 5w-20 gets my vote. Although it is Group III, it performs better than the more common Group IV PAO Mobil 1 5w-20. Price wise, its about the same. Mobil 1 5w-20 is about $4.50/quart at Walmart, I can get Amsoil XL 5w-20 for about $4.80/quart when purchased by the case delivered to my door.

IMO, a conventional oil changed every 5-6,000 miles or when suggested by the MID (whichever comes first) is sufficient. Instead, use the extra money that you saved by using dino instead of synthetic toward an Auto-RX cleaning every 50,000 miles or so and your engine will stay much cleaner than using synthetic alone.

For 5-6,000 mile drains, Purolator Premium Plus or the Purolator PureOne Oil Filters are good choices.

Off topic: Michael, where did you amass the sh*tload of knowledge that you have about oils and other fluids? (No sarcasm intended)

Seriously, I wouldn't have known 4/5ths of what I know about oil today if it weren't for your informative posts/responses. Of course what I know today is still pretty basic..

If the manual says 5W-20, go 5W-20. You can get away with 5W-30, but the recomended oil is always best. How much is M1 at sears(closer than wal mart)?

josh,
5w-20 is highly recommended, but 5w-30 is acceptable if you are really unable to find 5w-20. Honda/Acuras tend to perform very well on 20wts because of the tight tolerances.

I'm just disappointed in those who purposely use a 30wt over a 20wt because they feel it's superior since they believe thicker is better.

Honestly, M1 5w-30 in a 5-quart jug for $19.99 is hard to beat at Wally's.

If they have m1 5W-20 for that price in teh 5 quart jugs I will go out and pic up 5 of em. I will call first though. What are the negative effects of using the wrong oil. My fathers car is drinking it(yes the ford), and he comes home al satisfied, I put some 10W-40 in my car, thats what my dad always used, if/when he does that to the TL, is their going to be a problem, will it need to be drained? P.S. I will put a big label on the oil fill cap that says M1 5W-20 ONLY, so this doesnt happen to a car that is better then a beater.

Michael would using Auto-RX cleaning on a vehicle with say 15,000 miles be to early? Any advantages or disadvantages to this? Also how many miles do you drive with it in the engine? Thanks.

Donte99TL: Don't know why you're even thinking about that. I'd wait until 50,000 miles.
