Has anyone performed 20,000 mile maintenance? What services were rendered? Dealer cost?

Also, does dealer/acura maintenance schedule differ from maintenance minder system?

I don't know what services or inspection items dealers are going to give to you at 20k milestone. But lots of dealers do have their own maintenance schedule instead of following 04TL's MID reading or info.

You tell them A1, they tell you 3750/7500 miles inspection with $130 plus. Telling them B would recieve another 7500/10000 miles check list with $130 plus. We follow A/B 1/2/3/... by MID and owner manual, they follow their own system, pretty like 2G TL's.

You can't really use the term "20,000 mile maintenance", because everyone's individual driving habits, locale, etc, will determine when the MID tells you to do whatever you need to do, and this may be at 10,000 miles or at 30,000 miles, or any other figure.

The A maintenance is just an oil change and should only cost you what a regular oil change costs, plus tire rotation if they do that too. The B maintenance is virtually the same as the A, except they are supposed to check a bunch of things. These are the same things they are supposed to check when doing any oil change on any car, so there shouldn't be any additional charges for it. So, this means the A and B should be the same price, but of course, they will charge what they think they can get.

rets is right about dealers playing dumb and trying to get more money out of you. If you do your own maintenance, you will save a bunch of bucks, if you go by the MID you will spend some, but if you let the dealer screw you, I hope you're rich.

I don't think there is a question of how Acura trains their dealers, but how it lets the dealers try to snow you.

Thanks for your replies. The car is telling me A1 (oil change) - Acura dealer is telling me 100+ dollars of check this and that + the oil change.

Stay clear of the stealers....I mean dealers and you'll be just fine.

Find yourself a trustworthy mechanic and save yourself $80 or so.

$100 + for a friggen oil change? Damm, I really wanted to use the dealer for my oil changes too, oh well. Wonder what the Honda dealers charge?

I haven't had any maintenance done yet. However, if we change oil and rotate the tires ourselves then will the Acura warranty still apply?

Can Acura screw us up for not getting the maintenance done by an Acura dealer?

Will the maintenance minder light automatically go out if we do an oil change ourselves?

A=oil change, 1=rotate tires. There ain't no "this and that".

Can you do your own maintenance? Oil filter very easy to get at, costs around $7.50 at dealer, plus 5 quarts (use 4.5) of oil, around $8.00 at Walmart depending on brand,

Rotate tires also easy if you have a floor jack and stands, otherwise find out exactly what the dealer will charge for it. Be careful about who does it because there are many reports of shops scoring the wheels with the socket when they remove/install the lug nuts. Ifyou have a mechanic/shop you trust, that is your best bet.

The owner's manual specifically states that doing your own maintenance will not void the warranty.

The MID will not reset automatically, but here are the instructions:

Here’s the full procedure to reset the MID display:

1. Turn the ignition switch to ON

2. Press the < or > button repeatedly until the oil life is displayed.

3. Press and hold the Select/Reset button for 10 seconds. The Multi-Information Display will ask for a confirmation.

a. If you are sure you want to reset the display, press the Select/Reset button for 10 seconds again.

b. If you do not want to reset the display, press the < or > button to select “Cancel”

Of course not. Plus, I plan to over-maintain my car - will that void anything? Of course not. You have to eset - Ise my OBD scanning tool, bit it is in the manual.

Actually, as good as my Acura delaer is, for inspections and stuff, I go to my Honda dealer. They can do warranty repairs on Acuras. Since I do all the rest of my mainteneance, it comes down to how I am treated, loaner, etc. I only bring my car in for stuff like having the steering wheel straightened, or warranty service > $100, or requiring special tools even I do not have (and I have a lot).

I have been going to Santa Barbara HONDA for my oil changes. They cost me $23.99. The first time was great. The second time (22,000 miles) they could not get the information display to reset. Eventually they wen on line and got it, reset my display nd I was on my way. My only concern now, are they using the correct filter? I hear our cars have a tiny filter. Is it the same one as the accord V6???

Our filter fits several other Acura models, but from what I found doesn’t fit any Honda models. Here’s a link to a listing of the oil filters for Acura models.

The 2004TL oil filter part number is 15400-PLM-A02, which supersedes 15400-PLM-A01, which will also work. Check your work order; they may have written the part number on it. I don't think the part number is on the filter (probably too small to fit a long part number on the filter) but if you can get underneath the car you can take a look.

The A02 is supposed to be made by Fram, which some people don't like. If you are one of them, use the A01. You should be able to get either one at the dealer.
