What is crazy and insane for you non-Classical-music-listening barbarians is that Nobuyuki Tsujii is BLIND. F*cking blind.

And he learns ALL of that...and won the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition...arguably one of the most difficult competitions to win. Amazing.

I learned and played some of those pieces before.

And beat those gwai-ros with their mistake-riddled playing.

Contrasting in parenting. I make a tiny mistake or lose (meaning, don't get 1st place) and I get punished.

Those gwai-ro kids playing pieces that are 10 times easier makes a bazillion mistakes and often can't complete the piece get huge hugs and pats on the back for a good job by the parents.

Then, you get accepted into Julliard...but, without scholarship...and instead, get berated for not working hard enough to get scholarship.

Yes.

I listen to classical.. not barbarian.

I listen to everything, and even though I deny country, I listen to country too..

Blind musicians can't read music, but many musicians close their eyes to focus their senses when playing. I think most concert musicians use sheet music as a crutch. If they had to remember every note, they could.

That's the thing...once you are familiar with a piece, the ability to SEE is not a big deal.

However, fathoming HOW a blind person learns ALL of those notes...and in that competition, there was some on-the-spot Chamber music components he needed to learn...That is mind-blowing.

He toured NA 2 years ago and I had the opportunity to shake his hand and meet him...What a fascinating and truly, beautiful human being.

Oh, you know it. All my biggest "rivals" were other kids.

Thankfully, my dragon-tiger parents were not the type to be smug about their own kids' accomplishments. But, other parents were of that ilk. Man, you'd think they raised something that invented quantum physics.

I will admit those were win and lose...the kids were good. But, it was always great in the occasions I did win. To see the smug parents look in shock and then embarrassingly make some cockamanie excuse about too many maff tests or something from skoo.

Maff contests...same thing.

Who here had to write Gauss and/or Pascal Maff Contests growing up?

The biggest shock in my life growing up was when I went to a gwai-ro friend's house to work on a school project.

"You can watch TV after school?!??"

Then...

"You don't need to do the maff questions from the next chapter yet??!?"

Then...

"You have a TV and Nintendo in your room?!??!?"

Then...

"You can pick and choose what you get to eat on the table?!??!??"

Oh, yeah...a few of those too. Two family friends with girls who were absolute goodie-two-shoes...

WELL, they were NOT. In some family-type parties, I would hang out with them in the basement and chat and they'd say how they sneak out of the house at night to smoke pot and cigarettes with their gwai-ro BFs who were 4-5 years older.

They would say they hate Classical music and that rap and hip-hop were the best.

I'm like WTF!??

And yeah...later in the evening, they go to the living room and play some Brahms and Chopin.

Stupid system likes to create duplicate posts sometimes. Ugh.

Other weird quirks is like when you click on a thread (usually for Automotive News) in your User CP screen, it takes you to a COMPLETELY different thread. It's like you went down into Wonderland or something.

I liken compile failures like going 9/10ths of the way before you are cock-blocked just right before Mount St. Helen's.
