Is the 04 5-speed touchable at all??
Im so genuinely curious if there's literally anything you can do to the 5-speed TLs tune wise because through a multitude of sources, everyone says that it just isn't possible but I feel like there's something that has to be missing. Im fresh outta HS and I've been doing research on this chassis and the J-series since middle school and I've been dying to know how much the auto TL can handle from specifically the 04 TL. That's what I have currently and putting power into the car, trying to stretch it to its very last inch of horsepower from just what I already have (twas my dads car) is easier than trying to find a decent 6-speed TL or let alone attempting a manual swap. But I dont want to start spending money on this car if it'll do nothing in the end. I saw a thread that said the auto trans was the same from the Type S and the base, but Honda also did a refresh for the later years for the auto trans so that it would hold 1st gear because from 04-06(?) the trans would auto shift from 1-2 by itself so, so I figured out if you use low gear from a stop or 10 or so mph, it'll hold 1st gear and let you rev it out, but would that make any difference?? Also, idk wtf Honda did so that the 07-08 base autos could be tuned but if that were the case, could you take the ECU from a 07-08 TL and put it into an older 04 TL auto, would that be compatible and if it were the case, could the car be tuned from there or would you also have to touch the transmission? Asking the questions that I've never seen anyone ask before because I know more can be done with the H5 auto and I want to see if I can find new answers to my new (I hope) questions. Sorry for yapfest.
It may not be easy to find, but all of your questions have been asked and answered many times over the past 15 years.
- Is there an easy answer to tune an '04? -- Nope
- can you just swap the ECU? -- Don't think so
- is the auto trans in the 04 solid? -- Nope
- Will this be a money pit if trying to tune with high expectations of easy power? -- Yep
- Is the auto trans the same as the Type-S? -- Nope, not in 2004...Type-S didn't exist in 2004...and by the time the Type-S existed, the transmission was changed.
I'm not saying it is impossible, but it is not simple nor cheap for big reliable gains.

I didnt say there was a Type S in 2004
it was 07-08 for 3rd gen, we all know this. I meant the auto trans was the same from the base in 04 and onward but you answered my question so thanks. Money pit is real and definitely not worth it at the end of the day but for fun purposes, I asked my questions. Maybe im getting the wrong answers or maybe my questions just aren't realistic but its good to ask ig; thx "Jackass".
