Cracked Windshield

I remember something hitting the windshield about two weeks ago while driving on the Interstate at 75 mph. The nearest traffic was two cars about 100 yards ahead and we were on an open stretch of road. While driving that day I looked all around the windshield and did not see anything so I forgot about it. My wife has been driving the car and yesterday the impact point and now cracking is observable. It is down low near to the dash. A local glass shop felt it was likely too close to the dash to allow the heating/working necessary to do a repair.

Nationwide has linked me to go to Safelite. I have a $500 deductible. It will be interesting to see if they elect to repair the windshield. I'd rather have a new windshield. Anyone have advice on this topic?

Not sure I would go with anything but OEM due to glass being laminated. I feel the crack will continue to grow.

Nationwide had Safelite do a patch job today. You can still see one crack a tiny bit and the original hole/depression, while much smaller, is still a slight depression. I am going to run with it this way and see what develops. If it gets larger and more noticeable, a new windshield is the call.

Given the location and minimal nature of the crack, the repair was the appropriate move. A new windshield will never be the same so I always opt for repair.

But... why do you have a $500 comprehensive deductible? A lower comp deductible is cheap (my $100 deductible costs me $26 a year over the $1000) and that covers incidents beyond your control - wildlife, glass, theft, unavoidable road hazards and so forth.

If I have one glass claim every 10 years then I'm still way ahead of the game ($260 plus $100 = $360).

Charlie, you raise good points and your math is logical. Heck, I don't know why the deductible is so high. It is part of a larger insurance package for our home and I'll need to check into the matter. We just had a tree fall on our house and the first $5K is on us as the likely damage will be around $15K. Here in the USA we can deduct losses from our taxes so the financial hit is not as bad as it initially sounds.

Had a rock hit my windshield at the camera location and my insurance co said for me to contact Safe Lite. They had the OEM Advance windshield and after a detailed comparison they changed it out. I was surprised that the LKAS/LDW camera realigned without a problem. I also had a $500.00 deductible and for the OEM price of $2500.00 I changed to "Full Deductible", only $15.00 difference...

First thing if you get windshield replaced find another company. Safelite uses crap aftermarket glass. Find company that will use factory glass . good luck

Speaking of windshields, I have what could be best described as a halo that is about 4 inches in diameter and sits on the pax side pretty low in the field of vision. Certainly not a distraction but there none the less. Looks as if it could be wiped off, not so. Must be internal in the glass. This seems to be a recent development with no evidence of a rock strike or other external damage. Has anyone else ever encountered this kind of damage and if so would it be covered by the factory warranty. Somehow I doubt it but I can't attribute it to anything else??
