A-110(a): DIY Guide to replacing 3rd & 4th gear pressure switch for 3G TL (2004-2006)
#441
So I just finished with this. Like everyone else said, this was relatively easy. I think it took me a little less than 2 hours since it took me a long time to figure out how to get into the space in order to see where the switch was and how to get to it. After that it was easy.
Not sure I can tell any difference in the way it drives, maybe a little smoother shifts at low RPM.
Thanks to the OP and all others that contributed

I also just finished this replacement with a 3x3 swap of Redline fluid and it really is like a new car! Very happy with the results! Actually had a friend ride with and commented on how smooth the shifts were compared to his brand new car!

Pretty easy job when you have pics as a guide... I did a trans refill maybe 2 weeks prior to changing the switches...the little hesitation or shuttering is what i think ppl are calling it is gone but overall not a huge difference in the changing of gears- still change kind of rough. Either way, glad it's done and hopefully it can run for another 100k!

I just got mine replaced this morning at my uncle's mechanic shop and I also went in for new spark plugs. Saved me money, I just paid for the parts from my local Acura dealer who were offering discount pricing if you mentioned a Craigslist ad that they posted.
I took advantage of that so bought the pressure switches and gaskets. I noticed slightly hard shifting when moving to 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th. But it does seem a bit more responsive and I hope the spark plugs will help with my fuel economy. Lately my engine felt very bogged down so to speak(no responsive) which suffered major fuel economy for my usual commutes around town and highway.
hope the new tires, spark plugs, 3rd/4th gear pressure switches and soon a second 1x1 ATF change should make the car feel brand new again
HERE are the old switches:
HERE are the old spark plugs:
P.S> Yes, I did or my uncle actually added anti-seize onto the threads of each spark plug.

Say if your ATF hasnt been changed in 100k miles, I would spread the changes out 2-5k miles. Say if you change it out every 30k miles, then you can drain/refill, drive around the block a few times and repeat 2 more times.
Hope this helps!

Is this something I should be concerned with having an 07 type s? It seems most of the pressure sensor problems were with the 04-06 transmissions, but I am coming up on 45k and I was wondering if it would be smart to change out these sensors when I hit 50k?
I was doing a quick search as well, but what other maintenance is recommended at 50k?

I've got an 05' TL with 123k miles and prior to replacing switches and ATF, I''ve had zero transmission problems. Now that I've replaced the switches and did the 1x3 DW-1 fluid, I've noticed a shutter/vibration around 45-65mph during fairly aggressive acceleration. I went back and properly torqued the switches but other than that I'm clueless.
Anyone have problems with the shuttering after replacing the switches? I don't know if it's the fluid or the switches or the transmission... I've thought about reinstalling the old switches to see if it goes away but I dunno...

Wow, I had shuddering at 30 mph. Just did the switches tonite. So far so good. The shuddering went away...for now!? Going for my first flush probably around Columbus day weekend. To the post above, I read a few post back that they reversed the switches. Could this be the problem? Thanks for the all the help AZiners.

Ditto on the thank you stuff, I swapped mine today, car shifts super smooth, I was getting intermittant shudders between 35-40MPH, dealer said it was bad fluid, swapped it and it did nothing, all gone now. I told the tech to try that first and they said they never do them on TLs, just MDXs, so screw that never going back there again.

I made sure my switches were correct for an 05' TL. 28610-ray-003, silver switch, 3rd gear, bottom switch closest to the ground... and 28600-ray-003, brown switch, 4th gear, top switch closest to the front bumper.
I'm going to reset the ECU and maybe do a 2x3 fluid switch and also getting the tires rebalanced just to make sure all of my corners are covered...

04 TL here with 87K, and its had a shudder (especially uphill) between 3rd & 4th gears since I got the car with 18k miles. While under warranty, dealership couldn't replicate issue and said it was okay....I regret not pushing them harder on the issue.
Replaced the pressure switches on Sunday (thanks to post 194 for better pictures, it was hard to tell exactly where these switches were from the OP). I think the shudder problem is pretty much resolved, now on inclines driving 35-40 mph, it feels like it stays in 3rd gear longer, then smoothly shifts to 4th.
Next project up, replace ATF for the first time.
Still wondering if I should sell it due to this issue or if I've fixed it for good. I'd much rather get a newer TL (2008?) than have to replace a tranny. Many thanks to all of the information provided on this forum!

Just did the entire Tranny Preventive maintenance
I have 81K miles. All my screens were clean but the filter was dirty.
Replaced both pressure switches and replaced 3 quarts of fluid (1 of 3). The used fluid was dark. As time goes on, I'll complete the remainder of the fluid changes. I did notice a smoother shifting of the gears.
A big thank you to sixsixfour and all the other contributors for the great write-up.

I'm a newbie here but not to Hondas/Acuras. I purchased a 08 TL base back in March with 29k as I needed a sedan to transport clients. My former ride was a 2003 CL-S 6MT coupe. As everyone here (should know), the 04-06 TL's have different part numbers as it uses the old 3 shaft tranny design. Starting in mid 2005 Honda introduced a new 4 shaft transmission for the 2006 Ridgeline and slowly implemented the new tranny to other Honda/Acura V6 models. The 07-08 TL's use the new 4 shaft design, that's why the parts numbers and procedures are completely different.
I would like to thank AcuraZine and supporting members for these informative threads as I'm experiencing the 3rd to 4th gear shudder and slightly harsh shifts. I will soon replace the switches and perform a drain/fill soon and report back. Again, thank you.

I looked thru the first few pages, and I'm a little confuse on the part #s for the replacement switches. When I go to oemacuraparts.com, and put the part #28600-P7Z-003, the results show it's for 99-03 TL. Majofo's part # 28610-RAY-003 seems to be more accurate when I do a google search for my 04 Acura.
Can the experts clarify please?
Thank you.

Just did mine last weekend, overall seems better but in certain incline, light throttle and on 3rd gear, I can still get the stutter sometimes. I think at this point it might be issue with the Z1 fluid, I did 3x3 back at 65k miles, then again at 105k with timing belt, and now car is at 118k. Acura has phased out the Z1 for the new DW1 stuff. Will do tranny fluid change on my next oil change and report back.

I did this just a few minutes ago. Was not too difficult, but did not have a 22mm wrench, so I used an adjustable. The original pressure switches were not torque down too tight, so I managed to take them off quite easily. I could not get my torque wrench to fit, so I just tighten by feel, and made sure the tabs align to the approximate "original" position.
Thanks for the instructions!

i took it to my friends shop and took like an hour to do the switches and 1x3 red line racing atf. i do not feel the big difference in shifting, but my car now shifts @3000 rpm instead of 2500rmp, is that normal?
#476
Perhaps I've missed this, but where are you guys going to purchase the pressure switches? Do I need to go to the dealership to purchase or maybe an online venue? Thanks! Plan on doing this for my 08 TL to be safe (83k mi.)

This DIY will not work for your 08 TL. Try this one....

Good luck.

Just search part number in Google, or look at part section of your local dealer. In my case, ordering online to pick up was cheaper than walking to the parts counter at the dealer... go figure

i personally like acuraoemparts.com (they offer 25% off list and if you put "acurazine" in the comments when you check out they take another 5% off)

this happens alot .. the online oem dealers offer 25-30% off list. even paying $10 for shipping its still usually cheaper to buy parts online.
