15 years.. what happens next?
Hi all,
My trusted best friend 2008 acura tl base is nearing it's 15th birthday in a couple of years. I have had 103k miles of mostly trouble free experience so far and I'd hate to part with my friend but I must think practically. I live in IL and am not sure what the implications are of having a 15+ year old car are from a registration standpoint, emissions testing stand-pont etc. Will the value of my car plummet after it turns 15?
Looking for some inputs.
Thank you!!

very strange questions, as if you have been keeping up with the maintenance of your friend...your friend will not all of a sudden fail emissions.
if, however, you have not treated your best friend to the best of the best within your care, your friend will have failed emissions LONG ago.
have you taken a look at the value of your car? it hasnt tanked ALL of a sudden..it has gradually fell over the years.
so, this magically imaginary arbitrary 15 year number doesnt really mean a thing.
I bet, if you look around you....there are a NUMBER of cars that have aged way past the 15 year mark that are still on the road today.

I agree with @justnspace, nothing magical happens at the 15 year point. In fact, my now 15 year old 2006 TL with 170,000 miles on the clock is still humming along as well as ever; I'll probably keep the old girl an easy ten more years.

I've owned my car for 11 years now and she is a 2006. so, she is 15 years old this year.
the value of my car didnt drop at at 15, it had dropped Gradually over the years. a slow and steady decline. not a sharp, Oh shit, drop.

your best friend is perfectly capable of providing hundreds of thousands of more miles for your enjoyment. All for inexpensive maintenance charges. You do not drive much at all. The value of your car is already low which means reduced registration and insurance costs. your new friend is going to cost you a small fortune to do what? you drive 7K per year. enjoy it and drive it into the ground.

Plummet? None of these cars are worth more than 5k unless it is a type-S or if it has not been driven.. like 30,000 miles only
these days you have to watch out for those turbo 2 liters.. haha

I was looking to know if there are more stringent registration or emissions requirements in the US for a car older than 15 years which will affect its value in used car market. Doesn't look like there are any. Thank you for the inputs.

Like others said I'm willing to bet you can reach high mileage an still pass emissions an Theoretically registration price should decrease with vehicle age. At least in my state. Now I financed a 07 w/240,000ish great condition for $4500 An sold a 06 w/153000 for $4800 in excellent condition! Lol i would easily ask $5500 right now during tax season an stimulus checks!

Most state will relax the emission and registration once the car hit "classic" status because these cars most likely spending their time in storage/ more than on the road. Value in $$$ wise? any 15 years old vehicle gonna drop over the years and you wonder how well your TL did? perform a search within your area for German counter part (Audi A4, BMW 335i, Mercedes E class) and you will see where the TL stand.

Interesting enough I was looking at some 6MT TL-S' today just for fun and I saw one with the same specs and mileage selling for almost 3k more than I paid for mine; which I just bought in great condition last summer.

Living in Illinois has it's problems. I live in Oregon (also high tax). This has nothing to do with your Acura TL. I am sure there would be repairs available for anything that happens (and it will be cheaper than buying a new car).

I sure remember that purchase, I was after that car! We had a good chat buddy! Things worked out, as Marsalis knows...
2008 NBP Type S, 6 MT. Bought back in October with 118,500'ish miles for $10,500. As of today, it has 119,330 and I have NO doubt I could sell it for the same amount, actually think for more...

Age doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. It really depends how it was taken care of and the climate it was exposed to over its life. I have a 05 TL and my other car is a 25 year old Pontiac with 200k miles which still keeps chugging along, the northeast climate is going to do it in before anything.

IIRC, in IL, it was title every year and emissions every two, but you can check the Secretary of State website for a ton of info.

I will have owned my 2005 the full 16 years this July. I've never held onto a car for so many years. And over the last few years I've had a 5 miles commute, and barely driving it this past year while working from home. Sitting at 110,000 miles, garage kept from day 1 (while my daughter's 2018 Accord sits outside.) KBB says it's worth about $3-4K. But it's worth much more than that to me, as like most of you, I plan on keeping it basically forever. Has had absolutely no major mechanical issues other than an alternator and radiator, and all the normal little stuff. My biggest fear is that I'll be sitting at a light and get rear ended (I live in DC metro) and it will be instantly totaled.

Thinking back on the last few years of posts, if I recall correctly @DMZ, got his 6MT nailed but good and he was able to get the other guy's insurance company to restore his car very well. Maybe he'll pop in here and give us some more details and some photos.

I used to not be concerned by things like that but after getting rear ended, twice, both times sitting still. One at a red light the other waiting for oncoming traffic to turn into a driveway. I got lucky and the rear bulkhead on the car ate most of it so I found a replace bulkhead and replaced that. I never filed a claim because my deductible on said car is roughly half its total value. So it was cheaper for me to just take care of it myself. Worst part is now I'm always pretty nervous when a car is coming up on me at a light, just don't trust people on the road anymore, both times in my case the other driver was on their phone when they hit me.
