2005 TL w/Nav 60k - $16,900 - yeah or nay?
I've looked at a few of these .. drove 3 today .. some have that rough idle and shakey ride .. but this one may be a keeper. The only thing I see is a small dent in the right fender.
The dealer also buffed out a long scratch across the passenger side (I only noticed it because it was raining and the light hit it just right). I stopped by later and couldn't even make it out. Interior is immaculate, smoke free, comfy as hell. I'm ready to offer $16,000 and tell him to round off everything (insurance running, tax...) to hit that number. It'll also be a cash deal.
60,000 seems like a lot of miles .. but my CL just lost the original tranny at 170,000, so I'm very impressed with Acura's build. I'm giving the CL to my kid ..
So , should I get this thing or what?

kbb checks this vehicle in at $20,000 .. so $16,900 is pretty good. I'm not as worried about getting a good price as opposed to buying a lemon. They offer a 60 day warranty at the dealer (non-Acura) .. so I definitely want some extra peace of mind
as far as Extended Warranties go, if you guys want to throw me some suggestions, I'm all ears!

Do NOT get one of those crappy after-market warranties. This is a HONDA and they are DESIGNED to run 150K miles without any problems. Why pay for something you don't have too? You are talking about a $16K car which is depreciating at about $2K/year from here forward. Most repairs on these aren't any more than $500 anyway so why (on earth) would any intelligent person pay $1,600 for INSURANCE. It's like placing a bet that something will happen. The insurance companies KNOW the odds and THEY will be the only ones that come out ahead when people buy insurance...ah, er, warranties.

Good price if the vehicle is in good condition. Take a look at the Carfax report, and the extended warranty can be had at a reasonable cost. The warranty for our TL was $850 for the Acura extended warranty and at least its mind settling having the warranty, especially with all the electronics and Nav system.
The extended warranty is the same as any insurance policy, in that the company doesn't think you will need the policy, and you believe at some point you will. There is one policy that is guaranteed that the insurance company will need to pay......A Life Insurance policy.

thanks for the advice .. I'm going back and forth on this one. After checking out the 2005 today, I noticed that it had a real bad buff job on the passenger's side, like they were try to cover up a really bad scrape. I don't trust these small time dudes .. you just don't know where these cars are coming from.
so
I think I may pay a little more and go through a dealership. Prime Acura bought out Clair Acura and I have had very good luck with them in the past (I bought my 97 CL through them). Certified may be the best option. I missed out on a 2006 w/Nav with 25,000 miles and Certified for $19,900.
This forum is great, I can answer my own questions and not feel like a total tool .. hehe

It sounds like a pretty good price. Do yourself a favor and if you are really intent on buying this car take it to an Acura dealer and have them do an inspection on it...It will cost you a little money but you will have someone checking things you may have over looked or didn't know about. Just my .02

I just may do that .. the dealer is a small time double lot, but he offers extended warranties. I've heard some horror stories about these, so I'm hesitant .. but I'll browse the forums to get some ideas. My main concern is the powertrain .. but electrical worries me as well.

NEVER EVER BUY THE CRAP WARRANTIES OFFERED BY LEMON LOTS!! - trust from experience they sell these plans that have the lowest price with the highest margin.. especially stay away from C.A.R.S. (Protection Plus, Inc.).. I wouldn't buy from a lemon lot.. instead look for a private seller who has a full mechanical history.
If you get a warranty, ask your bank / fcu and call Acura and ask them who they use.
I recommend Fidelity.Check them out online and look at the consumer reviews and complaints. My local Acura dealership uses them. Just make sure you get all the required maintenance on the car and keep a record.. be prepared to fight the auditors as well because even the good ones try to cut costs.. the best weapon is the knowledge on these forums.
Make sure the warranty company pays full labor /hr cost and make sure they pay the bill and not you - many companies have you pay the bill and they reimburse you.. that's when they string you up and put the responsibility on you to fight them in civil court. Well that's my 2cw..

...btw.. when I bought my TL I purchased an ext. warranty (2yrs bumper 2 bumper) and I had a 3mos powertrain warranty from the dealer... both of those fell through when the ext. warranty companies "claimed" to have not received the paperwork from the dealer.. that did me a lot of good when the tranny went out the same week.. I fought for over a month to get money back on the deal.. I did but less than $2k on a $3.5k bill.. plus I paid another $200 to redo all the brakes where Acura wanted another $1k to do it.. (seriously).. if I have engine or a/c problems.. forget about it.. get a good warranty.. it's peace of mind

As far as a private seller, I was actually considering that today.
So off to the forums I'll go .. I have a contact at Prime Acura who is looking around for me. I'll definitely pay extra for peace of mind .. Thanks and hopefully I'll join you guys in the "ownership" part of this forum soon!

thanks man ,, I needed a good slap back to reality here .. I know the car seems straight, but I have a bad feeling about the lemon lot deals and extended warranties.

You can find an 04/05 MT for around $14-15k with low miles.
Post pics when you find what you've been looking for!

It's a GREAT deal if it has everything you want in a TL. I found many great deals when I was looking, but they all lacked a lil bit of something when buying a used car. I think I paid a lil more for mine, but it had the navi, black over dark interior that I was seeking--and it ran beauitflly. G luck!

It really depends on the condition, miles, and your area. They are starting to get pretty cheap.
I just picked up an 04 6 spd, 64K, A-Spec for $13,400. It was missing the side skirts and rear, but has the Brembos so no bid deal. Plus for the price it was a sweet deal.

Yeah, that makes sense. But, for the deal you got I might be able to pick one up for less than $20,000.
