2008 TL tints
I just got my TL windows tinted at 20% and I am seriously disappointed with the results! I do have a couple of questions for you before I head over to this new tint shop I tried.
- 08 TL with beige interior & 20% tint all around - the two front windows look as if they are hardly tinted in the sun, while my 2 back windows look as though they have 5%! Does anyone know why it looks so terrible? Is it because of the windshield?
- My back window does not have the break cut out as I did not want it.. It looked good for the first day but today I noticed it kind of separating.. Does that mean it's a bad tint job?
- Last question, if I wanted to make the front darker would it be okay to do another layer on top of the 20%? I got a quote for $350 to peel and retint.. that's a little too much especially since I just paid almost $200 to tint 2 days ago!

edit: front looks lighter because there is light entering from the windshield. if you want to have the same look in the front then the windshield will need 20% tint. i would strongly advise against tinting the windshield 20%

So what if I get 35% on top of the 20? I really don't want to do the windshield so I agree with you on that! I will go but my Honda Pilot is the same back and front so I was wondering why it looks different on TL
This is like Tanorexia, where people keep tanning because they think they're pale, when in reality they look like a prime candidate for frequent melanoma screenings. 20% is more than dark enough. You put 35% on top of that, you won't be able to see squat at night, especially in the rain.
BTW, tint is singular, not plural.

My tint shop removed the 3rd brake light and tinted the whole window, looks very clean but I did go to a highly recommended 5 star shop here. I have 20% as well and it is pretty dark except when the sun is fully out coming through the windshield. At night when I back up, I have to open the windows a few inches.

Around here a lot of people do tint on tint, it's very common, it just cancels out the warranty.. people get 5% on 5% but that's entirely too dark.. 35 on 20 would be around 10% or less.. I have 15% on my Honda but went to a different shop as that one has relocated to FL.. This shop didn't offer 15. But I guess it'll do for now..
My TL had whole rear window tinted the PITA I had was reflection of 3rd brake light against tint and back into cabin, very poor visibility at night. The separation you see is due to the dopplar on the rear window from the factory, it ahppens.
Never in my life have I ever heard of tint on tint and ive been having cars tinted for a very long time...learn something new every day it seems. I would be concerned about adhesion but what do I know Im not a tinter. Since youd void the warranty on initial job I'd live with initial job for a while maybe into the summer to make sure its good then double up. Just make sure your math is right and the resulting tint wont make you Johhny Law bait. Not sure where your located but dark tint is a bat call to the 5-0 in the VA.

Yeah I don't think I'm gonna do tint on tint.. I'll give it some time and have a shop in Philly peel and retint.. And no clue how they see, I can hardly see at night in the Honda at 15 and I have to roll to window down to park.. Beats me, maybe they don't drive at night! My neighbor has 5% all over, front windshield included, crazy..
Here in NJ no tint can be applied to the front windows so either way it's illegal.. I know you can't tint behind the 3rd break light but I don't like the cut out..

Looks like all your questions can be answered by the shop that did the job for you. There has to be some type of warranty. Go get it fixed and let us know if you went tints on tints.
Only window tint I won't remove on my own is rear windshield. Removing tint is so simple, not worth it to pay someone. Soapy water and a razor blade are your friends.
Agree with others, don't double up on tint.

Everything you are experiencing with your tint is normal. I have 20% on mine all the way around except windshield and on some days depending on the sun angle the front looks a bit lighter because of the light shining through the windshield. The part around the third brake light is also normal because the tint cant really stick well because of the raised dots. I have had my tint on for a few years now and it still looks like the day it was done. I wouldnt try and put tint ovwer tint as your going to run into issues later I would assume.
