AM Radio

I listen to a AM news radio station during morning commute. The sound varies going in and out of a deeper sound and back to a hard to describe, but off sounding sound. Every other source sound fine. It seems like it is trying to adjust the sound, but I cannot see any setting that can be turned off that makes sense.

At first I thought it might be interference, but it happens in places where I know signal is good.

Anyone else hearing this?

You know that there is SVC (speed-sensitive volume control), right?

Under Settings > Audio Settings > Sound.

yeah - I agree. almost always starts out with a deeper, kind of hollow sound when I first turn to AM, then quickly switches to the not hollow (hard to describe). Stays in this mode most of the time, but occasionally switches back to the hollow sound for a few seconds.

I can consistently reproduce this. If I switch to AM talk - it comes on with a deep hollow effect for about 2 seconds and then changes. Rarely changes back to the more hollow sound, but it has happened

Now. I'm a bit more concerned because it also happened on an FM station. However, it happened during a commercial where there was talking. It changed back and forth several time during the commercial. Its noticeable, but not hugely different. Wondering if there is some kind of effect the system is trying to apply for talk versus music? Otherwise I have some issue.

You don't have Surround turned on, do you? I noticed there was a Surround option in the loaner that I drove. I can't remember what menu it was under, but I think it was where the Bass/Treble stuff is.

It could also be that the radio antenna is just really lousy. Hopefully not.

I figured it out.
Just happened to look at the lower display when the tonal quality changed. The "HD" indicator on the station number was blinking. When it stopped blinking the tone changed back. Looks like it was having trouble with the high def signal. This also explains the startup behavior. Probably cannot lock into the HD for a couple seconds. I knew FM was broadcasting in HD, did not realize AM was. I had just not noticed the HD under the station number.
