3rd gear fix re-visited

I have a 05 6mt. While under warranty in 2006 I got the 3rd gear issue fixed. But lately I am having trouble with third gear again. Is anyone else who had this fix experiencing any relapse.

Anyone on this forum with a 6MT is going to tell you to just put in GMSMFM and call it a day I have never had mine fixed at a dealer but I did have a 3rd gear issue and the GM "magic juice" fixed it.

^^

This. Of all of the 3rd gears issues I've read, I don't recall anyone coming back and saying, "The GM Synchromesh FM didn't work."

Maybe there are some, but it works for SO many, anything else seems like a complete wasite of time to me.

I've read numerous threads/posts/websites about the 3rd gear issue. Honda/Acura did issue "updated" parts to try and fix the problem, however, there seems to be a lot of mechanical processes going on during the 3rd gear shift. Some people have reported issues even after having the 3rd gear TSB repair procedure performed on their car.

I had the TSB performed on my car over 10K ago and haven't had any issues. I did switch to GMSMFM fluid immediately after getting the car back, but have since switched back to Honda MTF...no problems.

Many say to just pop in the GM fluid but I've also read about ppl having success with putting in the "new" Honda MTF. I think the difference was that the Honda MTF would only last < 10K.

gwiffer, can you notice any differences between the two? How long are you running on the Honda MTF?

the GM stuff should be changed in about 30k intervals.

I had the GMSMFM fluid in for ~9K miles/1.5yr (I don't drive very much). All shifts were becoming rough. I switched it out to Honda MTF ~500 miles/2mo ago; I really like the way it shifts. I think that under my specific driving conditions, the additive package wears out relatively quickly.

I'll be changing it out atleast once a year, now. I think running shorter OCIs with the cheaper Honda MTF will be the best for me. My car is a daily driver and I only go on very short trips.

When I bought the GMSMFM fluid it was ~$11 shipped per bottle (case of 6); I can buy Honda MTF for $5-6 shipped per bottle (I believe). The cost difference isn't very significant when you're only swapping 2.5qts at a time, so I would suggest just trying them out and seeing what you like.

FYI, I have been double clutching all downshifts since having the 3rd gear TSB performed.

Good looking out.

Another satisfied Friction Modified customer here.

Ive have never actually read what other ppl experiences with their 3rd gear issue was but for me, all I can say that i would call on 3rd gear but she wouldn't answer.

Today got the AC delco FM stuff put in then went for spirited run.

I found 1st and 2nd no problem, then I called for 3rd and she was there in a heartbeat.
