tl1...

i think it's about damn time toyota actually put some serious hp/tq in their flagship sedans. They haven't had that much hp in a car since the twin turbo Supra back in 1998!!!

I hear that engine will also be in the new IS300 mated to a 6-spd tranny .. should make that IS300 a true BMW 3-series killer... (so long as they also upgrade that cheesy boy-racer interior).

Still don't think the Avalon compares or will compare w/ the TL b/c it's a bigger car, and the performance characteristics are going to be on par w/ a larger car... not as agile as the TL. But only time shall tell.

Shouldn't it be in the cars section?

Well here's my opinion.
I don't like the style of the new Avalon. It's too big.

Now the new IS300 with that engine mated to a 6mt I like. Isn't it gonna be called IS330 now? I can't wait for it to come out. I'm definitely going to check it out. I agree that the interior should be upgraded. That might be my next car or the fully redesigned G35 that should be out in a few years. I might even wait until the new TL comes out. 6mt with AWD?

We could talk a little bit over here. It won't hurt.

I dislike the style of Avalon. Its features and characters ain't my favorite, either.

Now that Toyota is adding so much HP/Torque in the Avalon do you think they will do the same with more of their other cars?

The styling of the Avalon reminds me of the Chevrolet Citation.

I just passed an Avalon on the highway a few minutes ago. My first thought was, "Wow, is that car ugly." If I wanted an upscale Toyota, I'd go with a Lexus instead.

If you get all the options that are standard in the TL, the price of Avalon is going to be close to $38,000. No thanks.

avalon

I looked at those, but the style is dated and the engine is the 3.0 (another dated aspect)...

The newer model (06) I think promises a much better body and 280 HP. I think the 05 has the older style and 210HP engine.

It is about time that toyota gets back to some performance oriented products...

This will give the TL owners another choice...

I think that this post begs the question...when will ACURA increase the torque on any/all of their cars (every single one is lacking until the needle edges past 4k rpm). Don't get me wrong I like VTEC, but Acura needs power in the lower RPM range. When the TL is cruising in this range it is an absolute slug!!

thats the bad part about VTEC...not going to change unless you get a SC, just punch it on the highway - no slug then!

increases in low end

Well acura had a sweet package in the 01 CL S model. The most powerfull V6 engine with the most torque (232) and it was there from 3500-5500RPMs.

The car was a tad heavier, but the maxima could not match it and the torque was not there till 4400 rpms... The maxima with the stick was around 6.7 seconds while the heavier CL was just under that with an automatic!

The tranny issues did in the model. 01, 02, 03 they first replaced the trannies and then later replaced and changed the ECU (modified the shift points).

In my 01 I could down shift at 85 into 3 and wind it up to about 110. With the rebuilt and new ECU that was a thing of the past. I know crazy idiot you are saying but you could do it!

The 04s came out and they changed the power profile of the engine.. They produce more torque and HP but they moved the max torque range to 5000! It was now higher than any other V6....!!! Even toyota has 240 ft pound of torque at 3600 in their 3.3 225 Hp motor.

The tranny in the acura made the difference.. But, now that the 3rd gen has a 5AT issue as well (oil jet), I would think acura now has to make a bullet proof tranny to be able to enter the HP and torque arena once again. Sure the latest configuration is good, but the rest are catching up and while on paper the engines produce more, the test results may not make them any better..... The 3.5 QV motor has made the 10 best list. I had no problem with my acura motor at all. It performed very well, I even bounced off the rev limiter a couple of times. I was impressed that I did not even notice it was at the 7 grand mark! Yeah 3rd gear!!! about 110. had to bury that BMW

But acura is dealing with what to do with the 5 AT. The G for 05 in the 5AT configuration puts out as much torque as the acura does in HP (and at 4800 rpm), it might not accelerate quite as fast in some models, but they out handle the acura to some point. The gearing seems lower than the acuras and the 5th gear is like the 4th in the acura 5AT. It is like they could use a 6th gear... but only for more MPG.

The 05 models have yet to have a road and track test drive, but it will be interesting to see how they compare.. The G has more ponies in the stick 298 where the torque stays at 260. I want to see how the 05 TL, 325, and G compare since last year they were in the top 3. Will it be another repeat...

Acura the fastest in the 6MT (and 3rd place) then the bmw and the G? I have not seen any noticeable differences or changes in the models other that the G added some HP. Torque is king for those of you out there looking for quick 0-60 times. Then there is the tranny.. You got to get that power to the wheels...

Now toyota is reentering the market with a 280HP avalon!?

Sorry for the length...

I think the acura had a sweet looking product. I really do. I just decided on the G this time. I gave some stuff up since I was not willing to pay 35G or more for the model with more toys, but I can do my own comparison. Isn't that what's it all about!!!

Enjoy and hopefully acura will come back with something really soon. My thought is the 50K RL is the testing ground...

Unfortunately, we don't have that option anymore. We can only move between forums in 3G, but not to forums outside of 3g, so no more moves to Cars & Bikes, Ramblings, Black Market, etc.

The only thing we can do now is to close the thread and ask the poster to repost in the appropriate forum. This seems to be ok here, as rets said twice, and we don't mind the discussion. Becuase of the new limitation, we will see more of these threads remaining here, which may be good or not, depending on the thread. Of course, inappropriate threads will immediately be closed, or even deleted.

If I were going to pay $33k for a Toyota Avalon.. I'd immediately be in the market for an equally ugly Lexus ES300 ... but I'd surely look to Acura/Infiniti...

Hell, i think that new G35 w/ 298 hp w/ the manual is mint... it'll do very well (as it already has)

Exclamation That's for sure!

Re: New Toyota Abalone, I mean, Avalon: "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear."

Memo to Toyota: Start with a clean piece of paper and lose the name. It will ever be associated with the last ride to the old folk's home.

Memo to Acura: Alright, already! You made your point. Now get a V8 into production with a bullet proof tranny. It'll go good with SH-AWD.

To echo what the other mods said, at the moment we can't move threads to OFF TOPIC or out of the TL forum. That will be corrected at a future time. In the meantime, we will be more tolerant of these "fringy" threads unless they get way over the top.

So, help us out during the transition by posting in the proper forum. If it's not directly related to TL, then post it in the appropriate forum, such as OFF TOPIC.

So the TL is a young persons car? I don't think so. It just is for different people.

I agree. My wife and I will both be 60 in April (can't believe it) and we both love the TL. Had a 2000 TL previously. We drove the ES330 and didn't like the soft, chusy ride. The ES330 and the Avalon are more like a Buick. My wife said all the old women in our town drive Buick LaSabres and she didn't want to be like them.

I think is boils down to whether one likes a soft ride or better handling. Anyway, we're young at heart.
