Apple Carplay in a 2014 RLX
Currently, there is no version of the RLX that supports Apple Carplay (or Android Auto). To my knowledge - there is no anticipated upgrade to include Apple Carplay to the current generation RLX. My best bet is an anticipated 2018 MMC, which should introduce the new brand grille and I would expect this feature to be in the MMC packaging.
The RLX (and the RL) were low volume cars, so other than a few needed software fixes, there has not been any significant infotainment feature additions made to these cars during their model lifespan outside of MMCs.

Yours is the first success story that I've heard, so anything else you want to tell us about it would be appreciated.
Cost of the item, cost of installation, how well it works, *how* it works, any problems you've had....
:-)
The OEM infotainment system is so problematic, I'd love to be able to find a way around it and use the processor on the iPhone.
The only really solid use I get out of the system is the Krell Audio, for Pandora and iPod listening.
Everything else...I just don't use much anymore.

Ha ha ha.... :-) If it works....
The stand that I have for my iPhone is pretty solid and mounts in one of the cup holders. It can be adjusted to hold an iPad.
I've certainly used a 9.7" iPad as a substitute for the OEM Nav and it works just fine. It'll play Pandora and Amazon Music through the iOS port with pretty good HD quality.
The map is better than the Acura unit.
There are only two reasons I removed it:
(1)The weight of the iPad caused an uncomfortable wobble sometimes, distracting; and,
(2)When adjusted absolutely perfectly, it intrudes into the passenger space a little more than I'd like.
I can't blame anybody for trying a solution like yours. I sympathize completely.
