Wow and I thought I was doing good when I got this on a recent out of state trip.

It could have been better if I slowed down to 65 (I was averaging 80MPH) and didn't have luggage in the car. Also, that 20 minute wait at the drive-through didn't help the numbers. I made sure I reset the MID when leaving my house so I could get the brief city traffic and not skew the numbers for all highway. All in all, I think the car did pretty well.

I get 23-25 average, and never more than that. I can get 35mpg on the highway directly after a fill-up, but the first red light I hit tanks it.

And +1 to the MID being accurate. Corresponds with Gas Cubby perfectly. 24mpg on the nose since I bought the car, with about $700 spent on gas the first 75 days. Ouch.

I only get 13-14mpg with 100% city driving but that's with wider than stock tires, lots of idle time, and the computer pulling timing due to detonation in the summer. I've gotten 17+ in pure city with higher octane and less idle time.

You've got to balance it out in an auto TL. Accelerate too easy and much of your gas is wasted in heat in torque convertor slippage. The extreme example of this is sitting at a redlight in gear. 100% slip and some heat being produced. The TC gets more efficient with rpms and to a degree throttle.

It's funny that IHC is recommending riding your car hard to get better mileage---it goes against everything we have been told. But he seems to be right!

In addition, I recommend using slightly overinflated tires (I run 38f/35r cold psi), seafoam your car regularly, premium gas only, cruise control as much as possible, no A/C and windows mostly up (Luckily our summer here in the NE has been mild and I can get away with this).

There is a thread about "Putting the TL on a diet" that deals with ultra-extreme weight reduction and mileage that may give you a few ideas. Lots of guys remove their spare tire & jack to save another 50lbs. I'm of the opinion that weight reduction offers the least "bang for the buck" when it comes to mileage, but there are many other reasons to reduce your weight.

Well not too hard lol. There's a fine balance.

Weight reduction is one of the best things you can do for city mpg. It won't help as much with freeway driving.

Huh? My MID has always been within right on or within 0.3 of manual calculations.

Regarding fuel logging programs... I've used excel and my own charts for the longest time. I've recently switched to Fuelly, and I'm logging my mileage/consumption on there. Right now I'm getting around 30mpg mixed city and highway driving... filled up last Tuesday and I've just been driving back and forth to work. My average is between 27-28 mixed driving... The TL's low CD, and high final gear makes for a low sipping, great cruising car.

If we got some 3rd Gen's to sign up on Fuelly, and actually use it I think the results may surprise a lot of people.

All TL's (1st, 2nd 3rd and now 1 4G)

My TL

wow, I don't ever think I got 35 in mine on the highway, most I remember is 32 or 33. In the city I'm only averaging 20.

I'm a new Type S owner and have been wondering the same thing....Trying to figure out how many miles I can get on a full tank. I drive approx 50 miles round trip to work and it seems the gas gauge drops quick from full to 3/4 full....Seems the best i've seen on my car was 26 mpg. Avg is 22. Can you guys post how many miles you think you get on a full tank on your car? I'm real qurious about Type S owners' stats....

Thanks!

you cant really trust that display. Best to calculate MPG the old fashioned way. Miles driven divided by # of a gallons per tank.

Based on what?

Explain how the old way is more accurate when the computer knows the exact amount of fuel being injected and the exact number of miles being driven.

After enough fillups to get a decent average, it's a wash, but the MID is extremely accurate.

He is 100% correct. When you fill up the tank, you can not get the same amount in that you did the last time you filled up! Unless you tap off to the fuel neck. Which is not suggested, but is the only way to guarantee that you filled to the same point you did the previous time. This is not your 80s Chevette, it knows how much fuel is being used and does a great job calculating it. I did manual tracking when I first got the car to verify the MID, once it was determined that it is accurate, I quite, as it was a waste of time.
