I had a Kia Soul for a rental once.

I actually didn't hate it. I thought it'd actually be a really good "GTFO and go to college" car for a kid.

 

one of our system engineer mgrs sits behind me.. he's a big watch aficionado.. he has a couple of watches in the 10-20k range.
He drives an 05 TL.. he freaked out about the APP sensor once, helped him out. He asked how I knew so much.. poker face.

I have a Fossil too. It's nice...but not like, 20K nice or anything.

 

I'm not going to even say I'm a collector because frankly, the 4 Swiss pieces I have does not really count as a "collection", IMO. That being said, while it may be a faux pas, I do not really put much weight on the re-sale value of a timepiece...For me, it's the look, the calibre, and the complications. If it appreciates, great...but, if not, I'm really not going to lose sleep over it. As far as I'm concerned, these pieces or what I do accumulate in my lifetime are all going to Little Cha and his own little chas...I would not expect a sale to be necessary. If anything, the only thing probably sellable would be my hoard of robots. But, I would not expect the Swiss pieces to go away...nor my Grandpas' beloved Orient that passed to me when he died.

The Grand Seiko...especially THAT piece...has had stellar STELLAR reviews and having researched the engineering and horological talent gone into it, it's on par with some of the so-called "power-house" watches from Vacheron, Rolex, and similar...for HALF the price -- and in some cases even more depending on the Swiss brand.

I will buy two more watches in my lifetime: One has to be a Grand Seiko and the second is a tourbillon complication (i.e. the TAG Heuer). The latter of course, will be awhile...but, it will be mine...

 

$835 later...my FX is back. Sure, it's getting up there in years since it's a 2010...but, going from a Soul to the Sea Cucumber is well, a nice step up.


Why $835...? Well, $500 is the deductible and the rest is towards the overage days I needed to pay the rental because Statefarm doesn't go past 30 days.

And oh, FAWK YOU, NISSAN CANADA for refusing to pay for the overage days despite the fact the damn light was not in stock (how is that MY problem??).

 

Back to the Seiko, I'd probably take the white-faced SBGC001...but, dunno. Both versions are tits.

 

A guy in my office recently got into watches and started speaking real highly of the Grand Seiko. From what little I've read, they seem really keen. I wouldn't mind getting one some day. A long time from now, but some day.

 

That Spring Drive they have is...amazing.

The Japanese...when they set their mind to something...they are on par with the best. Heck, even if you want to just start modestly, a Seiko Presage or even the very inexpensive Seiko 5 autos are worth looking into.

Doesn't have to be Swiss (or German).

 

I actually have a Seiko 5 inbound from the motherland right now. Should have it in a couple weeks.
