3G TL's design is timeless
3G TL's design is timeless
Do you guys agree? I think 10 years from now the 3G TL will still look as hot as it does right now. There are only a few cars that have been designed like that IMO. The Acura Legend is a good example.
i myself have a TL and wish that this could hold true.. but from what i've felt and seen is that... once a model is replaced by the newer generation. The previous generation isn't so appealing any more... (such as the camry)... and the 2nd generation TL ( i mean theres nothing wrong with these cars they are still quite new cars and look/peform great.)
.. but IMO when it comes to attraction, it kinda dies a little after a newer generation comes out...
because cars these days are only gonna look sexier and sexier (well at least thats what the car companies are attempting to do)
but one car that seems to hold its body image is the civic i believe, IMO

As much as I love the 3G TL, its look is pretty trendy and may not hold up as well as the 2G Legend, though I hope I'm wrong about that. The 2G Legend still looks hot, almost 15 years after its release.
I think it will be... I mean, if you think about and really look at it, the TL already IS a timeless design... the 3gen has evolved and looks very different, but you can still tell that it came from the original design... even the headlights, different as they may be from those of older TLs, still have a certain something in the design that reminds me of older TLs... How timeless will the design be? Who knows... All we can do is speculate, hope, and enjoy what we have
I love well maintained Legend coupes.
I hope the TL holds up as well over the years, but I think it might not. No big deal, I plan on driving mine for at least 300k miles (I'm at 38k right now) no matter what it looks like.

There is a clean, chiseled look to the TL which makes it stand out from the 2G TL, interchangeable rent-a-Buicks and -Pontiacs, Bangled-BMWs and inoffensive but heavy-shouldered Nissan and Infiniti sedans (excepting the G35 coupe). The TL is somewhat like an Alfa Romeo sedan (excepting the 164), without the dripping oil and visits to the garage.

I think the TL falls into this category. There's no denying that a 3G TL w/ an aspec kit will look great 15 years from now.

The 04-08 TL probably won't be timeless in terms of aethetics because it didn't destroy the other cars during its time. But nonetheless it is a stunning automobile on the road, as I often find myself rotating my neck as i drive past them left and right on the interstate. I have yet to come across a type S though...still waiting in anticipation day after day.

if you want to talk timeless, the MB 350, 380, 450 560SL, now that was a timeless beauty, the two bodies that have followed will never been the status magnet then 560SL was and is. IMO the g3 TL will be around for a number of years but will grow old sooner than most would like to see it age
The second generation Legend is one of the best looking cars out there considering its about 15 years old. The line on that car were done perfectly. I had a 93 Legend LS sedan and I use to get compliments on it all the time and people would ask me what year it was and I would tell them a 93 and they would look at me in shock. Im trying to find a 94-95 legend coupe.
I guess it will depend on how the 4th/5th generation TLs evolve. I'd say the Vigor and 1st/2nd gen TLs had a similar style and evolved nicely. As we have noted the 3rd gen TL has a new look and hopefully the 4th gen will look somewhat similar as well. I always like the 911s because of this styling evolution thing going on. Another line of cars that shows evolution is Suburu's Legacy- it seems to get better each time but shows some resemblence to earlier generations each time. The Imprezza is a different story now with the funky grill now.
We have noted that sometimes manufacturers screw up a good design.
I had a 3rd gen Maxima previously and did not even consider looking at the current 6th generation Maxima because of the looks of it. Another example is the VW Jetta- the previous gen looked clean and I'm not sold on the new Gen at all. Someone has already pointed out the BMWs as well- I think all the previous gen BMWs looked better and from the sounds of things were probably more reliable as well.
Time will tell on the TL but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll like the TL the way I liked my Maxima when it was 14 years old.

Very difficult to include "muscle cars" in this thread though, becuz they are kind of like a symbol of yesteryear. Classics and antiques if you will. So yes, they will always appeal to many. Including myself. Besides the mods were endless with those cars. They were hobby cars and brought out the driver enthusiast in people! What couldn't you do with them. Don't you just hear that song "This Is Our Country" when you think of them? LOL!
The TL now, hmm, I love my car. I mean, I am ecstatic about having one. First car I have had, with the Dodge Stealth being a very close second, that had everything I wanted on it and the whip appeal to match! I will always love it, but I don't know if it could be considered timeless. It is very popular, so it has a shot at that I guess. I mean, you see them everywhere. I have a little game where I kill time counting how many I see before I get to my exit off of 270 Hwy. LOL! The new model will surely change a lot of people's minds I am sure, if they come out with the upgrades we are expecting they will. If a person can afford the newer model, no, I do not believe that they will say I would rather have an older one becuz they look better. Would you rather have a new 350Z or a 300ZX? The older Z looks like a clunker compared to the newer one.
Funny story. I was telling my daughter a couple of years ago about Daddy buying a car (my 03 TL-S) and when I pointed to it in the lot out the window, she thought I was pointing at a 300ZX. I was thinking nah, but I would. My daughter was relieved because she said the Z looks old. Then I thought of it. Yeah, I mean, it just looks older. And THAT was my fave even as close as a few years back! This is what I think of when it comes to cars like ours (3G TL). Yes, it looks nice now. But man, when they drop that SH-AWD or RWD TL, you know that will be hot!! Just look at that Accord Coupe Concept! No, it's nice for now. But the newer model will probably just make it remain so. I mean, hey, I am not one of the guys who jumped ship and said let me at the new TL-S. (Although TLFourplay's TL-S makes u wanna!!!) But a lot of people think it looks nicer than the '06. Uh, that was just last year!! See what I mean? Just a matter of time, especially with limited mod capability, that this becomes just another good car during that stretch. Same with the G35. The model coming out next (08?) is going to make that one now look like an afterthought. Just like the present one makes the ones before it look like that. I'm not even going to waste time when that 2011 TL hits! I will be all on it!! And this one would have been just fun while it lasted. Read the previous threads. A lot of people agree in just about every thread you read on which car people like better. I don't see many arguments about 3G vs. 2G. And def not 2G vs. 1G which I believe is hideous. I said "I" believe ok! I just don't like boxy cars.
You'll see. It's just a very nice car for now. But people can't wait to get the...

Think about it, the ones you see at shows look way better than most cars of today, thats mainly caused by a restored exterior, and then they are up to date again
I've always said that Japanese cars have classic designs (which stand the test of time), German cars have trendy designs (which look outdated as soon as the new versions come out), and American cars are 50/50 (some cars look great for years, some don't).
I definitely think that the 3G TL looks very classy - it's edgey, but nothing is overstated. I personally think that the 2G TLs still look HOT, so I think the chances of the 3G TL looking hot after 5-10 years are still pretty good.
On the other hand, I think today's American cars are going to age really poorly. Interiors and exteriors are VERY overstated. You just get a sense of desparation from the designers; you can tell that they're trying too hard. The TL (and Japanese cars in general) have a kind of understated design that makes them look better longer. They make it look as if coming up with the styling was effortless; nothing is forced.

i also think that the 3G tl will still look great in 5+ years. the lines on the car show aero, sporty, and luxurious in an effortless way. when you guys are walking out to your car and see it in the parking lot compared to what else is around you still go Daaaamn that ride looks sweet. I had the 04 NBP leased and purchased and 06 Anthracit. I live in miami and miami is full of 50K +rides all over but you know when you drive the tl what you got. and after 3 years of the tl im still no where near tired of its design

Personally, I do like the Supra as well, it's a great looking car.

even when i look at a 1st gen TL, it still seems modern compared to other cars on the road.
