So, I had a dream the other day about some custom 3g TL tails on my car. All I remember is that they looked SICK NASTY, and I woke up wanting them so I did a quick sketch on a business card and forgot about it until an hour ago.

Took the initial idea to multiple concepts and here is what I came up with:

The sad part is, I have no idea how I would go about this concept.. Could anyone give me suggestions/recommendations/requests? ANY help will be very much appreciated

 

lol it says "TL" so far i like your first one and thrid one as a second choice

 

I like the third one as well, but the tl one is pretty cool just not sure if I'd want that for daily driver.

 

the first or third one looks good. the one that says "TL" reminds me of a mustang taillight..

Good question! If I did do em, probably backwards, keeping the symmetry.
I do like the 3rd the most as well.

They all scream "I just put cheap white vinyl over my tail lights".

 

If it were up to me, I would choose none of them. But it's not up to me lol.

Why don't you get the bezels painted WDP instead of going all 'sick nasty' on the tails?

 

I thought about doing that but decided not to. I think only one member pulled the trigger on doing that; deathmetal.



I decided to get a set of 07-08 Base tails and painted everything black but leaving the LED area clear...

Just to get the confusion out of the way, I do not want to get vinyls over the oem tails to get this look (that is disgusting lol). However, I would potentially want to build a brand new housing for a brand new set of bulbs or w/e necessary to accommodate my design. I came across deathmetal's thread on some custom 2g TL tails.

While your designs look cool, all of the white areas you've added cover up the LED areas.

You're going to have to build, solder, and custom mount LED boards around the white areas.

 

Exactly I initially got the idea after admiring your tails as well as DM's.

I do have some experience in manufacturing plastic housings, however my soldering skills are and clueless with custom boards.. So for now, I was thinking about purchasing a depo tail to check out the internals for measurements and fittings. *quick question: are the depo tails identical to the 07-08 tails?

I just wish DM was back to answer bajillions of questions..

 

dont mean to hijack this thread. But is it possible to have the reflector lighted up?

 

My current tails are DEPO. I bought them off of eBay and cut them open.

Some people question the quality but I didn't notice a difference.

I have no idea what the internals of the tails consists of, gotta wait til this weekend to order some depo tails to experiment + measure.

Yes, industrial design. We sketch stuff, cad stuff, sand stuff, and paint stuff all day.. now that I finally have a car to mod, im super excited!

btw ive seen a couple of your pshop skills and boy they look real! Great progress thread too; I'm reading it as I am typing this, and your DIY's look very easy to follow.

that sketch u did looks great the way it is like a stretched backwards "C". i think if you can make your tail lights look like that it would be amazing. i told you before that i liked option 1 and 3 but so far they remind me of those new mercedes (S-class?) tailights not too big a fan of that "style"

you should make a full drawing of the TL and send me a copy! drawing skills are amazing

Ah yes the S-class tails, I do know what you mean. Don't think they would look well on the TL, because I just noticed the TL tails have a slight angle on them which makes them look smaller than they are from a direct rear view. Those subtle "C"s would look

About the drawing, I'll work something out

These tails are so damn hot. I cant wait to get the extra money saved up to get this done. I have to have it on my WDP, no idea why, but i must have it.

I'm also doing this mod but going with a different style. I was about to purchase the tails light and the tl DEPO tails lights to experiment but then i got a notice in the mail about the PS Vita so the tail lights project will have to wait LOL

^^^ Its an 07-08 Base tail light....you have to cut it open and (he - Tyler) painted it black....

i would honestly jump on these tails the minute Tyler sells em (that is if he does)....
