05 TL with high miles (85K), is it worth to buy for $17K???

To all experts,

Please help me to make this decision. I am interested in this 05 TL Acura but with very high miles (85K - highway miles). It is in excellent condition and the guy asks for $17,200. Is it worth to buy or should I buy a brand new 07 honda accord EX for only $20K..... Of course I prefer acura. Please help in advance. Thanks. By the way, this is a very urgent question since I need to give him an offer asap.

Its always better to go with brand new if you have the option. Depending on payments the Acura will have over 150k miles on it when its paid off as opposed to the Accord which would still have less than 100k making it easier to get rid of. Plus you're approaching some service with the TL.

I love TL's, dont get me wrong but I'd personally go with the Accord.

+1

Do you have any pics of it? What shape is the TL in? How's the interior? Has the previous owner done any service to it/ are there any records available? Highway mileage is not that bad in general- less wear and tear but we need more info.

I understand the difficulty in the decision, personally I would purchase the Accord. A few reasons being that 1) Brand new EX- nothing wrong with the EX, top of the line model ( V6 or 4, by the $ I would presume 4cyl.) 2) The milage- brand new, or 3 year old car with 85K !!highway or not or going to be at 120,000 before you know it.
3) Chances are when you decide to trade the Accord in or sell it, say for a 2010 or 2011 TL, you will get more for the 07 Accord with 35K miles than a 05 TL with 120,000 miles on it.( No matter how many miles you drive a year, u will still get more for the Accord.) Good Luck

Thank for helping me. it is in a good/excellent condition. The owner does take good care of it. Of course, brand new is always better but I do love TL. The Honda Accord that I look into is only a 4 cylinders one and pretty basis car, not luxury like Acura. Hummm, it is such a hard decision.

I agree with everyone else. While I love the TL, 85k is too many miles if you plan to own it for a few years at least. On the other hand, if you only drive 4,000 miles a year like my father does...this would be a good find, ya know? There are so many options to weigh.

Do you really need a new car right now? You should be able to find an '04 TL with less miles in the low $20k range if you can wait / save more money or take out a loan (or a higher loan if you're already planning to do that).

I'll be the devil's advocate...

You seem to want the TL, so get the TL. On the logic side, it's not new, but it is pretty well depreciated. The Accord will take a big hit the first year, but I'll be the TL will be work $16.5 - 17K next year if you want to get out of it. Also, if you're hot to have all that power, the Accord isn't going to satisfy you. You'll have the Accord but still want the TL cause you need the juice. If it's had any kind of decent care, the TL will go to 250K. Also, offer the guy less. High mileage used cars are poison on the used car market, but if you like cars and know how to take care of them, they're a bargain. Offer the guy $16 then throw in another $500 to get the deal done. The TL is fun, plus you can play with it and mod it without fear of voiding the warranty. Someday you'll have to be practical. Today you can have a little fun! Good luck with whatever you decide.

The original owner probably used the car for work or something. But thats a lot of miles.

Anyways, if the car is maintained well then it will last at least to 200k like someone else said above. However, in my honest opinion, I would go new. Less head aches & $ if the TL so happens to break down. At least the Accord have 3 yr warranty and Honda will take care of it.

Good luck with your purchse.

Haha, TL all the way. I just paid more than that for an '04 with Navi and 85k on it. I did not even consider an Accord even though I knew I could have a new body style EX for the same money.

What ever happened to the old Honda mindset of "100k is nothing on a Honda..etc, etc." ??
