05 TL vs. 03 AV6 (auto vs. auto )
05 TL vs. 03 AV6 (auto vs. auto )
So me and my friend went at it on friday night down this pretty long stretch of road...He has a completely stock 2003 accord V6 and I have my 05' TL (5AT) w/ AEM intake, sway bar, and 19" Rays 2-pc lexions on fresh rubber...
anyways, we went from about 30mph and i could BARELY pull on him! He was gate shifting, and I was in sport shift mode w/ VSA off...I barely pulled...kinda confused me as i can take out 330's and G35 sedans from a dig...Anyone have similar experiences?

I used to drive a 2003 Honda Accord V6 and those things are very fast. It's lighter than the TL with a 3.0 litre engine. I don't know what it is with that car but the v-tech kicks in really fast. Maybe it was the car itself but I am sure that the end result would be different if you drove the car normally, without sport shift. I feel the sport shift makes that car slower in picking up speed, like it takes time for the speed to increase as you shift up. Meaning the rpm will increase and then it will drop alot to 3000rpm or so when shifting up and then jump again. With the plain old auto the rpm stays at high rpm and is consistent, the needle will not drop too low. Try it and see the difference. Personally i hate the sport shift. It's either auto or old school manual.
With the stock TL it has no chance against a stock G35 or the 330. Even if you have an AEM intake it will not make too much of a difference if you are racing one of these cars. The TL's frame is heavy. G35 has a 3.5 Litre engine vs a 3.2 TL engine. I don't think you have a chance unless you get nitro, turbo etc...the whole 9 yards.

The weight to weight ratios of the accord and TL are not that far off from each other, and they both share the basic engine architecture too, both are J-series. I also heard that when using premium gas on the accord, it will actually makes more power, so that might help it a bit too? And like others have said, SS might make you slower.
so say your on the highway going 60 mph. Would you put it in SS and downshift to 3 and when you reach vtec you shift it to d5? Or would you just leave it in SS and shift from there? I've always thought that SS would be faster...
I had a little street run against an 04-06 TL 5AT a couple of weeks ago while driving my 07 AV6 4dr (5AT). I beat him off the launch but once he got going I could not stretch the distance nor could he make up the difference.
As iforyou indicated, the power:weight between both are VERY close. As far as the use of premium gas goes, it does seem that the 03-05 AV6 does benefit from this...the manual in my 07 indicates that there is no peformance benefit to using premium gasoline (unlike my Murano).

Yeah, but I figured i'd pull on him more than I did...esp since he is bone stock...Maybe its my 19's? I'm running low-profile tires though, so they sit at the same height as stock ( i think ), but they are much wider ( 19x9.0 w/ 245/35 tire vs 17x8.0 w/ 235/45 tire )

The 07 accord is actually a bit faster than the 03-05 models since it's rated 244hp under the new standard. I don't know but if the TL "lost" 12hp due to the change of measurement procedure, then it's safe to assume that the 03-05 if rated under the new system, would be making about 230hp. In other words, 06+ models gained about 14hp over older models.
As for your wheels and tires, is it possible that your rims are heavier than stock? That could slow you down too. And wider tires mean more friction and that will for sure slow you down.

With the right driver, the 6-speed AV6 will win. I believe C&D manged 0-60mph in 5.9s with the accord, while the best I have seen with a 02-03 TL-S is 6.2s.

Yea, that's what I meant by saying "lost" 12hp (270-258=12). If the old accord engine was rated using the new system, it would be somewhere around 230hp (instead of 240hp measured in the old system).

I keep them at stock, unless I find a better design with *lighter wheels* something super light and has the same width as the stock one, and keep the tire width the same as stock. Now then you will get better numbers from it.
