2004 TL Getting Rave Reviews on Maxima Board
TL Lovers-
The guys and gals on www.maxima.org started a thread, 2004 Maxima vs. 2004 TL.

The TL is getting great reviews. I think maybe one Maxima fan said he would prefer a 2004 Maxima over the 2004 TL. But he's probably just being stubborn.
The interior is so much nicer, the 6 speed shifts so much smoother, more power, GREAT looks...
The 2004 TL is the king of FWD sport sedans, even the Maxima guys say so...
The only reason I didn't get a 2003 TL-S when I bought my 2003 Maxima 6 speed was because I couldn't get a manual tranny in the 2003 TL-S.

As a former Y2K maxima owner, I gotta agree with the comments. The maxima, while a great car that served me well, is not in the same class as the TL. This applies to a. exterior styling, b. interior appointment, and c. handling. A powerful car and one I would get all over again at that point in my life but I can say that I don't miss the insane torque steer that came with the monster low-end torque.

That's like saying the guys in the Pinto forum prefer the Corvette for the same money. Yuch.

I was a '95 Maxima owner and wanted very much to see what they did with latest Max design but I didn't even bother to test drive it once it arrived. The interior and exterior styling was in a word...ugly. On paper it had all the options I was looking for. I especially like the thought of a heated steering wheel.
Anyone know the difference between the 04 Maxima and the 04 Altima? They look very similar and both have 3.5L engines available. I have seen the interior of the Altima and it is very similar to the interior of the G35.
AS far as the G35/TL comparison....I was absolutely sold, without question on the G......that is, until I saw, sat in, and drove the TL....after that, there was no question that TL was the way to go. The G is a fine machine, no doubt, but, IMHO, the TL looks better, both inside and out...and is a much more comfortable car in (at least) the driver's seat. I test drove several different G's...never really could find a comfortable seating position....or spot for my left leg....and I'm 5'10", so height wasn't a factor I still like the G and if, for some reason, the TL just disappeared, I would probably wander back to my local Infiniti dealer. But for right now.....excuse me, I'm gonna go take a ride in my fabulous RRP TL!

As such, a comparison between a Maxima and a TL brings the TL down to a 'mass' vehicle and not the luxury car it really is.
If I traded in my TL and drove up to my parking spot tomorrow in a Maxima, every other executive in the company would have the following thoughts:
1. Huh?
2. His wife must have left him.
3. Has he no taste?
4. What's next, a Timex?
5. Bet he buys generic catsup, too.

The new Maxima is designed to compete with the Toyota Avalon, which itself was designed to steal sales away from the Buick Century and Mercury Grand Marquis. ...not a direction I care to go in.
However, the new Maxima is alot more encompassing than the 5G Maxima in that it is a fairly well balanced blend of sport and luxury. IMO, its not an insult to compare TL with the new Maxima. (Consumer Reports considers the new Max to be in the same class as the A4, 3 Series, C-class, ES, TL and G35)
And though the MSRP for a loaded one puts it above $35G, that price can be negotiated down quite a bit. But if it makes you TL guys happier, the new 6G Maxima-based Infiniti I35 will be in showrooms this Fall.
Peace.
