04 Common Issue?

I test drove 4 TL's 6-Speeds, all of them seem to slip. This is how I test out a clutch, stick the car in 3rd gear, get to 3500 rpms, hit the gas(WOT), a second later press the clutch and release it right away. All the TL's I test drove did the same thing, they didn't catch right away. Just wondering if this is common? I mean this is a luxury car not a high performance car with a high performance clutch... BTW I've owned about 10 manual trans cars: 97 BMW M3, 00 BMW M5, 02 Z06, 97 Supra BPU TT, 91 VR4 BPU....just to name the high performance ones..

thats how u break it. not test it...... the tl has a spring load sensor that tells the clutch when to drop if ur abusing (which what u did is considered abuse to the computer) it wont let the pressure plate drop n grab the clutch plate.

I thought so. I did eventually buy a TL, I just don't drive it hard like a Supra or Corvette. The clutch works fine when driving like this, but when I tried to lay the hammer down, shifting from first to second and second to third, I notice slipping. I shift pretty fast and when I shift like this it's pretty much like my process to test out a clutch.

So what your saying is you don't drive the TL like let say a Corvette? BTW, what you consider abuse for this car is considered regular driving in other..I'm sure the dude that ran a 13.9 in the quarter dump the clutch around 3000rpm, to achieve best 60' feet time. Dumping the clutch at a dead stop is worse than dumping the clutch on a roll.

I guess if what your saying is true, it's good and bad news. Good news, my clutch is fine. Bad news, can't race too much.

I notice when I get on it in the lower gears it will slip a tad every now and then, soft clutch I think .. yeah, it's not a racer, but gives you smooth shifts.

My '04 will get rubber in the first three gears. First gear is all wheel spin when the VSA is off.

As for racing a street trim TL, traction is going to be a bear. Front wheel drive cars just don't have the traction that you get from a rear wheel drive machine.

Potentially Yes, because of the weight of the car. But consistently No, it's more difficult to be consistent with a man.

If you are at a 1/4 mile event where you need to dial in, cars that do well in these events are the auto due to the small variance in their times. In these events if you go faster than your dialed in times you would, 'break out'. Meaning you lose b/c you went faster than you dialed in time. This is has been my experience.

Also if you do get into really fast times, like under 12 seconds, Auto is usually faster...easier to get your horsepower to the wheels and control it.

So I've had the car for over a week now and the clutch is fine, I forgot about the VSA. Turned it off and I can spin second and third. Dump the clutch at 3500rpm and it catches right away... My fault, I forgot about the VSA, that's why I thought the clutch was slipping...Rookie mistake.
