48k '05 TL Navi Tranny is dead

Got a call from the service people at acura today, and the whining noise coming from my transmission was not a drive shaft but a dying tranny. It was noticed for the last few weeks when the car is in third, fourth when the gas is applied, the whining noise comes. Its very suddle and sounds more like air filter, but turned out its not.

Glad am still under warranty.

I know, it is so close, but I had my warranty extended anyways a couple of months ago out to 75k, just in case.

Unless Acura changed its policy - which is highly unlikely - the ONLY thing you can get is refurbished transmission. I had been through this twice with 2000TL... Dealership is at liberty to tell whatever they want to...

Basically when I am in 3rd or 4th applying the gas lightly generates this whining noise for a few seconds, if you press it hard the whining is not there. That was my symptom, first they changed the torque converter about a month ago, now they changed the drive shaft yesterday, and called me that the tranny is most likely dead.

Well I guess if I get a refurb and acura doesn't put out a super inovative '09 with a AWD, I am going to the other side this summer i.e. 550 or 545. This is the 3rd acura that I have owned.

Acura has a place that does all their rebuilds. They ship a replacement unit to the dealer and install in your car. Your current trans goes to the rebuild shop.
The case, internal gears and other good parts get receycled into another rebuilt unit.

Interesting. I think my actual gears are messed up.

lol- figures, the part I use to illustrate a point is whats wrong with yours

I am gen2 and our 3rd gear clutchpak gives out and the trans slips or goes into 2nd by itself and stays there~

I am an automatic too, but I do check which gear it is in. And when I was driving in manual mode it would do the same so try it in that too.

Does anyone know if the 2007 TL-S uses a different transmission than the base TL? I think I remember reading that the TL-S uses a modified RL transmission. If this is true, is it more durable?..

I have 6mt and my tranny was grinding on 2nd and popping out on 3rd. So i believe auto and manuals are having tranny problems.

My 2004 TL had the tranny replaced due to a whining noise. Turned out there was a messed up bearing in there causing the subtle whining noise at speeds between 50 and 60 MPH.

im going to sound really ignorant when i say this, but i dont care...why cant acura just make reliable transmissions...do several other companies have this problem as well, or just acura? all my accords have had rock solid transmissions...

This tranny problem keeps haunting Acura. I had a tranny on my 2nd Gen CL-S that downshifted to 2nd gear at 80mph and almost killed me. It downshifted so hard that i broke 3 engine mounts and lost control of the car!!! Is Honda/Acura gonna wait for someone to actually die to do something about it? After my tranny died it was replaced with a damn reburbished one that started acting weird and shifted way before redline. I was scared to drive the car and had to get rid of it.
While my car was in the dealer i was put in a loaner TL and I fell in love with it. They told me the 3rd Gen TL's had a new tranny free of problems. I see a lot of dead tranny threads lately. Whats going on? im scared lol

I agree about acura making a reliable tranny but my moms accord lx tranny went at 50k and my other friends acoord tranny made it to about 70k so I think honda/acura as a whole have glass tranny's. I thought with the 3g tl they worked out the bug's. I was originally looking at a 2g but the tranny was a biggest factor in my decision to get the 3g. you'd think after about 10 years they can get a tranny right

Yeah, guess what the above member was right. I got a REFURBISHED tranny.
I think after all these years with Integras, and TLs I am out the door once the new 5 series start dropping a bit in price.

Hopefully this is something that is few and far between. I can tell you though my transmission seems to have trouble up shifting. It has been intermittent, but is becoming more frequent.

I believe severe driving conditions disregards the MID and goes by a 60k interval on the trans fluid. I'm only at 23k, if I keep the car that long I will do the 3X flush method at 60k.

I'm at 45k on my '05. I think I'll do a drain and fill every oil change just to play it safe.

Careful with that. Others on here have said that, if your tranny is on the verge of failing, changing the fluid can push it over the edge. Or was that your intent, so you can get it replaced while still under warranty?

Wish I'd thought of that...

Well, the 5-series has its own share of problems as well.

Besides, who knows how reliable the new ZF 6-speed automatics in the 5-series are.

I would have no problems with a remanufactured transmission. They are just as good as new.

The tranny failures on the 3G are nowhere near as common as on the 2G TL, thankfully. The 3G's tranny is different from the 2G's, other than the first 14k 2004 cars, which were the same.

I wonder whether these have a different part failing other than the 2nd gear clutchpack, which was the source of a recall for 2004s several years ago.
