04 TL vs. Cobalt SS

i was driving home from the mall earlier today and pulled up in line to a red light with a decent amount of traffic...this cobalt ss in the next lane over had his windows down and music bumpin...the light turned green and he started weaving traffic, getting ahead of everybody...i was hoping to pull up next to him at the next red light and my wish came true...i turned off the VSA just in case he tried something....while sitting at the red light, i notice he's got his spiffy Garmin navigation mounted on the dash...he's also leaned way back in his seat like he's driving a '64, but he was pretty big for that car, so he couldn't lean too much either...

anyways, light turns green and i slowly start rolling...then he takes off, so i decide to see what he can do...i passed him with ease, but not as fast as i've usually passed cars...i was a car length ahead of him by the time i hit 4th and shut it down...i had my son with me and was already close to 80mph...we roll up to the next red light, put my window down, and give him a thumbs up...he kinda stares at me for a second, then says 'how much horsepower that thing got?'....i said 270ish (258 + CAI...it was a guess)...so i asked what his had and he said 246hp....hell, he probaby had every spec of the car memorized...

so i turned left heading home and he went on his way...one thing i was surprised of was that my car didn't take off like it usually does when you go WOT...i mean, maybe i didn't push it thru 1st fast enough or something, but it didn't roar like it normally does....could've been because it was an uphill battle too...that was a first...i wouldn't think it was because i turned VSA off...if i had really punched it right when it turned green, i would've been farther than one car length ahead, i know that...bring on the next cobalt ss...

I don't know man! I raced one on the highway from 80 to 120. I could only get ahead by a car and a half. Those things are no joke to be a rebirth of a cavalier! If you could only pull a car length on him, that is about right.

246hp??? that's like a 31hp increase over the stock SS model isn't it? I think the result was just about right, afterall, those cars are lighter than our TLs. Btw, a cobalt ss just cut in front of me yesterday, but too bad I was driving my camry, couldn't get my revenge....

the cobalt ss appeared to have an aftermarket exhaust and the sound it made didn't sound stock...he could of had something under the hood to have a 31hp increase over the stock SS...

Those things weigh 2700 pounds Either way it is still a cavalier, w/ a supercharger

Cobalt:
2700/246= 10.97 lbs per horse.

TL:
3481/270= 12.89 lbs per horse
I dont believe he had any mods, cuz' if he did have 246, he would have been sooo far ahead! power-to-weight, my friend

May be it DID have 246hp, but like you said, it's a cavalier with a supercharger, it probably has a 30% drivetrain loss rather than a typical 15% loss....

You shouldn't have race when you have your son in the car

If you have 5AT, the first gear will shift into 2nd rather quickly and it takes a split second to shift back to 1st if you stop on the accelerator. Sometimes it might also stay on 2nd gear by which would take a bit longer and slower before you feel the TQ.

i'm surprised it took this long for someone to mention racing with my son in the car...when i pulled up next to the Cobalt i told myself not to do anything no matter what he does...but when he punched it, i wanted to see what my car would do against it and just shut down the race sooner than i usually do...so i cut it out around 70ish...he's six, so he loved it and it was an open road, but 99% of the time i won't do anything with him in there...

and yeah, the 5AT shifts to 2nd sooner than i would like...if you floor it, it will drop back down to 1st for you, then shift around 5000rpm to 2nd...but all this kinda takes away from your boost and the only other option is to start in L...

Stock Cobalt SS (supercharged version), since there is an SS that doesn't have the superchager, has only 205 hp. So what did he do to get 41 extra hp??? Probably nothing with how you beat him since theya re pretty quick, he was just blowing smoke.

damn, so that guy in the SS dropped at least $750 to gain 41hp...? ...the Stage 2 kit probably came with a brochure that said '41hp gains!' all over it and now this guy can't wait to let other people know about it...

I have one...they are rated at 205 hp 200 tq stock but all stock dyno's i have seen have been 210-215hp at least. What are yall pushing to the wheels stock? I know its probably not 258/270 like its rated. I have GM stage 2 and GM says it brings the car to 245 hp. It adds bigger injectors, smaller pulley, smaller belt, a retune (raises redline to 7200).

Wish some of yall were closer cuz i'd be glad to run em...

our cars stock are 258hp and 238lbs/ft torque...most dyno's i've seen on here show a max whp of 226.x hp...if we're not pushing our full 258/270hp, what makes you think you're pushing your full 245hp...? ...obviously the SS i beat wasn't and i even let him have the first jump...i'd love to run again...now that i know what a Stage 2 SS offers, i can predict the outcome everytime...

The SS is underated...what gm advertises is closer to wheel horsepower than crank horsepower.
These cars are a big booger to launch it takes a lot of practice and a good driver to get a good one. I aint sayin a tl cant beat a cobalt by any means but if you race me i bet the outcome may be different. Oh and the SS weighs apx 2900 pds not 2700
Here is my dyno...

lol I guess manufacturers probably rate horsepower based on the car's actual performance rather than power calculated from the crank or wheels. It just amazes me that a 226whp, 3500lbs car could stand a chance against a 248whp, 2900lbs car. I don't know, but with 20 more whp, and carrying 600lbs less weight, I would say the driver of the cobalt really sucked, or the drivetrain loss of the car is pretty high, or, a combination of both? In this race, rimz purposely launched slowly to see if the cobalt really wanted to run or not too, so any launch problem shouldn't be accounted for since the cobalt had the jump already.

You must be the TL hater. I see almost every post with your name on it slam down the TL's. What the hell are you doing here? Don't you belong to some G35 forum?
