2006 TL - when should I perform maintenance?

Hey all,

So I'm approaching 50k miles for my 2006 Acura TL (5AT with nav)

I am sure there must be something that should be checked/changed soon but am not sure exactly what services I should be getting.

So far... I know that I'll be getting an oil/filter change with synthetic oil (~$65) and i'll replace the interior air cabin filter myself. (will be searching on the forms for where to buy this replacement)

But I'm wondering if I should be looking at the other fluids (brake, tranny, power steering, etc) and get them drained and replaced (not flushed). Anything else I'm missing?

This car has been running great and I am looking to be with this car for quite some time and want to treat it nicely so it'll treat me nicely :-D.

Basically, I rather get everyone's advice here rather than going to a mechanic for the info who may or may not give me the best service/price.

and while i'm talking about maintenance...

I also bought a 4 year warranty on the car when I purchased it from the dealer (wasn't a pre-certified car). now that i think about it, I probably should have done more research on this, can anyone tell me exactly what this will cover? will it cover the annoying creaky sounds that I sometimes hear from the door panels, etc?

thanks for reading.

Have your brake fluid bled.

Also, change you tranny fluid out (drain & fill 3x). At 60k, do it again 1x.

Engine air filter can be replaced as well.

If you really want to keep up maintenance, run Seafoam through your car, and change out the spark plugs.

Replace tranny fluid if you haven't yet. Brake fluid needs to be replaced at 4 years of age, then once every year, regardless of mileage.

I don't think power steering fluid needs to be changed at this point but I am not too sure about that. Same with coolant.

Also you mentioned you're replacing the cabin air filter, but didn't mention the engine air filter. That needs to be replaced every 10-20k miles depending on how dirty it gets.

hey princely, why do you change the transmission fluid 3x?

@ babnik, i thought that an oil filter change was always included with an oil change but i guess not, that is on my list too.

anybody do anything else to keep their car running smoothly?

If it's never been changed, you need to do it 3x to get ALL of the fluid out. This isn't just 3x back-to-back, but you change the fluid 1x, drive going through all of the gears, and do it the same way 2x more. Doing it this way enables you to get the fluid that needs to be circulated throughout the transmission, and not just what drains out when you first undo the tranny drain plug.

After this, changing it once every 10k is a good maintenance habit. The Acura tranny fluid isn't the most durable.

You should definately look into obtaining the owners/maintenance manual that should have come with the car. I don't know whether you bought new or not, but either way you need them. In addition to the general maintenance schedules, you will be able to record what is done and when, which may help your resale value. You should tailor your maintenance to the type of driving conditions that you encounter (ex. dusty conditions require more frequent air/cabin filter changes)

In addition to maintenance, the manuals will provide you with a great amount of information about all the features on your TL, so you can gather the most enjoyment from it.

Good luck!

I actually agree with most of that list.

The only thing I would change is the brakes because they differ so greatly between the Brembos and base brakes. My 5at brakes were at 86,000 miles on the original pads and had tons of pad left when I upgraded while the brembos seem to be done at 15-20,000 miles.

the car actually came with the manuals. it says i should wait for my maintenance indicator light, but I don't have a full maintenance record for the car so I rather think that the car hasn't been regularly changed and i'll be starting now.

@ swoosh, thanks for your list, it'll be a really helpful reference guide, those numbers look good to me.

@ princely, i plan to take the car to a shop to get the tranny fluid changed since i can't think of a way to lift up my car where I can get underneath to drain the fluids. well that is...unless you have any tips on what you do:-D

i rather not use the stock jack since it was probably meant more for changing your tire when you get a flat and not for going under your car. how do you go about changing your tranny fluid?

The manual lists the recommended intervals for service, if you don't want to depend on the indicators.
Since you have a nav., the manual just for it is invaluable.

Just a thought, maybe the previous owner had the work done at the dealership? If so, they have a permanent of all work performed thus far.
