'04 SSM (auto) TL w/ 107,xxx miles

1. Mobil 1 Synthetic
2. Right after I got it at 105,000 miles
3. It's looks as if it was already changed but I'm going to do it again just for my peace of mind.
4. Couldn't tell ya about new...but it feels decent. The nav. is starting to mess up (only $180 so not bad), tranny can shift a little harsh here and there but besides that feels great!!

I have an 2004 with 133,000 miles. I get the oil changed with 5w-30 every 5,000 miles. I had the timing belt, spark plugs and valve adjustment at 105k. I noticed an mpg gain of +3 after the valve adjustment so the engine must have needed it. The local honda specialist here recommends the valve adjustment every 50k, even though the manual says to wait until 105k.

Over all it is a very solid car with no rattles. Seems as good as new to me. I am sure I will hit 200k with no issues.

2005

I have a 2005 with 141,000. Redline oil since I got home on day one. Timing belt at 99,000, water pump and the belt tensioner at the same time. Still on original brakes. 32 mile commute one way each day.

Not that I don't believe you, but it would be really cool to see a picture of your odometer reading of 225K.

Any problems with the clutch? Have you done a valve adjustment?

Great news,

116K on mine. Synthetic oil from day one. Had tranny oil changed a couple times by dealer. Had the 105k service done by dealer, replaced front axles recently(not too bad, had private shop do it), and had a oxygen sensor replaced. Outide of that in 6 years everything else has been routine maintenance. The brembo brakes seem to wear out every 20-25000 but the car has been great. I have played with the idea of trading it in for a TL-S but I go back and forth on that. The tranny/clutch/engine run like new. The car rides 80 MPH smooth as glass and has unbelievable balls to this day. I still get a thrill when I have some open road ahead of me--its a great car and I have yet to find a suitable replacement when I do go that route. The TL type S comes the closest, but I still prefer my all black interior over the TL-S.

Wow, just noticed I answered this thread 3+ yrs ago at 51k. Now at 102,000 miles and still going strong. Got a power steering grinding sound last week (coldest weather of the season so far), but it was only the P/S pump inlet hose O-ring, a well-documented cold-weather issue on here. Changed it, topped off the p/s fluid, and all is well. Ran conventional oil until around 85,000 miles. Now running "high-mileage" oil which is mostly synthetic blend stuff. Change oil every 3700-4000 miles and it still doesn't get black. Change MT fluid every 25,000 miles. Easy DIY... Same with coolant. Flush brake fluid every 3 yrs (per owner's manual). Flushed pwr steering fluid last year and Seafoamed. TB, water pump, tensioner, plugs done early. Still runs like new. Sooooooooo, onto completing the next 100k miles.

I just bought an '06 with 167,000 miles on it. Seems like new to me, but I'm doing a good bit of preventative maintenance so that it will take me well into the 300s.

116,350 04 TL M/T....
Changed oil when "oil life" at 40% used royal purple 5-20 n k&n oil filter till about 2 months ago.... switched to Mobile1 full synthetic oil n mobile1 filter. Engine still running great. Did my 105k service at 110k miles n holy crap it made a very noticeable change in performance.
Never changed my tranny fluid... but I changed ALL other fluids at 75k miles n they still looking pretty clean.

I want to see one of you guys beat the record set by Irv Gordon's car.

Do a Google search for his name if you don't know who I mean.

(My 2004 6MT is coming up on 70,000 miles. It would have had a lot more if I were still commuting to downtown DC every day.)

I have 136k

1. What type of oil did you use?
Regular dino oil 5W-20

2. When did you first change your oil (in terms of mileage)?
Whenever the MID said to. Have always followed the MID. It ends up being roughly every 7000-9000 miles for me. (I do a lot of highway driving.)

3. How often did you change your transmission fluid?
First drain-and-fill at 90k. Have done a drain-and-fill roughly every 15k since then.

4. Does your car still run like it is brand new?
Yes!

Evolpe,
I'm curious if you ever replaced the transmission sensors. There's a detailed thread on this issue: https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-2004-2008-93/very-interesting-conversation-my-transmission-builder-tl-721508/
and many users on this forum have found that the transmission sensors begin to go bad over time and this is what causes wear on the transmissions. Acura does not replace these when they put in a new transmission, but rather they move the sensors over from the old trans to the new one and so the new trans ends up wearing much too soon as well. Take a look at that thread if you haven't already.

BTW, in case anyone is interested, my maintenance history is logged in this thread: https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-2004-2008-93/my-100-000-mile-journey-maintenance-graphs-charts-803409/

Here's the list of all problems I've had:
  • 37,258 Bluetooth mic making crackling noise for listener on other end. Fixed under warranty. Cost: $0.00
  • 67,000 Battery died when car was 3 years old. I consider this too soon. Cost: $69.70
  • 121,711 Replaced 3rd & 4th gear transmission sensors to cure transmission shudder. Cost: $129.69
  • 123,000 Battery died again only 2 1/2 years after previous replacement. Again, I consider this too soon. Cost: $53.02 (1/2 year of proration applied from the 3 yr battery warranty.)
  • 132,108 Timing Belt Tensioner was causing a loud noise upon startup in the cold. Replaced tensioner. Cost: $250.87

291K Miles on my 2004 TL...

I just cracked 291K last week driving one way to the office 50 miles Monday to Friday and taking great road trips from NJ to Chicago, Miami, New Hampshire, Pittsburgh and of course the Jersey Shore!!

1. I have exclusively used Amsoil, the expensive 5w30 $12 per quart version.
2. I change the oil every other time my TL tells me to do so. I just press reset and remember the next time to change it... and I always do it myself.
3. Transmission fluid has been done once at the dealer at 139K miles and for the 2nd time I followed the Honda recommended 4x replacement method using Amsoil ATF at 240K. I will consider using the 4x changing method again at 310K this summer.
4. Brand new at this mileage, no. However, after I purchased some new to me 05' model rims and tires nearly 18 months ago, she doesn't rattle even at 110mph.
5. I Did the Timing belt/water pump service first at 139K and then 281K, I may never do one again. Really hard to say.

What happened along the way outside of routine maintenance:
...Changed all three catalytic converters under warranty in the first 2 months of ownership.
...rear view mirror fell off at 20k, under warranty and fixed for life.
...Blue tooth module failed at 49K under warranty no worries.
...First battery failed at 171K, second battery feels like new.
...Drivers windows failed at 95k, passenger window failed at 165K and it's not working well since 251K, but I don't feel like fixing a half working window, just needs some encouragement when it's been lowered all the way down.
...Clear coat on the bumper next to the license plate has been peeling away ever so slowly to now make about a 4 inch long by 3 inch high clear coatless area which isn't a big deal, but it's been occuring slowly from around 90k.
...Worst problem I have experienced is torn leather seats that were first torn at ~180k and are now embaressingly torn dead center on both front seats, I have tried cheap repairing just to have them tear again. Pretty much need to invest in new front seats for about $1300 plus the install.
...the side view mirrors both have that issue where the edges turn orange/rusty stained. My fault for leaving the mirror defrosters on I hear.
...Bad history with tires, but must say mostly pot hole related due to low pro tires I suppose. I have gone through tires routinely fast rarely getting to 30k each in a set with the 04 Rims. Once I invested in the 05 rims in 2010, no more flats oddly.
...Let myself get raped once at the dealer for plugs and wires as routine maintenance near 165k. Never changed them myself and haven't done them since.
...At 210k, the cruise control button failed to stay drepressed. After a DIY attempt at replacing the cruise control module on the steering wheel, I super glued it down and it has worked perfectly since. I use cruise often, so it's always engaged.
...Both rear calipers failed seperately at 278K and 287K.
...All of the struts were replaced at once at 286k due to they were all beyond adjustment and as my tires wore it was causing a noise I just didn't like to hear (not that bad really) just annoying.
...I just purchased inexpensive rear hub assemblies and my buddy and I will attempt to change them out just to try to reduce noise that I assume is bearing related.
...Last week I had to replace one headlight, so decided to knock out both for a nice $400 at Pep Boys installed.
...during the last 120k miles when I am in the drive thru at the Dunkin Donuts there is an annoying jingle sound when I press the accelerator. I have asked everyone to take a look and the heat shield has been rolled, cut, fixed, etc. Never fixes the soft jingle when I am doing 1-3mph.

Bottom line for me: 2004 Acura TL is solid as a rock as far as reliability. It never left me stranded a single time in 291k miles. Recently I went to CABO and left the car parked in long term uncovered parking at PHL. 10 days later in 30 degrees she started right up like she always does. All of the electronics still work perfectly. The sound system is still money with no rattles of any kind. The car can look like new with a simple car wash, but when you drive it you can tell it's been around the block a time or two.

Now I look for a Jaguar XF... the worst in reliability I hear. Let's hope 2012 cleans up the reliability issues.

I just hit 297,613. Just got my clutch changed for the first time. I bought the car brand new in 2005. And just changed the timing belt and water pump at 270k for the first time also. I was playing russian roullette with not changing the timing belt for so long. But so far this car has been solid. I had to change the motor mounta too when i got my clutch done a month ago. Because they where shot. Its 90% all highway miles. Im sure city miles would have been more rough on the car.

My 04 TL has 207K miles and still runs like brand new!!
Only problem that has occurred in the past is power steering made a loud noise which was covered by recall!
I change my oil ever 3k and my car is due for a another timing belt this month...

This makes me feel REALLY GOOD about my car!! Hell yeah!!

Some pretty high mileage on some of the cars here. Gotta love Acura (Honda). I got 115,000 on mine. Bought it at 113,000. Had my third gear redone. Timing belt, sparkplugs waterpump were all done before I bought the car. I also had the compliance bushings replaced. Car runs like a brand new car.
