Some cutting is ok, but i always feel it's best to cut as little as possible. I'm a sucker for paint. I rather buy a car with better condition paint and higher miles, than vice versa. Most people don't know how to wash a car properly or rely on those god awful car wash brushes.
"Oh, let me wash my dirty, mud caked wheels with this brush. Now I'll rinse it (or not) and wash the body of the car" noooooooooooo!!!!!!

Griots basically comes in four steps with their pads color matched for each. 1 being abrasive 4 being like scatchx (very mild). I've never had to do anything other than 3 or 4 and have had a bottle of 2 sitting there unused for years. The civic needs a lot of love though and I imagine I'll have to bust out the 2 for it. (women and their heels...)
Polish aside I'm a huge fan of their sealant. It goes on so fast and easy and comes off just the same. Lasts forever.
I'm sure someone has a better recommendation with some of the products you can get at autogeek (Pinnacle, etc) but Griots has served me well. Plus a good portion of their lineup can be had at Advance.
Also their leather restore product is awesome.

Neither autogeek or advance are available to Canadians.

So 105 = Griots 3, 205 = Griots 4. Basically the same stuff and both are very fool proof.
Naturally you always want to cut the least amount you have to. But I'd rather cut and not have scratches then wax and have scratches....
+1 on the brush at drive in car wash places. I literally cringe when I see that shit happen. Stupid plebs.

What do you tossers use to get rid of the superficial paint transfer from inconsiderate fat hillbillies bouncing their doors off their fatguts into your car?
I have a couple stubborn spots on the truck that I'd like to get out.

It's just nice to find a car that hasn't been put through the ringers with its paint. I always cry a little when I see a one year old black car already swirled to shit. Cutting as little as possible is highly desirable for me because there is no fixing the car without cutting a good level of clear off, or paying to repaint the entire car which generally doesn't make much sense financially. Maybe not as bad of an issue down south, but up here, keeping as much clear as possible goes a long way.

Make sure the car is cleaned, 2 buckets method yadda yadda. Sometimes a scratch or paint transfer looks much worse than it is because of the dirt and dust surrounding it
Once you've dried it, time for some elbow grease. For some small paint transfer start with something very mild like Meguiar ScratchX on a microfiber. Make a pad out of the microfiber by folding it, something you can put a decent amount of pressure on with your fingers.
Put a quarter size dollop of ScratchX on the microfiber and start rubbing in small circles over the scratch (if there's one, there's sometimes one or a few under the paint transfer), don't go with the scratch but against it (perpendicular). When it's beginning to dry reapply some to the microfiber and go at it again. After a few passes the scratches and paint transfer should be completely gone if they were just clear coat scuffs. Obviously does not apply when the scratch goes through the paint.
Once this is done, clean any excess (read buff out) with the rest of the microfiber (there shouldn't be much excess though). You can also wash it away if you're really anal about it. Then spray wax the area to protect it until next wax.
ScratchX is extremely mild, it's like remotely impossible to damage your paint more with it unless you're using gorilla force or rubbing for 2 hours straight.

My unprofessional process is pretty easy...
April/May
- Wash with Dawn (do NOT let it sit in the sun - rinse quickly), dry
- Clay
- Wash with Dawn (do NOT let it sit in the sun - rinse quickly), dry
- Porter cable with Griots #4
- Wash with water only, dry
- Visual inspection for remaining issues under a HPS light
- Porter cable with #4 more or if needed #3 then #4
- Wash with water only, dry
- Best of Show (carnuba), let sit overnight, remove
- Speedwax over the entire car at finish
Every quarter...
- Wash with product safe soap
- Best of Show (carnuba), let sit overnight, remove
- Speedwax over the entire car at finish
