You are not going to get any clear answers here and of course almost all of us are going to be biased towards the TL. Reliability is a toss up, both cars have good reps with that. The Maxima may be slightly cheaper to mantain just because it is just a Nissan, not an Infiniti. Acura is a luxury marque, you are going to pay slightly more for everything.

That being said you are really comparing apples with oranges here. I know the cars are both in similar size categories but there is NO contest here. I just got my cousin a 2007 Maxima SE last week. Decent car for his budget, but it is NO Acura!! Definitely feels 1000x cheaper. The TL hands down is the better car in ALL aspects.

as far as speed.... i eat maxima's for lunch and my TL is straight stock... but i think it really depends on the driver because the cars are too similar when it comes to speed and engine size.

I was debating the same thing before I got my TL in September.
Maxima SE 08 vs TL-08 vs TSX 09

I obviously chose the TL.

If anyone tells you otherwise, its not true, the Maxima's are hot cars, and have been around for longer than TL's.
The TL is more luxurious though, with slightly more horsepower, mind you the TL uses slightly more gas too.

The maximas come equipped with alot of bells and whistles just like the TL.

But I think the TL has a better "Honda" reliability, and great Acura constumer service which you dont get with Nissan.

The way I would compare the two cars are to see what you are getting in each car, appearence, compare maitenance costs (Acura is more), and overall price tags.

then make your call.

If your talking about the new maxima, it's faster then all acura's except nsx, and TL-S 6Spd. And about as fast the TL-base 6spd. It looks 10x better then the new 2009 Acura TL, the interior actaully looks good, this year for the new model. The acura's will have cheaper price for fixing it up. Acura does some what have better reliability, but nissian is improving much. So rly if your getting a Automatic TL, they are not that fast, go for an MAX. If u want a Manual, go for the TL, their 6spd are rly smooth, and fast.

One of my neighbor just bought a Maxima. I think it is a decent car but it doesn't compare to my TL...way nicer from front to back and interior.

Actually the TL gets better mpg than the Maxima. I was reading a "how much mpg you gettign" type of thread on one of the nissan forums and the maxi's fuel economy is terrible.

Actually I have found service at my local Acura dealership to be about equal in price as the Pontiac dealership I used to go to for my last car. If you finding your dealership too expensive, perhaps call other acura dealerships to see if you can find a cheaper one?

A 2005 Maxima is still a good car. 260 hp is still very fast and it is loaded with luxury features (though not quite as much as the TL). I went with the TL because when I sat in one I knew I had to have it (best interior of any car except maybe the 09 Cadillac CTS-V) but the Maxima is definitely not a bad buy. It also tends to be quite a bit cheaper than a TL for the same year/mileage.

TL 08 = 11.6liters/100km
Maxima 07 = 11.1 liters/100km

the Maxima is a gas pig, true. I would also argue the TL is a bigger gas pig, especially if you are Vtec-ing

Not sure how they got those numbers, my mid shows 9L/100 in mixed city/highway driving. If I reset it before going on the highway it shows 7 and I drive pretty fast. That's like 33 mpg.

Before the TL I had a 95 supercharged maxima. It was def worked and moved. It was a very low 13's car with streets and 12.9 with DR's. Daily driven with 128k on the clock. I'm still very active in the maxima community and can tell you what the car can truely compair to our TL.

the 5.5 Gen maxima (2002-2003 W/3.5L) Would be the best comparision to match up with our 3GTL. Considering same drivers and all stock cars the maxima from a dig would beat the 3GTL. From a roll it would be close.. Nissan's down fall to that car was the fact the interior is really cheap and suspension with that "Dead beam" really blows.

Things only got worse in 2004-06. The maxima had a bit more power but was heavier. When they came out with the CVT forget it.. worse idea ever! The 07 maxima def was a better upgrade from the 04-06. They did a better job on the body overall. The interior has more features that our TL's. Heated steering wheel and rear heated seats as starters. It comes with a better looking quad exhaust design than the 04-06 models. Down fall was that damn CVT. The car feels strange...

Now the most current maxima they almost nailed everything except for 2 important things on the "Sports" model.. There is no manual trans and no brembo brakes. I love the pano roof and the center console that goes to the back seats. This luxury option EXCEPT pano roof is also featured in the SL models of the 04-07 maximas. Something again that the TL doesn't feature.

Now when you price them both out the maxima can be more expensive. Acura has less problems and better fit and finish. The one main thing that honda lacks... and seriously does is that the VQ series engine from nissan is godly! 4 cam timing chain engine! VQ's can take a heavy amount of mods before blowing a rod. The TL would be complete if they offered a PANO roof and the center console to go all the way back. You get best of both worlds. Performance/luxury.

Now I don't know how the 3.5 Type-S mpg is like but I for starters can tell you that nissans 3.5 is a pig. Damn thing should be attached to a gas station at all times lol. My parents 03 pathfinder LE with the 3.5 VQ engine gets about 12-15 mpg. You can see the needle say "$$$$$$$$$" Basically..

Overall the 05 maxima isn't the best of choices. If I had to pick it would be the 09 maxima over the 3GTL. (Only if you get the sport version) And of coarse you don't care much about brembos and manual. Just food for thought.

I gave up an 03 Maxima with 6MT for my 05 TL with 6MT. It was an ok car but it gave me WAY too many problems for the low mileage it had. I would still have it if it was not for that. Having owned both, the TL is hands down the better car to me.

I agree the 5.5 gen Nissan hit it on the nose with the Max, but disagree with the interior. The 5.5 gen of all recent Maximas had the best looking and not so bad interior quality (especially the GLE) and it was never criticized for that. That would be the cost cutting 95-99 (bankrupt era) and 04-08 (ugly style and not so good quality) that were hit with that issue. 85-88's, 89-94's, 00-03's and the 09 Max had/have good interiors.

Yeah, the interior was not bad at all on the car and that VQ engine was nice. I hate to say it but it was a lot quicker than my TL but straight line acceleration is not everything. If it was, people would be driving around in drag cars all the time. I tried to throw that car into a curve and I literary saw my life flash before my eyes compared to my TL and it was all due to that solid axle in the rear. The suspension bobbed and weaved in that car so much, I swore I was in a '76 Cadillac on most days.

A fully loaded TL and a Fully loaded Max??.........The TL is not even in the same price range as a Max,09 TL with all the bells and whistles cost almost 45 grand?? a Max 35 grand, dollar for dollar a TSX is comparison to a Max,but I guess to each it's own??
As far as performance, I've eaten many Max's!
