07 S type prepurchase issues
Hi all,
I'm new to the forum so if I'm making a mistake or posting in the wrong place, please let me know. So I'm looking at a couple 07 TL's. I have a few issues I'll break down by vehicle.
The first is a base model with about 105k on it. The water pump and timing belt have been replaced. The problems I have are: 1. I think the motor mounts will need replaced soon. And 2. The interior is beat up. No rips but it has like gouges and stuff in the door panels and seats. The car inside was filthy too! Asking 6800. I think I could get to about 5500.
The second is an S type with about 120k on it. The water pump, timing belt, motor mounts, Drive belt, tensioner, and spark plugs have all been replaced. The issues: 1. the key fobs will need replaced. 2. the sun roof wont operate at all. 3. the hood struts need replaced. 4. passenger seat has a rip. 5. back tires need replaced. 6. the HUD has been disabled due to battery drain. 7. a few dings and scratches on the body. asking 9000.
So my question is should I go with the base model with fewer miles and a few less issues or get the s type and put I'm guessing 1500 to 2000 into fixing those issues?

What year is #1?
Everything else is pretty easy to deal with but why wont the sun roof work on #2?
I would not deal with either one but if I had to, I'd pick the S. The biggest item that puts me off is a dirty interior. If they're negligent about something as simple as keeping their car clean, I don't trust they had the car's best interest in mind when it came down to basic maintenance.

Both are overpriced for their condition, keep looking.

I would research the local market prior to dealing price, dealer not dumb either. If the vehicle is a popular demand within your area chance they won't budge on the price, as far as the general pricing goes I have to agree with Justin on this one it worth $6k with all the issue you mentioned above.

You know...a dirty interior is not always a sign the car was not taken care of. I wouldn't say my interior is filthy, but it is far from immaculate. But all maintenance is taken care of properly on my car. Having kids means my free time to clean my car has gone to zilch. I probably actually clean and hit the seats with 303 more often now than before since I worry so much about damage to the leather from the car seats. But overall, there is always crap in the car, crackers/cereal on the floor, and feet marks on the back of my seats.
Now.....if I were selling my car, it would be cleaned back up properly as much as I can with two toddlers wrecking any cleaning efforts 2.3 minutes later.
I have no feedback on pricing...I just don't track it enough to know value. But...take into account what is basic maintenance/repair vs major cost/effort on each vehicle.
Base Model
- Motor mounts...not surprising...this is a normal wear item that pretty much any vehicle of this age will need done
- Door panels and seats may be expensive to repair/replace
- Determine how filthy it really is....just a basic cleaning will resolve? Or full on disgusting dirty which will require major effort to resolve?
- 105k maint was done which is a perk...any other maint records?
Type S
- key fobs aren't cheap, but still easy to replace
- sunroof motor burned out? that is not a common issue....no idea how difficult or expensive to repair
- hood struts...easy and cheap fix...no surprising on this age of vehicle
- ripped seat...not an easy/cheap fix, but if that is the only issue with the interior, there are options that aren't too horrible in price
- back tires? they are evenly bald? worn on the edges only?
- HFL disabled...common...a majority of us on here have ours unplugged as well
I think this really comes down to what you want, what your budget is, and what your plans are for the vehicle. Take a closer look at any maintenance records available just to see if there is a pattern to see if it was maintained at all. I pay attention to tires than the rest of the car to tell me how much someone cares about their car. Cheap tires, unevenly worn...to me that signals more about how well someone took care of their car. Not the only sign, but if I find a car that looks shiny, but has crap tires on it, I will walk away. If you are willing to cheap out on tires, you probably cheaped out on maintenance as well.

Just to set some expectations here, when I was shopping for my TL in 2017 I took my time, I looked at many dozens of cars over a five month period before I found "the one". You're looking for a 10+ year old car and for every creampuff, you'll see many which are pretty crappy, so take your time. If you don't have the time and need a car immediately, then maybe you should cast your net further afield than the 3G TL.

Is a type s really that important to you?
Either way it’s not worth 9 in its condition
if I had to buy one or the other I’d buy the base. Or you can wait and find something different.
Idk what you’re looking to do with the car so it’s hard to give you advise

You CAN find better but honestly after checking around for about 8 months or so since I bought mine... 7.5k for a fairly low mileage Type-S isn't a bad deal at all. Hard to tell without pictures but if the one tear in the seat, the sunroof and it needing 2 tires are the only issues that's not that bad.

If you're looking for an automatic model which is not a Type-S, it is a buyer's market; keep shopping and look for the best balance of condition and price.

My brother-in-law bought a MRP 6MT Type S with around 90K miles for $10,500 in immaculate condition. So yea...6MT Type S prices are up there. I, on the other hand, bought a 04 Base 6MT with 192K miles for $2,450 but needed some work..

That is an amazing deal on the Type-S, I paid $10,000 for a 2006 6MT in immaculate condition with 114,000 miles on the clock two years ago.

Edit; got it, Bring a Trailer.
Edit #2; Yikes, that sucker is nice. Odds are pretty good it'll go for well north of $10,000.

sorry but if you looking for a cheap car it won't be on BAT. That website is full of automotive enthusiast, where they would pay extra $$ for the condition.
You won't find a clean 6MT TL on here for less than $10k.

Agreed, and even with the front bumper replacement on that car I'm betting it goes for way north of $10,000, hell, $12,000 may not even be enough to buy that car; it could bring as much as $15,000.

If I am not mistaken, the last time that car listed on Cars.com for $14,995.

Not sure anyone equated cheap with BaT but they have some awesome eye candy.
