'08 Base vs 05' RSX Type S

Okay so my brother just bought an 05 rsx type s and keeps asking me to race. I got a little drunk one night and put down a 1000 bucks that my 08 base TL could walk his rsx.. did I just lose $1000? My TL is automatic.

Is his stock? If so it'll probably be a tie. Technically you lost the bet because you won't walk him.

you're going to lose from 55 mph roll. My buddy has had 2 rsx-s cars over the past 10 years and I've raced him in my 05 base TL long ago - from a dig, the RSX is just a dog. utterly no torque. But they are rev-happy cars and they do very well between 40-90 mph. As soon as your 5AT TL hits 4th gear it's going to crap out because 4th gear in the autotragic TL is the worst gear on the planet.

Enjoy.

edit: be sure you don't have TCS on

sorry man. Base 5AT TL is just not that quick.

get a 6mt ! still not fast, but quicker for sure, comes with limited slip differential, and brembo brakes.

Get a jpipe, PnP runners and a udp. He'll never know your not stock and it'll give you a better edge. Also strip the trunk. You still won't walk him but you should have him to 100 no problem.

I would do something like that but my wife made me promise to keep the TL stock Apparently she dont like driving my 08 si since I started messing with that because its "to fast for her". Come to think of it though; she probably won't like the fact that I may have just lost 1000 bucks either

Your wife wouldn't know they are on there. Hey spend a grand on mods and beat him and take his grand or spend a grand for losing.

I think thats a possibility. He's only owned a manual for a year and the rsx for only a short time. If it's a drivers race I have it for sure. As long as he dont get car lengths ahead of me I guess I will be happy. Than at least I have a little pride left

there's almost no chance he'll miss a shift, given the scenario..

You said the race would be from a roll at 55 mph, which means he'll be hitting 3rd probably right away, and shifting to 4th from 3rd is the easiest gear to hit. It's straight down.

Get him from 45 in 2nd gear and he might miss 3rd, though.

I say its all about the driver, I have owned 2 RSX type S (2003 and 2005 model) its a rev hard engine. Not to much torque but like it rev's. Something about that K20 always made me want to rev it from corner to corner and yes the 4 gear in a TLS its weak, that why I'm always on manual mode.

j-pipe/pnp runners and it will still be quiet and odds are your wife won't notice any changes if she just puts around when she drives it.

Should be enough to give you an advantage. BTW, here is the C&D road test acceleration numbers of the RSX:

C/D TEST RESULTS:
Zero to 60 mph: 6.1 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 16.4 sec
Street start, 5-60 mph: 7.0 sec
Standing ¼-mile: 14.8 sec @ 95 mph

a CL type S can eat a RSX so the TL should have no problems and 3rd gear is good to 125mph so 4th does not even come into the picture...until well into the triple digits

OP use Sport mode and make SURE you are in 2nd gear (good for 79mph)

yeah no competition, even with wheel spin an a slightly late start the CL owned him. TL is lighter and slightly more hp....

The 3G TL is not lighter or faster than the CL-S, especially when comparing 5AT cars. On its best day, a stock 5AT TL is good for upper 14's at around 95 mph, so it could be a close race, but I'd still bet on the RSX. And I don't know if the gearing is different on the CL, but 3rd in the TL's 5AT is only good for ~105, not 125.

With a proper driver, RSX-S will edge a 5AT TL.

Few stealthy bolt-ons will help secure a victory, good luck!

The TL is faster than the CL-S to 60 and the CS-S is definitely faster than a RSX....from a standing start through the 1/4 it isn't even close. If you are wondering about gear ratios and weight, here they are

Gear ratios for 08 TL base 3623lbs

270HP fuel cut 7000 (Acura)
Gear Ratios:
1st: 2.70
2nd: 1.61
3rd: 1.07
4th: 0.69
5th: 0.49
Reverse: 1.89
Final Drive: 4.31

260HP fuel cut 7200
CL-S 3470lbs
1st: 2.563
2nd: 1.551
3rd: 1.021
4th: 0.653
5th: 0.470
Reverse: 1.846
Final: 4.428

Yeah I would say that the TL performance is right inline with the CLS which is above RSX...

Race him, take his money, give it back and just be happy with your TL. I smashed 2 or 3 bolt-on RSX-S's (05-06) in my old relatively stock TL. You got this man. Start out in 55mph in 2nd and by 110mph (just before 4th gear) you should be ahead enough to confirm that you're the clear winner. Let me know how it goes.

I think you forget that neither of those HP stats are correct for the Acuras you post above. That was before the SAE ratings. The TL makes 258HP and the CL-S is around 246HP. Regardless of that, the 05-06 RSX-S is faster than the 02-04 RSX-S with the revisions that acura made to the engine. The CL-S and TL are right in line with acceleration, driver dependent. The RSX-S is the faster car with a good driver, but we are talking a couple tenths of a second. So in reality, all 3 are a great drivers race.

that CL-S you posted was a 6MT, not a 5AT.

P.S. I don't know whos speedo you are looking at, but no CL-S auto is hitting 125MPH in 3rd gear haha. Nor 79MPH in second gear. Check youtube for help. Your speedo must be way off!

Soooo....3623 is less than 3470?

And the 3G base is 258 bhp. Granted, under the 2006^ standards, the J32A2 would be around upper 240's.

There really isn't much meaningful data on the 5AT cars, but I thought the general consensus was always that the 5AT versions of the CL-S and 2G Type S were a little quicker off the line than the 3G base 5AT due to the absence of drive-by-wire.

I was just gonna say....she won't let you mod the car....but she's ok with you betting 1k on a race? lol

And yeah, an 05-06 RSX-S is a bit quicker than the 02-04's also since they come with the better cams, exhaust and 4.7 FD.

Stock vs. stock, you're going to lose from any roll, and if he's a good driver you should probably lose off a dig too.

He's gonna have to START in 3rd gear at 55mph due to the 4.7 final drive on the 05-06 RSX-S. 55 is actually a pretty bad spot for the RSX, especially stock with the rev limiter set to 8200rpm or whatever it was. So in reality he only needs to shift once. This might actually be an advantage for the TL since from 55mph, the TL will likely be able to downshift into 2nd gear and get a jump on the RSX since it won't be the best spot for him to start. You want a better advantage, start at 50mph....he'll have to start in 3rd and will be even lower in his revs.

Almost exactly what I was going to say before reading your post when skimming this thread. At 55mph, the RSX will have to start in 3rd. 50-55mph in the 5AT TL is probably it's best spot.

If you go from 50-55, the TL will probably be ahead until mid 4th gear where the RSX should come back. Go from a 50 roll and just shut it down early lol.

im pretty sure those are the gear ratios for 04-06 base TL(because it says 270hp, and only the 04-06 had the older testing which made it 270hp). the 07-08 base TL has the same updated tranny as the type S auto, which comes from the 2nd gen RL.

1st will redline at 41mph, 2nd gear 71mph, 3rd gear 109mph
