07 Type-s Dealership fished me?

Hello, Acuran!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am new here and owned 07 TL type-s since April, 2007.
Anyway good to meet you people here.

I live in Seattle, WA; bought TL s at the Bellevue Acura.
I never owned Honda or Acura before I hated hondas bc sound like cans....
but, TL ....... its really nice.

hey guys, I have a question on Oil changes.
I had an engine oil service at Lynnwood Acura about two months ago.
It was kinda too far to go to bellevue one.
anyway, I thought never have to worry about oil change things since I own a Acura; because Acuras are high end class vehicles.
But My gf and I was talking about engine oil change things, she never check her car engine oil, so I wanted to show her where she can check oil life.

i pull out the oil stick from my TL-s engine.
it was black , really black...
I checked display computer its shows 90% oil life. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I put about 1000 miles for two months.
Is this possible? don't they supposed to use synthetic oil? is it burn that fast?
I paid for oil change about $96.
I am guessing that Dealership put the regular oils in.....

Lynnwood Acura WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anybody live in Seattle, WA?

Buddy, your post is a little hard to follow. Just follow the MID (trip computer) regarding oil changes. By the time the computer flashes that it's time for another oil change it will be 5-6K miles from now. Plus the computer algorithm takes into account the type of driving one does (city vs HW).

sounds like you got jipped...i do it myself or take it to my trusty mechanic whom i built a relationship with for over 3yrs. he's quite expensive since he does quality work and i know i can trust him with any of my cars. acura doesn't own and operate every single dealer, they are independently owned and operated.

call acura (corporate) and tell them the situation, ask for a refund or service coupon for a free maintenance through another dealer...never hurts to try...file a BBB report if you're really pissed about it.

but oil should be crystal clear (figuratively speaking) at 90%. my first oil change was at 2500miles (50%-60%) and it was really black for some reason but not at 90.

good luck...

If you have some logical hands, an oil change is the easiest maintenance next to changing out the wiper blades.

Basically, park leveld on a driveway / inside a garage. get carboard if you don't want your clothes / back dirty. Then follow the thread listed a little bit down about oil change instruction. I don't want to repeat everything.

either they "forgot" to change your oil or your MID is malfunctioning.

oil that is working right picks up combustion byproducts and suspends them in the oil as they head for the filter to be captured.
Oil color is not a way to tell whats happening. It can get black in a few days sometimes!
The mid gets reset manually at oil change time- should count down to 10% at about 6000-7000 miles so you change the oil by the suggested 7500, and like a gas guage- goes faster at the end
New cars should use the factory oil for 6000 miles or so, THEN change, not 2500 miles.

The dealer ~oil service~ for 90 bucks was probably the inspection bs service.
They do not use synthetic unless you PAY extra for it- often 70 dollars JUST for the oil change.

yea, just jack up your car safely (use jack stands), put a pan under the drain, unscrew it carefully, let it drain for 5-10mins, remove oil filter on the passenger side wheel (turn wheel outwards), let that drain for a bit.

pour oil into your new filter, put it back on, make sure to tighten, screw back the oil drain plug (make sure you have the metal washer on), pour 5 qts of oil and you are set. check it in a day or two to see if you're short, but you should not be if you put full 5qts, manual recommends 4.5qts but its not enough, 5 will do it.

first oil change should be done between 1000-2000 miles to clear out metal shavings. my oil was completely black at 2500 miles with a TON of metal particles. after that, its the normal 5000-7000 miles depending on driving habits & conditions...

not sure what oil you're using but it can't be black in a few days or you have a serious problem lol.

yaku said he paid $96 for reg oil, so he already got ripped off there. i can get syn w/ labor for 65.

You should consult the owners manual on engine break in procedure~
It runs an oil that allows extra metal wear so there is proper wear in of moving parts to each other.
Early change can stop that process early- leading to lesser performance, but its your car- do whatever you want= rev that thing to redline in every gear~

From the online 2007 TL manual page 234 on Break in :
...future reliability and performance by paying extra attention to how you drive
during the first 600 miles (1,000 km).
During this period:
You should also follow these recommendations with an overhauled or exchanged engine, or
when the brakes are replaced.
Do not change the oil until the multi-information display indicates it is needed.
Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles (300 km).
Avoid full-throttle starts and rapid acceleration.
Your vehicle is designed to operate on premium unleaded gasoline with a
pump octane of 91 or higher....

The oil color does not mean squat, they all go black very fast, if it smells burnt you have a problem.

Actually, if u live in a city with heavy traffic all the time, you'll need an oil change sooner. Especially with hot climates. Personally, I don't go by the display cause it's not acurate and it will give u too much slack. Since I care about my TL, I do mine every 3,000 miles as it is recommended by proffesionals. If you're oil is still dark, do an oil change and then check the oil in a couple of days to make sure it's staying light colored. Get someone who knows to help you do you're oil change. After the first one, you'll be able to do the rest urself, with the right tools of course. Read your Maintenance Minder part of ur owner's manual to see how to reset you display.

a well, maybe I have to talk to Dealership this Saturday.......
I want to listen what they are going to say...

I talk to Lynnwood, WA Acura Service Dept on the phone, my price for Synthetic oil.
However, I have a sticker that they put it on my windshield it shows such as Chevron oil.

no you can reset it yourself, look in your manual, it tells you exactly now.

i think you go to the oil life screen, hold down reset/sel button for 10 seconds. i dont remember the exact procedure, but look its there.

Just do what it says in the instruction in this thread. I did my 1st ever DIY oil change yesterday. It was simple. Just take your time and follow the instructions.

3,000 miles might have been true in the '50's with crappy oil, crappy filters & engines with lose tolerances but today its a total urban legend.

Go by the minder, since the company who designed it has to pay for the warranty claims.

Additionally, their dealers would like to get you in as often as possible to releave you of some money so there is no way they would not recommend 3,000 miles if it was a realistic choice, they thought they could get away with it, or both.

I got a buddy in a corvette club that does his oil changes every 1,500 miles, not cause he has to, but cause he wants to. I'm the same. I hate to see my oil get dark. Maybe I'm exagerrating or maybe some people take care of their cars more than others. I invested in this 35k dollar car for a reason. It's not exactly petty cash. Just my

Your Corvette club buddy is overdoing it just like you. But as you said if it really makes you feel better have at it.

406Ci Mighty Mouse

350/370LT-1+ extras

Non Corvette Club Car

That being said I would not be advising guys they need to do it more then the owners manual & MID say is required.

Just two things, multi grade oil will turn dark very quickly in normal use & I don't see weekly oil changes to maintain its in the can "color" a very practical or useful thing to do. Second there are no $35,000 cars that are investments, TL's are at best a not so rapidly depreciating assets when compared to some other cars.

While $35,000 is not petty cash its just not as much as many people on this forum thinks it is either when it comes to buying a new car.

The average price of a new car in 2006 was about $28,000. Many full sized pickup trucks are well over $35,000 & my '08 Expeditions MSRP was $51,275.

As far as SUV's go Toyota, Nissan, Acura have SUV's a bit more expensive then my Ford & MB, Lexus & BMW SUV's are way more expensive.
