Don't get me wrong, if you take networking certs seriously and back it up with experience.. it can be lucrative to a point. But if you think you're going to get your CCNA cert and make $60k, you'll need connections.
If you are serious, get your CCNA and CCNP. Follow-up CCNA with Net+, MCSE and MCITP.
My boy has been in IT for 20 years. He even got his EE degree to be more competitive. He was the Administrator for many companies before stepping into a government position (not IT related) to make more money.
The thing that really sucks about IT certs.. is most schools are bullshit and are only interested in raping your wallet and sticking it up your ass. CCNA course can be covered in 4 months, yet some programs break it up into 4 sections over 1-2 years. Check your local community colleges for classes and stay away from the professional schools that costs many thousands.
Best bet (not too many do this anymore).. get into a job that pays for your education and IT certs.

My buddy also has his CCNA and CCNP. He runs his own business and it's very lucrative for him. I'm planning on going for CCNA and CCNP and then going back for maybe the data center cert or security cert. It seems a lot of the bigger corporations are getting away from the in-house IT and looking for a cheaper solution through outsourcing the work. I'm pretty well rounded but have no formal documentation to prove it.

I think the CCIE is crap.. just another "pat me on the back" cert that lines the pockets of everyone on board. Unless it's the end all cert that doesn't require a recert.
Experience is most important and having a line of references to back up your work. Companies can only outsource their IT issues to a point. A skilled in-house professional will always be needed, even if it's contracted by hourly allotments.

I agree with every part of that post. CCIE does seem like a bit of overkill, as does the CCAr. To me, if you have the experience to back up a CCNA or CCNP, you have proven a good bit. The CCNA and CCNP aren't certificates your average joe will be able to obtain.

They will cover all costs as long as it can be applied to a position within the company. We have 3 buildings with roughly 600 employees, and only one of the I.T. guys is Cisco certified. As you could imagine he is the top paid, but he does have around 20 years experience to go along with it.

Take full advantage.. I don't know your position, but if you can do mole work for your IT guy, move up to configuring switches and routers, you'll make quick work of the cisco courses.

I was involved in networking before it was cool *inserthipstermeme (making cables, running lines, hooking up switches and routers - grunt work).. did CCNA in school since it was free (minus exam cost), but didn't pursue it further (not my passion).
I feel like I wasted my money on CCNA course and cert. The only thing challenging in the course was scoring high 90s. The knowledge you obtain from it can be learned for free. If you do it for career progression and you're passionate about the career.. do it. If not, save your money (same goes for MBA, but that's another discussion). You're not going to learn the mysteries of life from it.. you're going to obtain a piece of paper that says you're not an idiot (not necessarily proven).

I had a buddy take the exam 6 times before he passed.. he's not dumb. It's not difficult, just rigorous. Have a good attitude and make sure your company puts in writing that they will pay for it. Take the section exams over and over.. you can find old ones online too. You want to be proficient at their exams to be sure you'll pass the first go around.
CCNA didn't bore me.. it was fun. I had some experience, so some sections were real cruise.. I just didn't want to sync blackberry's and deal with other people's bullshit or dumbasses for the rest of my life. Creating a network is fun, maintaining it and smelling people's funky feet as you crawl under their desk to put in a new line is not.. A buddy of mine said he was bombed in the face once.

First section exam I took.. I didn't expect it to be real challenging, because the coursework and material was pretty easy.. scored a 76. I took it serious from then on.. the exams are tough to make top marks.
