Key fob battery replacement
Key fob battery replacement
Hi guys, sorry if this has been discussed. My fob battery was emitting the low battery warning on the dash. I bought my 2032 batteries from Amazon. I replaced the battery. Green light went on, I’m thinking great problem solved. Hours later I go out to the car, no auto unlock. The key fob is dead! No lights on when i press any of the buttons. Can anyone help? Is there a step that I missed?
Just to be sure this is a 3G RLX? Do you have the ability to check the voltage on the Amazon supplied battery? Do you have one or two fobs? If you have two, what is the behavior of the 2nd fob? Also, if you have two fobs, and one works normally, considered swapping the battery from the know good fob into the problematic fob and then retest.
Thanks! I tried on the 2nd key fob and it works. I think I mightve broken the 1st one. The plastic casing where you do a light twist with the metal key actually cracked in the interior sleeve where the metal slides in. I was unaware of that yesterday but today upon closer inspection I see and feel it. Now that I’ve got it open again the battery won’t stay lodged in the plastic grips, either. I think that might be why. But then when I hold it down in place and see if the key fob even lights up or work, it’s still dead.
Is it a SmartKey or the Keyless Remote fob? I suspect you have the Smart Key since I think the Keyless remote may have two batteries. You might want to look around eBAy (or similar) for a new key, just the plastic portion, and transfer the electronics portion of the old key over to the new housing. To get a replacement fob at a dealer will likely set you back something north of $200.

the key with the engine start button im assuming is the smart key? you’re right I think the electronics component itself is fine. the casing is just cracked - which im surprised it broke so easily i wasnt even heavy handing it. but i just cant figure out why the battery keeps popping out of its little holder.
