3rd and 4th gear pressure switches!

My car: 06 TL - 73,500 miles
I asked a mechanic at the Acura dealership how much labor would be for changing my 3rd and 4th gear pressure switches, he quoted me I believe $140 for just the labor.

He gave me a parts quote but it was just ridiculous compared to the amazing deal Bruce(Acktl05) gave me for both switches and gasket($80)

I felt as if the mechanic spoke non sense, kept repeating that the switches will not do anything and that he can't guarantee my shifts will be smooth. I felt as if he had no clue what he was talking about quite honestly. If I was to have them switched out, it is more of a preventive maintenance then anything because I've read that its better then not doing it or doing it too late.

My question is would you guys recommend just getting it done for a peace of mind? I have no transmission issues, I would like to keep it that way if switches really can cause a problem over time.

Only reason I wanted to have it done is because I also wanted to do a 3x3 ATF refill because I don't think the two previous owners had it done before. (Even if they have I don't have any record over it unless I skipped over it, so basically I would know when all maintenance is due when necessary.)

It is very easy to do this yourself if you do anything yourself on your car like an oil change and have the tools. See the diy threads for more info but for me it was easy on my 05:
- jack the car up in the front, place jack stands
- take off the front driver wheel
- remove the plastic wheel well cover after popping clips with a flathead
- use I believe a 10mm socket to take off the cover by the switches
- replace switches
- you only get a few drops of fluid while doing this, you won't have to drain the tranny beforehand or anything.

+1 ^ Is a super easy DIY. The biggest pain in the ass is removing the drivers side rim seriously. I did mine when I was doing a 1x3, that way when I removed the pressure switches, no fluid came out.

Definitely do it. Your shifts will be smooth as butter after it's done. My car only has 55k on it and I had mine done and it feels like a brand new car when shifting!

^^^

dude you gonna love this shifts !!!

WORD OF CAUTION/ADVICE

When doing this you will loose very very little fluid...so if you are doing this by itself make sure you check the fluid level after you do this....if you are doing along with a drain and refill, make sure you plug these out AFTER the drain and BEFORE the fill....

I had an oil change done at the same time at Goodyear, so the car was already on the lift- $29 to put both switches in- $140 is way too much.

did my switches and 1x3 today and the tranny is noticeably smoother, before doing the switches i had a BAD 4th gear drone on the highway and now its completely gone. My car actually feels like it has more power now, the tranny isn't lazy now it downshifts on a dime.

Has anyone replaced these switches and found fix for the vibration/shutter felt while going at around 50mph and 1500rpm?

Replacing the switches fixed the shudder at ~50 MPH (4th to 5th shift) for me. It also fixed the shudder at 30 MPH (2nd to 3rd shift), and the 4th to 1st downshift surge when you're braking before an intersection.

I replaced them yesterday, it did help reduce the vibration but it is certainly still there. You are lucky my friend.!

Definitely an improvement. Part throttle shifts are very smooth and quick. Full throttle are very quick, well at least 1-2 and 2-3. Roads still have some damp sections after rain late this afternoon. 3-4 full throttle means speeds not particularly safe on a moderately curvy road...

So I'm definitely going to get this done to my car. How often would you guys recommend to get it done as preventative maintenance? Every 30-40k miles???

^ From what I read, change it every couple years so 30-40k is about right.

Hey All,

When replacing the pressure switches (I did some reading on the board), and you do not HAVE to do a transmission drain and fill right? I read that is optional, but not required. Just wanted to clarify and make sure of this.

Also in terms of labor, what should this actually cost and what would be fair?
In my case, I won't be doing the labor myself so I wanted to find out from other board members.

30-40K seems a little overkill...60K is more along the lines when I would suggest...

Yes, when you change the switches, you only loose very little fluid...a drain and refill is not necessary but definitely recommended...

wrt cost, depends where you take it...if you are local, I would do it for you for a case of beers...

if you take it into a dealer you are looking at 100-150 bucks...total time to do it will be an hour TOPS...all you need to do is take the driver side wheel out and pull back on the fender liner/etc

well for a 04-06 is that simple, 07-08 TL has another switch and the location is different than 04-06 model therefore the labor will be slight higher than 04-06 model.

^ true that, plus with the 04-06, you can replace the tranny filter too but not possible with 07-08. So if you have 04-06, it is best to also replace the filter while doing the 3rd and 4th gear pressure switchs along with the 3x3 drain and refill as you will loose some juice as well with the filter replacement job.

Yes, its one more switch...its a little tough to get to, but if you take the strut bar off, it becomes very easy...it does add another 30 odd minutes to the job...

Yes, I have switched my filter every 60K miles as well...I hate a 3x3 as you are dumping out new/fresh fluid...I rather do a drain and refill every 15K miles after the initial 4x3

For example, this is the schedule I have followed so far:
147K: 1x3
148K: switches and 1x3
149K: filter and 1x3
150K: 1x3
165K: 1x3
180K: 1x3

so after the initial 4x3 and switches and filter, I do a 1x3 every 15K miles....I think this is better than just doing a 3x3 or a 4x3 every 60K miles

^^^^that is the proceedure in my book once you replace the switches but the initial 3x3 is trying to get all the gunk from inside out and lets the trany have time to adjust to the clean fluid. I did 5x3 just to be sure. Each time between drain and refill is 10k miles, now I will do drain and fill every 15k miles.

OP you should get 3x3 prior to replace the switches so the trany have time to adjust to the new fluid also the new fluid will lube most of the internal component and once you have new switches in it will run perfect with the new fluid. Don't be cheap.

Just curious. What tranny fluid you used? And whether you mixed them like racing and regular? Or just straight racing or regular?
