Which 2005 TL to Buy

Hi everyone. I am thinking about trading in my 2002 TLS for an 2005 TL. I went to the dealer today and saw two '05 TLs, both certified preowned, gray on black with nav. They are the same price, about $29,000

Car 1 has 20,000 miles. It is very clean, except it has a sizeable dent on the passenger sider rear flare. It is about four inches in length and maybe a half inch in. The paint is still good there.

Car 2 has 30,000 miles. It too is very clean, except the passenger side rims have some curb rash, and there is a small crack in the rear bumer. The crack is like a half circle, but is only about 1 cm long.

At first, I thought the second car was a better buy, because it doesn't have the dent. But now I am thinking I could probably get it fixed with paintless dent removal. I don't know. Which one do you think is the better buy?

I say that it all depends on what they give you for the trade in value of your 2002 TLs. They could lowball you on that which essentially results in you paying a higher cost for the 05 TL. By the way, '06 TLs could be had new in some places for a little over 30k. Given your situation, I'd think twice about what other options are available...

$29,000 wow.. isn't that price a bit steep? Or do TL's hold their value that well?
+1 for TLTrance's suggestion

Yeah, $29,000 was their asking price. I haggled it down to somewhere between $27,000 to $28,000. It is still a little high, but I think fair.

The trade in value is the same for both cases, about $10,000. My car has over 100,000 miles and some scratches from parking outside all the time.

I don't know. I think both car 1 and car 2 are fair deals.

seems like a rip to me, 29 for a 05 seems high, especially because they both have cosmetic damage, maybe if you can negociate in the repairs it might sweeten the pot.

Personally, I would try to look for other cars (private seller maybe). I thought the advantage of certified preowned is not having to repair something after you've purchased it.

If they're certified used Acura's, the dealer thinks they can get more because an Acura mechanic went over the car and made sure it was operating to spec.

BS.

At the end of the day, it's still a used car.

Haggle, haggle, haggle.

And #1 is probably the better choice. Lower miles and minor damage.

For $29k you can haggle a new 06' or 07' non nav for that price, i only paid $35k for my 07TLS. Look into a new one and see if they are willing to deal...

You are willing to pay 29k (without tax licenseing and everything) for a 20,000/30,000 miles 2005 model year TL w/ navi.

I paid 31,500k (without tax licenseing etc) for a brand new 2006 TL w/ navi w/ 4 miles.

29k is fair? I guess so.

The above post is correct too. I negotiated for a non navi at first, came down to 29,500 for a brand new 06 TL no navi.

Kelly Blue Book says a car with 30,000 miles, and in faiir condition (which is what they would seem to qualify for) is $23,600.
Dents, dings, cracked bumper all spell no better than fair.
Some dents can't be taken out by Dentwizard. This may be one of them. Didn't sound like the previous owner (s) took great care of either of them.
My worth says keep looking.

Wouldn't pricing be regional? I know I couldn't find an 05 6 speed with navi in the Southeast to save my life. Everyone I did find either had 75K miles, or they wanted 29K+! I ended up transferring one from carmax in VA, just to get the combo I wanted. I guess I was picky cause I did NOTwant tan interior. I ended up getting mine for 27K. I didn't think it was too bad, as I couldn't find a SINGLE 6 speed with navi for less than 24K, unless it was WAY over 80K miles.

That is true, region does affect pricing. Someone wrote on another thread that the 6MT accounted for less than 10% of TL sales. Don't know how factual that is. Region, may again, affect availablity.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Seems high to me. Also, if you consider that Acura will likely give you a much better finance rate for a new car compared to a used car. Your monthly payment may actually be lower buying a new car.

way-acura,

Do yourself a favor and ignore all the posts here suggesting you go for a non-Nav model. Regardless of price, the best part of getting the Navi is that you won't be one of the 10's of 1000's who bought a 3G TL without it that looked back afterwards banging their heads into the wall wishing they had.

Why do you think the vast majority of used '04 & 5 TL's for sale out there on places like ebaY are non-Nav units?

Well, I finally made a purchase! From another dealer. I picked up a '05 TL with nav, gray on black, very clean, 18,000 miles, for $27,500. I figure a 2007 is about $33,000, '06 $30,000, and '05 about $27,000, so this is about right. The car is one of those used cars that looks practically new because the previous owner really took car of it.

I also paid $1,600 for the 100,000 mile, 0 deductible acura extended warranty.

The owner changed the rims to some very ghetto chromed stars that I hated. I made the dealer put on factory rims. I got the 2007 tl type s rims. I would have prefered the stars, but anything was better than the chormed out rims.

Just so you know, the other cars all had more defects with them. I almost bought car 2, but at the last minute, the dealer told me it was in an accident.

Next up, an injen CAI, ur crank pulley, and changing out the tinted windows for a lighter tint. Picks coming.
