0 to 60 - SportShift vs Automatic Reg

Is their any difference in the 06's 0 to 60 with the Sportshift vs regular automatic. I believe the manual 0 to 60 is 5.9.

Thats going to be very subjective there. Depends on the driver.

i doubt it. gateshifting can be faster if you are good at it.

ss is definitely faster if you stretch each gear its full length without hitting the redline

True - doesn't the ECU learn the way you drive and shift accordingly? The 2G's allowed the driver to stay in 1st, but the 3G's AT only as L (correct me if i'm wrong) so even gateshifting wouldn't help, imo.

You're only shifting once from 0-60, so it wouldn't even really matter, would it??

Other than shifting at a different RPM, I don't see how skill is involved in driving a sportshift automatic?

That pretty much would be the only reason to use SS mode....

That's what I figured. In past cars that I've owned with auto (tip, step, etc tronic) transmissions I always found it best just to put it in sport mode and let the transmission do it's thing rather than try to shift on your own for straighline acceleration.

Actully my 99tl i can upshift from 1-2-3-4 and then back 4-3-2-1 but my 2000tl only alows me from 2-3-4-5 and back 5-4-3-2 it dosent allow me to downshift to 1 or upshift from 1. i think its only the 99 model which u have full control.

Biggest question for 0-60 times is "how many shifts to get there? Can the TL get to 60 in second with a manual? Auto's usually can, and they shift quicker than most people.

The 2nd gear in 6MT pretty much redlines at 60... so one shift each in MT and AT

Yes the auto shifts quicker than most manual drivers, but the manual doesn't have a torque convertor to loose power on the way to the wheels. That's one of the big reasons why the manual will be quicker because it puts more power to the ground than the auto.

I don't want to turn this into a manual vs auto thread because everyone knows we've had too many of those.

How much power does the torque converter take away?

well, that's why I was asking how many shifts to 60. 6spd gearboxes are often slower to 60mph than their 5spd counterparts just becuase they require an extra shift. Same number of shifts the manual is normally quicker for the reasons you mention. (well stock anyways.)

I dislike 0-60 times anyway. Id rather see drag slips for comparing acceleration. That way we can look at the 60', ET, and Trap.

I see what you're saying... If the auto could make it to 60 on 2 shifts vs. a manual making it in lets say 3 shifts that could be a difference.

I can't tell you exactly... maybe somebody else knows some average numbers they use in the industry. Both drivetrains will have power loss on the way to the wheels, but the torque converter is one of the big differences in a auto vs. manual. Basically the power is transmitted from the engine side to the wheels side across a fluid (that is where the power is lost). At a certain speed the converter will lock-up lessening the power loss.

The 5AT can reach about 68 in second gear, if I recall, before hitting the redline. So the only shift in SS or Auto is the first-to-second and it's automatic in both cases.

I'm guessing there would be no way to flash whatever controls the shift points huh?

Not if you use both gates to shift. Right hand side all the way down to start...and when it winds up....shift to SS mode. I do it all the time...daily. Keep it in first though the use of low and then shift to SS mode when you want second. Kind of a hassle...but you get used to it pretty quick and it comes second nature after that.

True, but then you're not really in SS or Auto the whole time (yeah, I know...it's a technicality...).
