$1k to spend

If you had 1k for mods on your car, what would you get/install?

Please assume that your car is currently stocked. Please note that you must spend the money only in one category (can't put $500 in electronics, $250 in speed/performance and $250 on visual/sound changes. Please list roughly 1k in parts for each category. No need to list brands (would be helpful) but the part is needed please.

Categories:
Speed/Performance
Electronics/stereo
Visual/sound changes
Others (if there is any)

Thanks.

Exhaust. Might be tough to pull off full exhaust with $1k, so you could just do jpipe+testpipe. If you shop the Black Market wisely you may be able to do jpipe+testpipe+catback for $1k.

As mentioned before, coilovers would be your best bet but if you're going for visual mods get the aspec kit.

if its strictly for mods i would either say coilovers, or maybe some aspec wheels ... but if your willing to spend it on other things, depending on the condition of your car maybe you may want to take care of some maintenance items

I will be getting mods but i don't want to regret it afterward. For example, i think getting tints would be a nice start visually. but if i were to get multiple tickets in the future for these tints, i might say that it is not worth tinting. Others might disagree even if they get thousands of dollars worth in tickets. I want to get the perspective of drivers that have done these mods and their benefits/negatives of them.

I live in Texas where heat is a factor. my first mod was tint.
I spent a pretty penny on it. $360 to be exact.
I bought the most expensive ceramic tint available to me, because the Texas sun aint a joke. Also 35% is the max legal limit in Texas( although majority of texans go darker without any repercussions) I chose to go 35% all around.

Here's an idea of what my tint looks like.

^get legal tint. or get a warranty with your tint so that if you do get a ticket, your tint shop will fix it for free under warranty.

don't overthink this stuff too much.

You can never regret getting an aspec kit. You may get the coils and not like the ride.

To the OP, You can get used coilovers for 600-700$ from the BM, and then use the rest to get tint.

suspension and tint was the first thing i have done. I went with spring/shock combo because at the time Canadian dollar was so shitty that tein SS coilovers ended up being close to 2000$ CDN.

"Please note that you must spend the money only in one category (can't put $500 in electronics, $250 in speed/performance and $250 on visual/sound changes." Never said it had to be performance.

how much was the dvd sys? How often do you use it?

Technically, I havent installed it yet.
I bought the input switcher from the black market for $160. there are different brands, different kinds and run NEW any where from $200-300. Most popular is the DOM's Nav2go unit. I have the A/V electronics dvd to nav unit.

The DVD player is a myron & davis 3/4 DIN dvd player that fits in the cubby hole below the radio. can be found on ebay anywhere from 100-200.

to get the audio from the dvd player, you would need to buy a unit that inputs audio.
I chose the Pie x3, there are other brands and units that does the same.

you need all three of these in order to successfully play dvds on your nav.

I plan to use it as my main source of audio...download music videos and have them play while i drive.

If I could go back and "respend" my first $1K in mods I would have done it like this. First, tint the windows ($250). Next, upgrade the interior lights to LEDs ($80). Then, the navtool install with the DVD player($350)! Finally, an aftermarket sub/amp in the trunk ($300).

I am going to spend in diff categories but if i just said 1k on anything, i think a majority of the forum will agree on the same few mods. i want to see various mods for various aspects of the car.

Are coilovers used MORE for a comfortable ride or increase performance? I read the basic description of the attached link above and it says that i can lower my car (which i do not want) and for a comfortable ride.

everybody gets coilovers so that they CAN lower their car.

if you don't want to lower it dramatically, but still want to improve your suspension/handling...i'd look into the aspec suspension.

The stock ride on the TL is pretty decent. If you are not interested in performance and you do not want to lower your car then getting coilovers might be pointless.

^+1 What direction exactly do you want your car to go?
- Performance
- Looks
- Comfort
- Or all

I do not see myself racing on a track or in the streets.

For the appearance, i will be content with just tints and possibly LED lights for the interior as mentioned by a responder previously. I would lower the car but i park on the streets and i don't want any part of my car scratching the curb.

I am aiming for a better sound system.

I can't think of anything else to add so that's why i started this thread.

Lastly, if anyone can find me a turbo kit for $1,000 i would be VERY appreciative!

well with coilovers you can lower your ride from 0.5 inches all the way to 3 inches on tein basic coilovers. i just got these on my ride and i love the comfort and quality of the ride and also the ability to lower or raise whenever i want to. With going this route you will also have some money left over for the other stuff you want to do such as, tints, LEDs, etc. Oh and your not going to find a turbo kit for 1000 dollars lol.
