04 TL tranny failure
04 TL tranny failure
Anyone else having transmission problem's? I have had 4 incidences with the 04tl transmission not wanting to shift to a higher gear when traveling about 40MPH ...like when you accelerate it doe's nothing ,stays at 40MPH... Someone else driving my car had it happane to them first and they said RPM's reved to 4000k ...then finally the car went fine ..there were no light's or warnings like some have said might occur ..Dealer could not replicate this problem ..my car has like 23500 miles ..I know something must be wrong ,but don't know if it could be the engine....
The transmission failure's I had before consisted of MAJOR lock-ups while driving fast ..This lagging and not accelerating is soooo sporatic ..Is it possible that the tranny is going or sound more like engine or what ..Seeing this post at an edmund's site makes me wonder... Oh and I was affected by the recent recall and the repair was already done ..the oil jet kit and the car problem's were once before the recall and 3 times after recall ..I have not had any other occurances like that in about 3 week's ...
I just don't know what could be the problem and it is so sporatic .....other then a major vibration I've had since day one ( That has gotten worse since recall) but if service can't replicate ..What can I do ?

I also received the transmission recall notice for my 04 TL. Took car in & had work done. 1 week later @ 41,000 miles transmission went out completely. Dealer replaced, but replaced transmission I later learned is a "rebuilt" one, which means it is someone else's problem done over. The replacement also shifts very "iffy". I have had it with Acura over this problem. Acura has had this serious transmission problem for 4 straight model years. I am considering trading for a 2005 BMW 325. Am I asking for more problems? Anybody had experience going from Acura to BMW?

Do you mean was I driving up hills when this happened ...if so ..no...everytime it occured it was in stop and go kind of traffic ..also each time the car had been driving fora a long time ,like an hour and a half...so the engine was probably hot ...but I just don't know.

There are a few 04TLers who got tranny replaced, but we haven't heard any problems from them. Most of them got replacement done in very early stage.

I'm quite surprised you would respond in such a manner. BACK in the DAY when my tranny problem's arose ,it was YOU then as well who bashed me incesstantly about my complaint's . Then guess what ...I saw on further post's by YOU AFTER my problem's ( Month's after that YOU yourself had some ranting of your own ,since YOU then had transmission problem's yourself ( Nothing compared to mine) UNLESS you want me to GO THERE!
But YES ..AFTER my tranny problem's You were back on here telling your sad transmission failure story!
But ,the fact is you changed your tune after having tranny problem's of your OWN... You GOT HONDA to BUY BACK YOUR CAR...Now you have an 04TL .And you are luving it .. HOW MANY miles do you have PETER????
But here is your ORIGINAL POST THAT YOU EDITED!

Are you still yapping??? I thought you quit your darn rants and raves over a
year ago! I cannot believe you are still on here bitching about your tranny
issues. Back in the day when I cared enough to reply to your posts, I told you
to fight the company and get yourself a new car. I have no idea what happened
with that, but it seems that you're now in an '04 TL .. don't know if you "won"
some settlement, or just bought a new one.
I fought Acura, got a new TL, and love my new one. I have no tranny issues, and
I don't expect any on this car. Not many people have experienced tranny issues
w/ their TL's (2004+) .. you're quite on your own this time.
Try not to waste anyone's time w/ your crap this time, if you have something
intelligent and mature to contribute, please do. Don't just "yell" about things
that you know you're never going to get acceptable answers to.

*You state you have no tranny issue's and don't espect ANY...-> NEWSFLASH PETER...I didn't expect any EITHER ...Or I'd not have gotten this 04TL ! SO I HOPE YOU DON'T Come back HERE in a few month's and post if you do have any tranny problem's, cause that will have made you TWICE BITTEN AND HOPEFULLY TWICE SHY *
My * CRAP* As you put it consisted of a serious accident .... what a HYPOCRITE you are and I KNOW you won't possibly have the NERVE to post about any further tranny problem's you have . BTW PETER ,did you get your RECALL *OIL JET KIT* installed in your 04TL ????? Or did your 04tl ...not fall under the recall??? Maybe you got a later model and the RECALL didn't effect you .
Doesn't matter ....either way Make sure you don't post here if you have a tranny problem on your 04TL okay..........
And BTW PETER ...I could have come back after seeing all your posts of YOUR tranny failure ...your post's on FIGHTING with HONDA/ACURA to make it RIGHT BY YOU...
But you know I didn't cause I felt bad for you and you know what they say ...what goe's around come's around and I thought you had gotten your payback ,by your own tranny trouble's ...But just LOOK at your attitude to me AGAIN ( AFTER BASHING ME FOR MINE ) all the bashing you inflicted on me about my tranny and accident ......Hope it doesn't come back around once again to bite you....although if it doe's you ,PETER will be one to most certainly DESERVE IT.

It's all love at acura-tl.
Anyways, I'm sure the dealership will be willing to fix it for you. Acura isn't known for great trannies, however if you bring it to their attention, they will surely fix it. I have a friend who is a Tech at an Acura dealership and he told me that if you start to have tranny problems, they will fix it for free. However, that being said, if you let it go and your transmission actually goes out, you will have to pay the full price to replace the entire transmission, and that's a lot of money. Just take it to the dealership and you should be fine. Lightning doesn't strike twice? As for me, I have been experiencing little to no problems. I have rattles in my rear sub, map pocket, and I have noisy brakes. They don't worry me though, the brake noise is supposed to go away once the brakes are used a bit more and the rattles should be easy to fix. Best of luck with your car.

I would recommend a fluid change, as a quick diagnostic tool, and consider a refill with Amsoil ATF (what I use). The refill is only 3 quarts or so, and the tranny only holds about 7.5 quarts. Clean, fresh fluid is imperative for these trannies - a small mfg dirt particle can wreak havoc in modern trannies. Try this - if it does not work, either your tranny of the PCM is defective, or both (powertrain control module).
I might add that I was there in 2000,2001, 2002 (TYpe-S), and posted on the rash of tranny failures of those cars - there were many theories, but I was lucky, as my theory (thermal failure) seems to have been the problem in the 2nd gear assembly.

That girl,
I forgot to mention one thing to you. Does it always happen around 40MPH?
'Cause, in driving uphills at 40 MPH, the gear would be held at 3rd gear by ECU. If you said it's revving to 4k, I guess you're in 2nd gear at 40MPH, this is really weird. You should try to demo this situation in the nearby area closed to your dealer. Once you find the way to easily replicate the pattern, you then tell your dealer to test drive over there.
Or you have to bring your dealer tech to where you used to experience this trouble.

Rets and ryder,
No it doesn't occur when going up hill ...the only thing I have noticed in any hilly area's is that when going DOWN hills the car will go to a lower gear on it's own ,but I have heard other's talk about that and they say that is normal ...The car only did this 4 times so far ..about a month apart for the first incident and it was not me driving . The next incidensces were all in the same day of driving ....I had been driving about an hour and a half ...on a totally flat road around area in Orlando ,I did have the engine running idle a long time at the airport before this happend . The engine sounded like it was racing each time I tried to accelrate past 40MPH ,but did not want to go into the next gear....then after that the car drove normal....
Take note this has not happened SINCE.... thats been about 3 weeks ago or so..... I am thinking the engine must just have been too hot ,because I have not driven that lenght of time since and it has not happened again ... The first time it happned was just before the recall was done and I told the dealer about it ...the test drve it and said it did not do that to them ... And what can I say ,it doesn't do that to me each time I drive it either? So I do beleive that obviously.... So WHO KNOW's ,but I am watching the way the car is driving very closy and driving with extreme caution ....I don't see how it could be transmission trouble ....this is such a subtle thing, yet it is obvious when it happen's ,but again nothing at compared to my last 2 major lock-up's !
I do have a major vibration that has gotten worse over time...I had it since I have owned the car ,but it has gotten so much worse. I never complained about the vibration ..it just seemed so insignifigant compared to the tranny lock-up's I had ...You know I felt like ..one might feel complaining about having freckle on my arm and then seeing someone with NO ARM ...and thought who am I to complain ..atleast I have an arm ..but the vibration has gotten out of control ...
This is very frustrating since it does not happen all the time .....if it is the transmission and it is slowly dying ,it's better then it dying fast like occured in my lock-up's ,yet I am just fearful that there could be damage going on while I keep driving it and don't know if it could escalate to a lock-up ...I'm in a catch 22 !

Ryder,

Ryder,
No my car has an L for in the last slot by the gear shift... I have never used anything in this car but park...reverse...and drive..... I think I used that s- mode in my other car once to see what it would do and don't remeber it doing anyhting ..but this car has an L where I think that S used to be..

Here are things wrong with my car .
1. Vibration
2. Brakes squeaking
3. Window tint scratched.
4. Plastic fell off door in rear of car.
5. washer spray for windshield does not work.
6. Seat memory
7. computer must be messed up because the electronic's for window's do whatever they want to do ..for instance sometimes all 4 window's go down about an inch ..BY THEMSELVES!
8. The problem I have mentioned about the car not wanting to go into the next highest gear to make the car MOVE.
Te only things I compained about are the Gear problem and the window washer spray fluid not working. They ordered new washer nozzle's ,which are in ,but have to schedule appt to get them installed ...( Meanwhile the washing the car and RAIN...keeps my windshield clean) And the shifting problem ,which they could not replicate .
I can take all of it ...Just not a transmission problem.

THAT GIRL -
Mine are 72636. Much later VIN. Made in August 2004. No problems with tranny...YET...I have heard that there were problems with the earlier '04 tanny. Fixes made since... I also think there is a recall on them. YUP..Here it is:
American Honda Expands Voluntary Transmission Recall to Certain Honda and Acura Automobiles
Torrance, Calif. 06/29/2004 -- American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today announced that it will expand its existing voluntary recall of light truck models for a potential transmission defect to include certain Honda and Acura passenger cars. The voluntary action involves approximately 499,000 Honda and Acura passenger vehicles with V6 engines and 5-speed automatic transmissions. Affected models include certain 2003 and early 2004 model Accord V6 sedans and coupes, 2000-2003 and early 2004 Acura TL sedans, and 2001-2003 Acura CL coupes.
The company has found only one confirmed instance of a transmission failure related to this defect in its passenger cars, with no accidents or injuries. "We are acting out of an abundance of caution to ensure that this doesn't become an issue for our customers,'" said Tom Elliott, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
The situation is created by insufficient lubrication of the transmission's secondary shaft second gear that can occur under certain driving conditions. Prolonged operation under these conditions can lead to heat build-up and under certain circumstances may eventually result in chipped or broken gear teeth or breakage of the gear. In the event of a chipped or broken tooth, the owner will likely experience abnormal noise from the transmission and seek repairs. In rare instances, this condition may lead to gear breakage and possible locking of the vehicle's transmission, creating a potential safety hazard.
Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted via mail and will be asked to take their vehicle to an authorized Honda or Acura dealer to be repaired free of charge. Customer mailings will begin in late July. In most cases, the repair involves a simple gear inspection, which is accomplished without removing or disassembling the transmission, and a modification to increase the flow of transmission fluid to the affected gear. If there is any indication of damage to the gear, the dealer will replace the complete transmission assembly. Customers concerned about the condition of their vehicle may visit Honda's Ownerlink website at www.ahm-ownerlink.com. Customers may also contact their local Honda or Acura dealer or call Honda customer service at 1-800-999-1009 or Acura customer service at 1-800-382-2238.
Editor's note: This information is being released in conjunction with an announcement concerning a related recall action for Honda models in Japan.

ThatGirl -- all you do is bitch... I have helped about eight people get buybacks from Acura. That's just a fact. No, I'm not a hero, and I don't think of myself as one (so save your breath), I just think you're a yapper, and not a do-er.
Peace.

Thanks JMAN...
I did have the recall done ,even though I never got a letter . They told me I had to have the letter ...I took my car to dealer anyway ,because of the expierience of the car not wanting to acclerate past 40mph ..They looked up VIN and said okay it was on for a recall .
So the recall is done and the same thing occured like I said 3 times that day driving in Orlando.
I have only seen 4 incidenses maybe 5 of 04tl tranny failure ...one is the one in the first thread here and that person had 40k miles on the car ,but states that the refurbuished tranmssion is failing ...I am trying not trying to to complain to dealer about any LITTLE issue as I have had many and not mentioned any except 2 things that deffinately affect my driving like the gear not wanting to shift so my car will move in traffic and just some washer fluid on my window so that I can clean some of the lovebug's off to see while I'm driving ...

Peter,
It is obvious you want some recognition for your heroic act's of telling people how to get the manufacturer to do a buy back on thrir car for tranny failure? I hate to be the one to break it to you ,but I think those people already KNEW .
Now Peter........... Did you really feel the necessity to comment so rudely to this thread,I mean you just could NOT move along like anyone else that isn't interested? Peter your NEED for recognition is what is pathetic ...or maybe you are just that BORED that you have to try and instigate here on these forum's .
I have a legitimate concern with my car .....which is the reason for my thread here....You obviously have only one REASON for making your precense in this thread .....you are trying to instigate and you want a pat on the back for having 3 tranny failure's and telling other's how you got a buyback and THEY CAN TOO.
So here's to you PETER ....You are SUCH A MAN !
Now move along

I have a legitimate concern with my car .....which is the reason for my thread here....You obviously have only one REASON for making your precense in this thread .....you are trying to instigate and you want a pat on the back for having 3 tranny failure's and telling other's how you got a buyback and THEY CAN TOO.
So here's to you PETER ....You are SUCH A MAN !
Now move along
Mike are you refering to this ? This is from 0ct/12/2004 ,which is why I posted this here and to ask about any other's with same occurence,or idea's of what the problem could be ,since the dealer could not replicate the problem.
I also have heard of 4 other incidence's with 04tl transmision failure and from my past expierience's I have every reason to be concerned and this is a forum where one dicuss'es issue's with Acura's right?
As you will note my only interest ever in these forum's is to look into transmission problem's.thats what brought me here . I am not here to nit-pick at other minor inconvieinece's of this Acura..I have had many issue's and I don't care about them ,them only thing I care about is my safety while driving this car . I am not here to fight with anyone and am not interested ,but as is quite obvious there are those here that have little other purpose in posting in thread's .
Maybe Peter is really upset that I didn't single him out for advice on my tranmssion issue's, since he feels he is the tranmission fairy.
I want to thank each member who kept this thread to the issue's that were at hand. I will try my best to refrain from any further sarcastic remark's to Peter....
*Peter *
I asked you long ago to ignore any post's I may make regarding my transmission ,if you'll honor that it would be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou in advance for your thourgh comprehension.

2. Check with dealers
3. felted or re-tint
4. Check with dealers
5. Check with dealers
6. Check with dealers and replace your seat memory module
7. You press the remote too long...
8. Since this isn't happening in each time you drive your car, try to replicate the pattern and show to your dealer... or ask your dealer to have your car few days to test-drive it...

THAT GIRL-
Sorry you are having so many problems with your tranny. I had the same thing happen to my 01 TL and they eventually declared it a lemon and ACURA, via the dealership I bought it at, help me get a new 02 TL for no additional cost. You might want to find out what the lemon laws are in your state. Let me know if you need help since I went through this 3 years ago...

Yes, I do have 04 tl ..it has almost 24k miles on it ,I gave my vin number .. I simply did not look to see if I had an S- mode..it was apparent in my 03 tl as I said I tried that feature once . In my 04tl I guess the reason I didn't readily know about s-mode is because there is an L there and not an S ..am I correct in the 03tl there is an S- symbol where there is now an L ,whcih I assume is L- LOW gear? I am NOT into this CAR like that .. I use it for transpotation ,thats it.
If it cranks, drives forwards ,backword's and the brakes work...gets me to point A and point B safely ..I am pretty easily satisfied.... When a car fails to get me to point A and point B safely ..thats when I worry .
I apologise for my ignorance in the mechanic's of the car ...please do forgive me.
I will check for further with dealer on an as needed basis and thank-you everyone for the help.

Its Happening To Me And Im 17 So My Father Belives I Know Nothign About It.. Well I Brought It To The Dealer And Made One Of The Service Managers Drive It He Told Me That The Tranny Was Really Bad That He Would Accelerate And The Needle Would Rocket Up But The Car Would Not Move. Then He Foudn The Brakes Were Warped And Trhe Rattles In My Car.. There Replacing My Tires Cuz There Flatspotted. I Love This Just Becasue I Was Happy That The Service Manager Foudn It And It Wasnt Just Me Telling Them So My Father Apologized And Acura Apologized And My Car Should Feel Solid Once Again ....
RavingstyleZ....
I am sorry to hear it is happening to you as well.
1. May I ask how many mile's is on your car ?
2. If you were part of the early 04tl Oil Jet Kit recall ?
3. Have they have set a date for your new transmission install ?
4. Did you notice this all the time ,or just certain time's...For instance if you had been driving like an hour before it would happen ...or AGAIN..Just anytime Even when you first took off...
Thanks so much for your input.

okay ,so you obviously were not effected by the early 04tl recall, since your car is very new the VIN number must be really high.
Thanks in advance for the update ..but would love it if you could look at that one question....Doe's your tranny not shift properly all the time..Sporatically ...after long trips....See my point ? Thanks again..
