'05 TL 118k needs new tranny :-(
Bought the car used not even a month ago for 7k. Fell in love and started modding my heart out and spending hours upon hours on this forum. Over the weekend the car started driving funny so I took it to a personal car mechanic ran some codes nothing major so I still decided to bring it to acrua for a check up and boom just got a voice mail saying I need a new transmission and the the stealership is quoting me 7500 for a new one which I know is 4 times the price. Heartbroken and lost any suggestions? darren dalrymple who I found on YouTube and from the forum with his mods been a great help during this painful situation. Big shout to the homie

always maintenance over mods. always.
2nd, dealers will always quote new marked up prices.
and how do you know the stealership is telling the truf?
they could be lying to you; to get that $7400 from you.
find a used accord tranny for 800-1200 bucks.
pop that sucker in and you'll be good to go.

used is the way to go.
new will be more than $4k every time.
quick story.
I bought my first car for $1500.
not even 6 months later, tranny died.
costed more to replace tranny. so, i let the car go.
from then on, I always bought manual cars.

Piece of advice, I highly recommend not going to a transmission shop unless they specialize in Honda/Acura or the dealership. The price quoted of 7,500 is pretty ridiculous I'm not sure if you went to a Honda or Acura dealer but when I was quoted from a Honda dealer it was around 5K. The Honda/Acura specialist shop I spoke too quoted me around 4K with (I think) 3yr. 100,000 mile warranty.
The cheapest route is what justnspace said I believe its an 06/07 accord tranny that will fit right in, someone made a thread about it on here...
I made the mistake of going to a shitty tranny shop for a rebuild because it was someone my local mechanic knew and I'm still having the same problems...good luck!

Actually was the acura dealership, it located here in new York it's called Paragon Acura. He's quote is a joke.... Looking at my opinions at the moment, the guy who I bought it from must have a guilty conscience because he's offering to pay for labor but I'm trying to get atleast half the price of what I'm gonna pay for the repair or new one

Are you willing/able to pull the transmission out yourself and replace it? If so, you can do it fairly cheap. Doing it for 1500 or less shouldn't be a problem.

Don't walk....run away from Paragon. Too many horror stories from AcuraZine members regarding that dealership.
The seller with a fucked up tranny and guilty conscience sounds familiar....
Hopefully you can get him/her to pay half.
I would PM Bruce/ AckTL05 and see what he can do for you. I think he's in Jersey and he is an AcuraZine vendor. Phone number: 732-208-2014

It's like we were separated at birth. Same exact situation, except I made the mistake of having the transmission rebuilt - to have it continue to die 7 more times. Luckily they rebuilt it under warranty each time.
I then converted that car to manual and have never purchased another automatic.

Whoever had the car before you didn't taken good care of the AT and just you have bad luck. I had experience with both trany, I had a Legend MT throw out bearing decide to quit working at 125k miles and the cost for me to replace is $1500 back in May 2005. I moving into a 99 Accord V6 later found out the final drive is loosen (AT shifting fine with no slipping or shutter) and the whole AT need to be replaced, Honda dealer wanted $5500 back in 2011. MT TL clutch replacement could cost up to $2500 (depend on your location) and some people complaint the clutch slipping around 75k miles, I guess because the way MT isn't so smooth in our TL. I give you advice is that find a reputable mechanic either he work for dealership or own a shop and ask him for the labor cost for AT replacement. You just buy the Accord gear box and let him does the swap and the cost will be around $1500, plus the 06-07 Accord AT is a improve version of the earlier model. BTW forget the list that dealer gave you, all they want to do is redirect you over the new car/CPO department so they can make some $$$, I look at that list and laugh every time they give me one.

180 for a brake fluid flush??? Seriously?
That's like $15 worth of fluid and 45 minutes of work... Wtf
$525 for spark plug replacement, lol. Ok, now THAT is armed robbery.

I paid $2880 for a full master kit rebuilt and external transmission cooler when I had mine rebuilt. The shop does 190-220 Honda automatics a year so they have a lot of experience with them.

getting quotes here and there and most likely I'm gonna sell the car and get something else like a maxima or g35. I don't feel comfortable paying almost 3k for a tranny and have another repair in the future. Got a call from the general manager of Paragon Acura concerning a bad review I either put on Yelp or on here. Really nice guy wants to help me out but there still quoting me a crazy amount to fix it. About 4500 or so but I'm deciding over the weekend what I'm gonna do but I'm 75% sure I wanna get rid of the car

Wish I could stay with the car I like it alot but hey shit happens in life. Maybe it's not meant to be for me to own a tl lol

Just take it a to a reputable independent shop and have the transmission rebuilt. That should be the last big repair you'll see for quite a while. It's understandable that one would be upset by this seemingly huge issue, but try not to let emotions cloud your judgement.
I'd even take it to Aamco. I know many don't like them, but we had our Volvo's transmission rebuilt there 10 years ago, and it's still working perfectly fine to this day. Back then, they had lifetime warranties available (but we didn't buy one).

OP get the 06-07 accord AT, I never heard anyone complaints about the failure in those years, if you go with maxima and G then prepare your self to dealing with oil consumption and numerous electrical issue.

Might have some hope, found a place charging 1200 for a one year warranty transmission rebuilt. Guy seems pretty knowledge and had a pretty big shop.... Car is still rideable so I'm giving it until the next year then I'll most likely do the rebuilt. I'll keep ya posted :-)

-get the tranny done much sooner rather than later because the price could go up and you don't want your TL leaving you stranded because you waited. $1200 for a tranny rebuild (especially with a warranty) is a very good price. I'd personally jump on it.
-do the spark plugs yourself- easy to do and ~ $8 per plug
-then decide if you want to keep the TL or sell it to get something else.

Damn dude now I'm scared.. I just an 05 TL from my parents with 84,460 miles and I'm in love with the car. I just hope my trans doesn't go any time soon especially since my dad has only taken it to the dealer since he first got it to do everything..

If you plan on driving it for a year because it 'seems' OK, then, at least PLEASE replace the 3rd/4th gear sensors and change out the fluid to Redline.
You never know, that may end up 'fixing' it. It cost $200 total for fluid and pressure switches and takes like 2 hours (just cause you have to drain and fill 3x with the fluid)
My shifts were horrible and it seemed like my transmission was going out at 80k. I did those two things and 80k miles later it feels like new.

its partialy due to the engineering issues but I am sure that 75% issues here is the owner who's didn't taken great care of the car such as 3x3, 3rd and 4th pressure switches replace and yet keep drive them like a race car so eventually the AT will broke down. My mom bought a 2000 Honda Accord V6 which knowing also as Auto Tragic gear box and yet it has 160k miles with ORIGINAL AT with no slippage. You may asking why? because the previous owner keep the car service in dealersip since day one until the car in our possesion and yet I perform 3x5 ATF so far on the car that why.

Car was stalling bad on Christmas so I took the car to get the transmission rebuilt, cost me $1400 with a one year warranty. Drives good and is shifting better then before. Still gotta do the motor mounts (was told 5 out of the 8 were damaged) so far I'm pretty happy... I'll give another update sometime in the future

Paragon strikes again. How in the hell is this place still in business?
1. 35 bucks to replace the wiper inserts?? Shit, you can buy brand new wipers instead.
2. 525 for spark plugs?
What scares me even more is that there are people out there that dont know any better and get suckered in by the stealership.

Since you've already had a transmission failure, check your plugs at your next opportunity. The auto transmission failure and the #5 spark plug blow out are probably the two single most expensive issues that can occur on these vehicles (and occur quite frequently.) If the plugs have never been changed, I'd STRONGLY suggest even just checking them to make sure they are tight. All you need is a ratchet, extension and a 5/8 socket (don't even need a spark plug socket to tighten them.)
Not trying to scare you on it, but that is probably the only other thing that can ruin the car pretty much...
