1st brake job on 08 Type S?
At what point do most TypeS drivers find they need their brakes done? Is it usually just new pads, or do they go with rotors as well? Just curious as to when I should expect needing brake work.

Depends on how you drive..
I believe Acura only rates the Brembo pads at about 25k....mine were toast (barely any pad left) at 19k. Some people claimed they've lasted about 40k.. but i highly doubt that with the brembos, unless it was like 80% Highway "cruising"
You'll know when you need new pads... the "feeling" is very apparant with the brembos, when the pads are done

I had the same question too. I have an 07 TL-S with 17500 miles on it and have no clue as to when is a good time to replace my pads/rotors?
How do you know you it's time to get new brakes? and Do you have to replace both front and rear brakes? How often do rotors get replaced? I feel stupid asking all those questions LOL ugh

How does this compare with the 3rd gen regular TL brake life? Also, is that 25,000 miles for the front only, or all around? And typically, what is the cost for a front brake job (pads only) done at the dealership, and the same cost for the rear pads only? Thanks for the feedback in advance.

I just bought a 2007 Type-S with 19k miles. During the pre-purchase inspection by the Acura dealer, I was told that the front pads had 4/32nds remaining and 2/32nds was the min required to pass inspection. By comparison, the rears had like 10/32nds left. He said the stock pads alone cost $195 a set (both corners), plus labor.
I've read on this forum that there are cheaper alternatives to the oem pads and that replacing the pads are very easy and quick (there calipers are designed for that).
So can anyone recommend an inexpensive pad for the Brembos that does not create a lot of brake dust?

07 tl-s... I have 33k miles on my brakes and theyre fine. I do a lot of highway driving
But I think it's about that time to replace them. I'm getting it checked tomorrow

Changed my OE Front Pads at ~20k miles. Pads only, not rotors and did NOT get the rotors turned. They are fine this way.
When the pads got low, the metal squealer tab started making noise, the brakes felt softer and there a little bit of wobble through the pedal.
Got pads on ebay from an Acura dealer.

- i've had my brake fluid flushed twice though? every 30kish...

I am at 18k and halfway to my next oil change. I imagine I will need pads ~20k, as the fronts were at 6/32 the last time I was in for an oil change. Would I save a good deal of money getting the pads my self, and would the dealership get pissed?

My 2G has basically the same brakes as your 3G Base. I went 6 years and 65k miles in the first set of Pads/Rotors.
'07 w/Brembos? I went 20k on the first set of pads.

You don't have to change your rears everytime you change the front. The rears will last double the time of the front brakes. the front does a good majority of the stopping, the rears do not do that much. if you change your rears that much, you are throwing your money away

Not only smooth, but make sure each side is even and both sides are parallel to each other.
BUT by removing material from the rotor, they don't disapate heat as well. That means they *may* warp easier.
So do NOT get rotors resurfaced if they don't need it.

$195. is the list price for a set of front pads (Brembo)
1.5 - 2.0 hours x dealer's hourly labor rate is the labor cost to change front pads and resurface rotors. The rate in the NYC/NY area is $105-115 per hour.

Not positive bout the '04 but sounds like brembos.... Bigger calipers than base automatics, gernerally 4 pistons (two on each side of the rotor)

I have an 05 6sp, same as type-s. I had mine changed early on due to some noise (10-15k)(warrenty work). I am currently at 55k and just did a complete front end change (pads and Rotora rotors). The pads were low but still worked. I also replaced the rear rotors to match the front put kept the factory rears. They were still 80%. While I was in there I also painted the rear calipers to match the front. Did all the work myself. I do not brake hard so I managed to make the pads last quite some time. The front rotors needed to be turned if I were to continue to use them. Had a 1/16th of an inch inset for wear.
The wear is all going to depend on your driving habits.

"The "25k" is fronts only. The base 3G front brakes should last much longer, I say a minimum of 40k. For a Type-S front brake job, expect to pay ~$400 at the dealership. Pads will run you anywhere from $175-$200, depending on the dealership. The rest is labor. The rear pads are much cheaper. I don't know how much, as I haven't gotten them replaced yet. But, a general rule of thumb is to replace them every other time you get your fronts done."

There are people with 2nd and 3rd gen cars that go through brakes quickly as well and on the second gen they have a tendancy to warp rotors with repeated hard stops. Want your front brakes to last longer, learn how to stop without tearing up your pads
Brembo brakes trade wear for stopping power and that is why you gotta replace them fairly quickly on that car.....if you do not like the rate that the car eats pads, try some different ones
my previous car a 98 accord LX V6 had it's first rear brake job at 90K and the fronts were still original when I sold the car with 100K on it.

I took my TL-S to All Tire (Arcadia, CA), the store manager is like a bro to me.
He charge around US$ 160 for everything.
Ceramic Pads, rotor resurfacing, tire rotation, and refilled my wheels with Nitro.
I've already had Nitro in m wheels.

Burning Brakes
I wonder if any Type-S or 04-06 6MT owners have switched their brakes with the non-Type-S 5AT brakes? The much longer life might be worth the reduced performance for many drivers.

Speaking for myself as a 6MT owner, I would not consider trading the front calipers. I think those that buy the 6MT or the Type-s understand that brake wear is going to be much higher. That is one of the tradeoffs.

You don't need either. The pins can be driven out & in with a light hammer and a small punch, awl or Philips head screwdriver.
The easiest way to push the pucks back into their bores is to put a large flat blade screwdriver between the pad face & the disk. A little wiggle will push them home. Takes almost no pressure at all.
These are the fastest & easiest pads to change I have ever come across.
