05 TL vrs 350z

My good friend has a 350z and we have been talking about racing alot at the gym. Now the other night we were going up to North Jersey and we came up to a light at a 3 lane highway. I pulled up next to him and told him now here is his shot to beat me. So the light turned green I slowly put the petal to the floor(from my g-timer the results are the best when I slowly put the pedal to the floor, I tried every other way and the best launches are from this way. 60' down to 2.18.) I got him on the start and pulled a little the whole way to 70mph. WIN for me. I do have a few mods though. My best 1/4 mile was 14.3 for an auto. I have every performance mod out except supercharger and headers are on order. but everything else I have. No nitrous

Nice kill. I never got a chance to race a Z but I guess this answers whether it is a waste of gas or not.

I think your friend needs to learn how to shift faster. They are mid-high 13 second cars if driven right. Did he have VDC off...those things really shut down the power.

They're NOT mid 13 second cars.

Most manual 350z's are 13.8-14.3 cars, so it makes sense if the TL had a slight jump.

I'm going by timeslips shown on 350z.com. Go there and the fastest stock 350zs got 13.6x. That is what I call mid 13s but your definition may differ. If you go by the fastest published TL times, you get mid 14s which is still a huge difference in speed. On 350z.com, there are auto 350zs running 14 flat...if driven well, its just a faster car period. As I said, nice kill...anything can happen on the streets and most people cannot drive manual that well.

I should have rephrased.

The 350z in the mid 13's is like the ls6 z06 running 11.7's stock. Rare but done.

My car ran a 14.307 at the track. I have not seen a Z even hit 13's at the track. The last night I was there I saw 3 run 14.3 - 14.7. I know they have the capability to run that though. It depends on the driver

I bet from a roll, you'd give a well driven z a run or even beat it (as you have). A Z will always have the advantage from a stop though...bet its a bitch to launch your car.

you are 100% right about me launching it. My best 60' was 2.18 I have to almost feather the gas down because I cant get traction. My fronts just spin, I need more torque down low for when I can get traction it will just go. The TL is pretty low in torque. In the spring I will be putting on better tires so it will help me with the traction. The headers I am getting give 21 whp and 16psi or trq. It will most likely be better than. Hope for the best

350z are no joke on highway. i thought i had a chance to stay with him since i got 6 speed with aem, Ur Crank and comptech exhaust. i ran a 350z that was stock, at least it look stock that i came across on the highway i-70. we frogged each other for a few minutes until we hit a straight stretch with no cars. dropped it in 3rd at 65 and dumped the gas. i was up with him til end of 3rd and he started walking away slowly. we ran up to the point where i maxed out the car at 155 (not joking) and fuel cut off kicked in and he was a good 3 cars ahead and still goin. i swear he must have been goin at least 160-165 or even faster until i highbeamed him to slow down cause the valentine went nuts and we saw a trooper on the opposite lane. first time i ever went past 120 and it scared the shit out of me not to mention that i still didnt trust the z-rated BFG's at those speeds, but the race made me keep going. he seriously mopped the floor with me. buddy with 6 speed accord coupe with intake and exhause said he beat one on highway and i believed it but its all bs now after i ran one cuase i can pull on him. it might be different if i took him from a light but not sure.

I got the jump and pulled from an 06Z to around 100 this past weekend. I didnt get a chnace to meet the guy and see if he was manual or auto, but I was looking into the Z when i was deciding whether to get a new car or mod my TL. The 06's weigh a solid 150+ more pounds than the 05s and before and track and 35th Anny Z's have always been heavier than the other ones.

nonthless, good race. Kudos for both 350z and TL.

In theory I would see TL getting behind but you got some mods so it's all good.

Every 350Z I have seen at the track have run low 14's, but none of the guys were really beating on their cars or shifting hard.

Nice kill BTW, what is your mph at the track?

60'2.20
1/4 14.37
trap 99.3 mph
If I had some better tires that would help me launch I would of got a better 60' wich would of helped my time better. But michelin all weather are good for the bad weather. In the spring I will be getting better ones. Any suggestions?

That's what I do enjoy about the VQ35DE, you dont have to work too hard to get respectable 1/4 mile times.

My experience is with drag radials and slicks. But I've heard that the Kumho's and Sumitomo's are fairly sticky for a street tire but I would check around.

My best 6ft with the Formula is 1.35.

My Sumitomos is very good, i run them as my snow tires up here in Toronto and held up fine, tons of traction and excellent dry/wet/snow grips, i run on 17s as well

and I run Toyo T1-R for my summer set, but i like sumitomos more since they are more quiet and pretty much as sticky as the Toyos in normal temp

I can tell you that if I got in his car and we raced it prob would of turned out differenty. He didnt pop the clutch when he launched, I dont think he was shifting hard enough either. But then again every z I saw running at the track was low to mid 14's. That suprised me, and there were a few there. Two even raced each other and my time was better than both.

A 350Z driver has to be 100% driving to beat us, and vice versa. It's a driver's race in most cases.
