3rd Gen Engine is QUICKER after Break in

Well, I've now logged on 1,000 miles on my TL, and I have to say this thing seems like its getting quicker. I first floored it at 400 miles, and I was pretty dissapointed because I felt my 02 TLS was noticibly faster and meaner in VTEC. I pushed the TL hard every 150 miles, and with everytime it seems like its getting quicker and meaner in VTEC. Also, I've noticed that the 1st-2nd gear transition that used to short shift at 6500 RPM is now shifting closer to redline.

However, one thing that I dont like and has not gone away (but gotten better) is the hesitation for 2nd gear to pick up after going WOT in 1st gear. It's strange because my TL-S is on its 3rd tranny and it never showed that sign. Anyone else notice this?

I will race my TLS and 04 against eachother and give you guys honest results at some point soon.

This is the interesting part... also, cannot wait to see your testing reports...

04tl..04tl..

What's up Steve?

I should come by sometime with my camera and take some pictures of your new car. Let me drive one of the TL's when you race them against each other.

Later,
-Brian.

The transmission is "adaptive," but so is/was the one in the 2nd Gen.

I've found that the car definitely drives differently than new - I have 8000 miles over 10 months. The only downside is that my gas mileage (in mixed city/highway) has suffered. Total highway mileage is still 31-32.

Wow 31-32 is amazing. I don't think I've ever gotten that high mileage wise, unless I hopped on the freeway right away and reset the counter.

I typically get about 23-24 with mixed freeway/local driving (70% highway).

after about 3500 miles, i'm still only getting 18-21mpg mixed driving.. i'd say probably 80% highway.. sometimes with traffic.. so more realistically 60% highway... what is going on w/ my mileage?

I'm only getting 15-21 but I'm usually 80% city and rest freeway. Most of the time I see it jumping between 16 and 17mpg; I see it get down to 15 when I start racing it a lot..

my average mpg is very depressing and I'm spending $35 a week on gas and I barely even drive it. I have exactly 5000 miles on it.. service is due! I'm gonna mention this to them to see if it's normal.

I get btwn 24 to 27 MPG on a 45 min commute, 32 miles (mixture of country road, 4 lane hwy w/ lights and a freeway), averaging 43 mph. I'm pretty happy with this. I'm at 2500 miles

I wish I could get 24-27mpg.. that extra 6mpg on a 15 gallon fillup equates to about 90 miles.. not a negligible distance

Doesn't seem right. The worst I've gotten is 25 and the best was 28 MPG.

I have about 1200 miles on mine and I'm getting about 24-25 mixed city/highway driving. As I do more highway, I notice the numbers go up, just haven't taken a long enough trip to get to 30.

I think part of it has to do w/ the way I drive. I do notice I drive a bit more aggressively in the TL than I have in other cars, but even driving in a more conservative fashion, the absolute best mileage I was able to get out of my car was 22mpg (w/out flooring it, accelerating quickly, and anything else I might consider fun )

I am getting an average of 26 MPG during my break-in period. I just went over 600 miles to day.. car is 10 days old. I'm pretty pleased with that.

The only time I've noticed the hesitation is when I have VSA on. I think now that it's combined with drive-by-wire throttle it is a lot more proactive (read: overzealous) in controlling wheelspin and it saps a LOT of power. I find myself turning the VSA off when I want to have a little fun.

never hit better than 26mpg

i took it on a 3hr stretch of drive on I-5 and was just keeping it at a consistent 80mph and still could not get that thing to show better...

does A/C affect mpg? I use to have a Solara that would get better gas mileage. I know that it has a smaller motor but I would drive it the exact same way and be able to attain 450+miles

Maybe you have to wait a little longer... car by car.

Mine has 14k now, and I did get 500+ miles one time when cruising on the highway. So far, I use Honda genuine Engine oil and filter with 93 gasoline.
