2008 Acura TL Type S information
Thinking of buying a 07-08 TL Type S.
1. Does anyone know the difference from the 07-08 model?
2. Timing belt or Chain?
3. Hows the gas consumption for daily commuter, mostly highway.
I'm coming from a 2006 Acura TSX 6 speed. Probably going to a automatic TL.

^he's had issues, but what car doesnt.
the main thing to point out is that these cars will generally last for a long time, if properly maintained.
As mentioned, it has a timing belt, which doesnt need to be replaced til 105k miles.
I would go for the TL-S 6MT!!!

Sharksbreath pretty much summed it up. I have had both automatic and manual Type S's and both years. No differences as mentioned, however there is a measureable difference in fuel economy. My 6spd manual averages about 25.6mpg all far suburban miles (zero highway), and will do about 31ish highway. So the manual is very good on fuel the auto will average 22ish and maybe 30 hwy with same driving situations as above for the manual. Both are great cars but the other benefit to the manual is that it is quicker than the automatic. I have never seen a actual race between the two but from what I read the manual will walk away from the auto given an excellent driver. If that means anything to you. Down side to the manual is good luck finding one. Very hard to come by and like many people on this forum you might have to travel to get the right one.

Manual is nice since my current TSX is manual, hard to go back to auto. You guys are right, I've looked around and found only auto's.
I'm having seconds thoughts now that you guys are mentioning to go for a manual. Don't know if I should give up my TSX.

-dead battery (to be expected, OEM acura batteries are the suck.)
-replace window wiper motor under warranty (common issue)
-gas cap message (notorious message on 07-08 tl-s models...will be fixed under warranty)
that's it. all minor crap that a lot of other owners have had issues with as well. the tl-s (whether it be manual or automatic) is a fantastic car. i plan on running mine to the ground.
you won't regret your purchase.

SharksBreath: Ohh man, dead battery is notorious here in Arizona. The heat is a battery killer.
The car i'm currently looking at is a Pearl White Type S. 66k miles. he's asking 23G's for the bad boy. What you guys think? Ohh it's an auto.

warranty?
i got my 07 tl-s w/ 35k for $24k out the door AND 100k warranty.
i think you have some room to haggle here. you also have time on your side, it's the end of the month right now and car salesmen love to close out deals at the end of the month.
go to the dealer/whoever tomorrow and make an offer if you're truly interested in the vehicle. make sure you test drive it and have it checked out tho. check for matching VIN numbers on all the body parts/carfax/etc.

Like they are saying dont jump into a car until you know exactly what you want. Nothing would suck more than buying an auto then realizing you truely wanted the 6mt a week later. Yes the 6mt's are hard to find but if you wait long enough one will pop up. Or if you want one quickly just buy a one way plane ticket and fly and get one. I did that twice lol. Actually make that three times because I bought my Z06 out of state as well. Im just saying its an option depending on how badly you want one right now. Funny thing is I still browse auto trader and a clean 6mt still has not popped up here in the Chicago area for the last 3 months.

I'm new to the forum, and contemplating a buying a preowned TL as well (also considering BMW 3, Infiniti G, Mercedes C). Having read this thread and the discussion emphasizing Type-S 6MT, I went looking for one (and thought I should piggyback this thread rather than start a new one).
Indeed they are not so easy to find, but I found one (only one) at a relatively close Acura dealer (amongst myriad autos): A 2007 TL Type-S Manual, 27,231 Miles, listed on the Inet at $24,595.
So a couple of questions:
1) Why are the Type-S Manuals so hot compared with other TLs?
2) Does $24.5 for an 07-S-Manual w/27K miles sound like a good deal?
3) Not sure if it's certified. Should I care (much)?
4) What should I look for if I go test-drive it?
(And I'm quite sure at this point that there's no diff between an 07 or an 08. The other Acuras I've looked at thus far have been '08 automatics, not type-S mostly, similar mileage and price ballpark.)
Thanks for any feedback.

I paid 25k for mine with 25,000 miles and flew 2000 miles to get it in June.
Get the 6mt. Its worth it twice. Don't get something til your sure and I searched and looked at TL's for about a month or so until I found the right one. I wanted a WDP with black interior and didn't find one with low miles until after I already bought mine.

2. I bought my 2006 6MT base TL for $23k otd Feb. 10. I should have waited a year and bought the type-s 6MT. $24k with that low miles sound good as fuck!!! i would buy, depending on what a Pre-Purchase-Inspection looked like.
3. Certified murderfied. These cars last a long time. if you do all the work your self, you wont need the dealer. but if you dont have the knowledge or the time, the CPO would be the way to go.
4. Clutch. a properly driven clutch can last the lifetime of the car. some one who didnt know how to operate the clutch would destroy it in a few thousand miles. the TL's clutch is tricky.
Make sure the TL has been maintained, with service records. This is usually recorded in the owners handbook, or the dealer might have your records.
changing oil is important.
Check the car fax, although not everything is reported. Check the body, there should be matching VINS on all major parts.
If you're not mechanically inclined, take it to an independent mechanic.

Wow at all the Auto Hate in here!!
I went AUTO because I like to be able to drive casually, and the manumatic mode offers me a taste of manual when I desire.
6MT is just not for me, but I understand why people would like it...for a non-daily driver I would definitely go manual.

I'll gladly take the "inconvenience" of rowing my own gears, and save the 2 grand when the transmission decides to do it's own grenade impersonation...
To those who complain about traffic, just let a gap develop to the car in front of you, and then slowly creep forward so that you don't have to do the constant start/stop bullshit that is rush hour traffic driving.
