04 TL keeps up with a GTO?

Coming home from work yesterday morning from Columbus I'm on I-70 just past London. I was cruising around 80 when I past this GTO 5.7. I think nothing of it except I look in my mirror and hes coming up pretty quick. I put the pedal down to try to stop him from getting in front of me before we got down to 2 lanes but I didn't. It was a red GTO with big GTO letters in black over the rear fender and he had dark tinted windows. Since I tried to stay in front of him he was pacing me and jumping his car at me but we just entered a construction zone so I just moved behind and figured It wasn't worth my gas to get waxed.

However I started thinking about as I was following him that I really didn't have anything to lose since I was driving the TL plus I was getting drowsy after working 3rd shift and I needed to wake myself up. After we got out of the construction he starts to go slower as if he wants me to pull along side and there's another car for quite aways up. I get on it around 55mph and pull out in the right lane for my pass. Before I got up to him he punched it also and I was expecting him to stop my pull immediately and pull away but he didn't, I kept a steady pull up to around 110 and he finally started to reel me in but we shut down due to traffic with me still 2-3 cars in front.

How the hell that did that happen? It wasn't like I had a huge run on him. I felt bad for the guy since it wasn't really fair for him. I moved over slow down to 40mph and drop to 2nd gear. His passenger has a grin on his face thinking I'm going to lose real bad. I honestly am thinking the same and wondering why the hell am I lining up with a GTO in a TL. He gets ready and I see his hand on his horn getting ready to honk, I start the honking, and after the 3rd honk I gave my silver car all the power she had, with the Goat's engine roaring over mine he starts to pull. Surprisingly once again I'm holding my own, I hit the rev limiter going before going into third 3rd gear which caused me to lose ground. He continues to pull until we hit 110-115. End result? Him slightly over a car length ahead.

NICE! i'm not sure about the newer ones, but i believe they're now coming out in 6.0 Liters? I remember a while back, whipgame pulled on one going down I-405 - 6sp. those things are HEAVY. good "hold" though. props to you!

The guy was a bad driver or just wanted to play with you, having an extra passenger obviously doesn't help either.

Trust me, you don't want to race the GTO. I did it once in my old '04 TL (A-Spec) and got killed, badly

You need the 6MT version. It's got so much pull at high speeds too.

he was playing with you, 5.7 goats can run mid to high 13's, some even quicker.

I don't think he was playing with you, there are several reasons why you kept up better than you thought:

1.) One extra passenger in his car. On my car, whenever I have another person in it, it's noticeably slower.

2.) He probably had AC on?

3.) He probably had some heavy stereo equipment?

4.) Did he have aftermarket rims?

5.) Bad driver? If he can't shift then that would cost him a lot of time.

I don't know I think my car in pretty strong in higher speeds. I can run neck and neck with a 6-speed past 70mph.

Reason I know he wasn't playing because he started messing with me and got caught off guard the first couple of times. When I finally gave him a fair run he didn't he pull as bad as he thought. Having an extra passenger shouldn't have mattered as much it does have a lot more torque. I know GTOs are fast modded but I believe this one was stock. I've never seen a stock 5.7 goat run 13 or quicker they are usually low 14 sec.

I don't have any performance mods but like I said my pull as just as strong as a 6-spd with on a high speed roll (60mph+). I'll be willing to validate this claim if theres any 6-spd TLs Cincy/Dayton/Columbus area that would like to run.
