I'm looking for some quick advice, just to get me started in the right direction. I'm interested in picking up a camera in the not so distant future. Something that isn't hella expensive, yet something that I can grow with (so, uh.. Midrange?).

Are there brands I should avoid? Are there brands I should stick with? Or is it a "per model" kind of deal, where all makes generally have good cameras and shit ones also? Canon? Nikon? Sony? Olympus? Anything else? I have zero knowledge on the matter... Not even sure where to start reading and researching.

What kind of budget should I be looking at? Would $800US suffice (I'm thinking in or around $1000 CAN)??

What should I be looking for? What should I avoid? I don't want to end up spending 4-500 bucks and then regretting the purchase and thinking I should have spent a little bit more. Help a ninja out!

play with some cams. ask friends or family if they have cams you can play with. brand doesnt matter so much as to button layout and grip comfortability.

kinda like picking out a car...always function over form

a friend let me borrow a Nikon and that's what I learned on. so I was comfortable with the menu layout, button layout of a Nikon.

all of those are good places to snag used camera gear, Adam.
Best advice is buy the same brand that all your bros that shoot have, or the people that'll be giving you advice.
I had canon, went Nikon and thought it took sharper photos, but that might been lens related.

Either way, buy a decent body like a D90 or D7000 (if you go Nikon) and you'll LIKELY never need more than that.
You can buy glass used as necessary...and as budget allows. I'd be glad to point you at cheap glass that'll give you crazy good shots.

You don't have a kid, but a nice house, so I'm assuming it's to shoot the wife, house and car?

Sony Alpha series.. alpha6k or higher
Glass is expensive, but it's fast AF and the body / kit is cheap.
APS-C sensor
Super fucking portable
Yumcha loves Sony, so he'll like you like 0.001 cm more.

Great fucking images.. even amateurs who don't know shit about photography can take great pics with it right out of the box.
Everyone jumps on it's dick or is butthurt AF about it.. Yay!

I still love my Nikons, but tough to argue against the Sony.

If I were starting over, I'd probably give the sony a shot...
but then again, when you hear someone say it's as good as XYZ brand, I usually stick with the tried and true one.

one thing I kinda wish I'd have gotten which the lower model 5200 had was the rear display that folds out for taking weird angle shots.
Although it takes so much power from the shutter that it's annoying...so I don't even use the display as a viewfinder either.

I just want to get into photography in general. I really don't know anyone who's into taking pics, so I can't really ask around friends or fam. My brother has a Nikon D40, but he doesn't even use it anymore. He was going to sell it to me for $100 without any lenses... I was like "uh, I can buy it used for 130-150 with a lens..." Plus it is an 8 year old camera now... not really interested in it, to be honest.

I guess I'm not too overly concerned about button layout and such.. I have no experience with anything besides point and shoot cameras, so it's essentially starting new on all fronts.

As far as shooting stuff.. honestly, anything and everything. House isn't anything crazy, lol, but yeah, maybe the car, the wife , spiders, wildlife, other cars, architecture, when hiking, etc...

It seems there is unanimous voices talking Nikon... I'll look at the ones you mentioned, J. I'll take a look at Sony also. My dad was telling me they are fast AF, however, he's no photographer either.

i like the Sony, wife just likes what she likes and since it was a different layout from her preferred canon she didnt get into it. i have been meaning to send her to a class just to get her familiar with it all somemore. i got her it with the 3 lenses 18-55, the portrait lens and the 55-170 or whatever.

Charging you for an 8 year old camera that he doesn't use anymore?
Doesn't sound like you need a camera, sounds like you need a new brother.

My dad was talking about that too... I think Costco has the 5500 available, and it has that tilt screen. I think the 5500 was $1000 here at Costco... if that is the case, the 7000 is likely beyond my budget.

Don't buy new, Adam...substantial savings going used. I think I paid $800 for the 7000 like 4 years ago...
they even rate them by condition and how many clicks they have.

To me, that's the best $100 upgrade that'll take you to the next level.
Wide angle for scenery and rooms in a house.
Long range I bought NON VR used for $80...not terrible, but not super crisp or capable of fast motion from far.

Canon fanboy checking in.

Canon because that's what I've always had. Old 35mm P&S film camera, and then two P&S digital cameras (after a brief time with my first Digi, a whopping 1.3MP Olympus P&S) before picking up a Canon T4i.

It's fine for learning with. And probably more than I'll ever really need.

So there's a non-Nikon data point for you Taco.

Canon. Works fine.

I'm telling you homer sexuals.. stop playing with each other's dicks for a moment..
The Sony is inexpensive and fast AF AF (fast as fuck auto focus). That alone is worth it.
Get it before I pull out.
